Tuesday 8 September Nativity of the Virgin Mary The Gospel mentions Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Virgin Mary. In Jerusalem there was already a house called ‘Anne’s house’. A church was built near this house and its dedication took place on 8 th September. The anni- versary of this event was then commemorated every year. The celebration of the Virgin's conception nine months before was add- ed later on, hence the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on 8 th December. Monday 14 September The Exaltation of the Cross This Feast invites us to thank God for the gift of His Son who gave His life for us by accepting death, death on a Cross. The agony of the Cross was one of the cruelest tortures devised by man. Jesus faced death and vanquished it for us. This Feast expresses our gratitude and invites us to meditate on the love of God. Tuesday 29 September Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael With the Archangels, the Church honours all the angels who were under the leadership and guidance of Saint Michael on the day Luci- fer and the fallen angels revolted. The role of the angels is to carry out God’s wishes in accomplishing His divine plan in the universe for the salvation of mankind. They are entrusted with various missions for the benefit of individuals, families, the entire Church and the world at large. From 12 th to 15 th September, French National Meeting for people suffering from various disabilities. It will be presided over by Mgr Michel Aupetit, Bishop of Nanterre and spiritual director for Pastoral care. It will include times for renewal, togetherness and exchange of views. Among the contributors will be Philippe Pozzo di Borgo, tetraplegic as a result of a paragliding accident whose story inspired the film ‘The Untouchables’, and Jean-Christophe Parisot, severely disabled since childhood and, today, a high- ranking civil servant. This event is sponsored by the Pastorale des personnes handicapées du Service national Famille and the French Bishops’ Conference. It is aimed at all those who are touched by this illness, either on a personal level or through a relative or friend. This year the theme of the pilgrimage is in accordance with the Jubilee of Mercy as defined by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. It will be presided over by Mgr Pascal Roland, Bishop of Belley-Ars (Ain, France). The sacraments will be available including the Blessing of the Sick which is always experienced with great emotion and devo- tion both by those who receive it and those who accompany them. SEPTEMBER 2016

www.lourdes-france.org

Lord Jesus Christ,

you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and

have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face

and we will be saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved

by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness

only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and

assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed

to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:

“If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who

manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the

Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.

You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness

in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and

error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved,

and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so

that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and

that your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to

the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore

sight to the blind.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary,

Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy

Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen. Pope FRANCIS

After Lourdes5 GOOD RESOLUTIONS FOR

AFTER THE HOLIDAYS1. EVERY DAY, LOOK AT SOMEBODY WITH KINDNESS

Lourdes is a school of kindness. What probably moves you most in Lourdes is the love you feel between vulnerable people and those who accom-pany them: gestures, looks, words which may have touched you because they were full of kindness.

“What we say and the way we say it should express the kindness, compassion and forgiveness of God for everyone.” (Pope Francis)

I make a resolution

today to treat

someone around me

with kindness and

understanding.

2. EVERY DAY, SMILE AT SOMEONE Lourdes is a great centre for smiles. In Lourdes

you meet people whose faces radiate joy. The Virgin Mary appeared here to little Bernadette and during most appari-tions she smiled radiantly.

“A smile can change a life.” (Pope Francis)

I make a resolution to get up each day thinking

of a person (my partner, my colleague, a

friend, a lonely person) to whom I am going to

offer one of my most beautiful smiles.

3. EVERY DAY, CONSOLE SOMEBODY Lourdes is a path of consolation. In Lourdes you

begin to understand what so many people come here to find: it is the power of hope and the experience of being consoled.

The Lord consoles us. We are all called to console our sisters and brothers.” (Pope Francis)

I make a daily resolution to bring words of

comfort and reconciliation to someone who is sad

or worried in my family, at work, during my

leisure activities, in my retirement home etc...

4. EVERY DAY, SAY A PRAYER Lourdes is a haven of prayer. In Lourdes you see people

of all ages and continents in prayer before the statue of the Virgin Mary or Saint Bernadette, in a basilica or a chapel, at the Grotto or on a way of the Cross, during a procession or when lighting a candle.

“In prayer we experience the compassion of the Father, full of merci-ful love.” (Pope Francis)

I make a daily resolution to move forward

in my spiritual life by, for instance,

saying a prayer or visiting a church.

Charles de Foucauld said, “To pray is to

think of God with love”.

5. EVERY DAY, GIVE SOME OF YOUR TIME TO SOMEBODY ELSE

Lourdes is a time for others. In Lourdes, you marvel at the multifaceted generosity which unfolds before your eyes. Through the constant activity of an ‘army’ of volunteers you become aware of the gift each one is offering, the gift of their own personal time.

“If our hearts and actions are inspired by charity, by divine love, then our communication will be touched by God's own power.” (Pope Francis)

I make a daily resolution to spare just a

minute of my precious time for someone

I don’t usually feel like listening to in

order to grow as one in compassion. And,

if I wish to, later on I can give some of

my time to Lourdes by contacting the

‘Volunteer service’ of the Sanctuary on

the site www.lourdes-france.org

WISHING YOU ALL A GOOD RETURN TO SCHOOL AND WORK!

Lillian’s good resolution“I had the great joy of being able to visit Mary in Lourdes on 8th December 2015. I felt the need to return as a volunteer in the Sanctuary. I make rosaries which I take to have blessed and, after praying with them, I give them to the sick people Our Lady entrusts to me. Since my visit to Lourdes, my life is richer and more joyful.” Lilian (Argentina)

Bernadette said… Bernadette Soubirous consoled peo-ple in their difficulties with the carefulness of a guardian angel. There was never a question, a ges-ture or a glance to encourage any further intimacy. Just one phrase, “I’ll pray for you”, which gave people the impression she understood their difficulties and would intercede before God to re-lieve their burden. Join the Family of Our Lady of LourdesTo be a messenger of Lourdes in Bernadette’s footsteps, be-come a member of the Family of Our Lady of Lourdes. You will be committed to your dai-ly prayer, remembering the Pope’s intentions especially on the days of a Marian feast and anniversary of the appari-tions of Lourdes. You will go to confession at least once

a month, and if possible you will go to Mass every Sunday and give your time to others. When you return to Lourdes you will make a special effort to welcome pilgrims, espe-cially during celebrations and processions. You will gain a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions fixed by the Church (confession, commun-

ion, prayer for the Pope’s in-tentions) and by being faithful to the above commitments, on 8th December, on 11th and 18th February, on 25th March, on 15th and 22nd August. Every Saturday, you will be included in the prayers of the Mass and of the Rosary at the Grotto. www.lourdes-france.org
