Science fiction is a genre that deals with the impact of imagined innovations in science or technology, often in a futuristic setting.

•Science fiction films are usually set in outer space, or involving other worlds or aliens

•Stories that involve technology or scientific principles that go against everyday physics

•Stories that involve discovery or application of new science

Disaster films usually involve an element of Sci-Fi and as a result is a further stratified sub genre of the action film genre.

Sci-fi disaster films feature science related scenarios that need to be solved in order to save humanity, this is often on a large scale such as global warming or meteor strike.

Example; The Day after Tomorrow In The Day After Tomorrow the catastrophic effects of global warming lead to a new ice-age (predicted through weather patterns and other aspects of science).

As a result of a notified bat weather pattern; there are occurrences of tornadoes, hailstorms and snowing in specific part of the world. From this a series of other events occur worldwide with the main plot being about a male named Jack attempting to save his son.

I thought it would be vitally important to look into the conventions of the disaster sci-fi genre for research purposes. The clear conventions are as followed;

•Disaster in which science is needed to overcome and resolve the disequilibrium.e.g. Armageddon, comet needs to be blown up/destroyed

•Usually situated with parts in outer space.e.g. Deep impact

•Usually involves saving and maintaining the existence of the earth, from the disaster.e.g. Meteor, in which 2 meteor ‘s are on course for earth.
