NO EARLY DISMISSAL PRIOR TO CHRISTMAS OR SUMMER VACATION

There will be no early dismissal of students on the last day of school prior to the Christmas break or summer vacation. The Toronto Catholic District School Board, at the direction of the Ministry of Education, has completely harmonized School bus transportation services with the Toronto District School Board. This has resulted in significant savings for the TCDSB, but has taken away some of the flexibility we previously enjoyed. The practice of early dismissal on the last of school before Christmas Holidays and summer vacation is a practice of the TCDSB, which is not implemented by the TDSB. The TDSB will not be adopting this practice. Therefore, there will be no early dismissal on the Friday before Christmas or the Wednesday prior to summer vacation. Should you have any questions or concerns on this matter please contact your local Superintendent.

FR. FRUCTUOSO GARCIA PRESENTATION FOR STUDENTS

Father Fructuoso Garcia of St. John the Baptist Church in Toronto has expressed an interest in visiting schools throughout the Toronto Catholic District School Board to raise funds for missions in Ecuador, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. His presentation focuses on becoming the best we can be, good hygiene, healthy living for the body and soul, and developing our mental skills. Father has become a walking telephone directory, filing 1,000 phone numbers in his head to recite with rapidity upon request. The presentations last approximately 35 minutes in total, and students are asked to donate $1 each on the day of the presentation.

If your school wishes to learn more, or would like to invite Fr. Garcia to visit your school, please contact him at 416-603-2266.

MILLENNIUM EXCELLENCE AWARD PROGRAM 2007 Entrance Awards

In 2007, the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation will grant 1,052 entrance awards to students beginning post-secondary studies for the first time as part of its Millennium Excellence Award Program. The entrance awards seek to recognize the leaders of today and tomorrow and emphasize the importance of supporting their contributions to our country’s future. Millennium excellence awards are not prizes for benchmarks achieved – they are investments in the development of exceptional individuals who will have long, productive careers and whose accomplishments will benefit Canada as a whole. The foundation distributes up to five per cent of its annual allocation through its Millennium Excellence Award Program. The Foundation will grant the following entrance awards for use during the 2007-2008 academic year: • 100 national awards of $20,000, distributed in annual allotments. • 241 provincial/territorial awards of $16,000, disbursed in annual allotments. • 711 one-time local awards of $4,000. Eligibility Criteria In order to be eligible for an entrance award, an applicant must: • Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a protected person within the meaning of the Immigration and

Refugee Protection Act. • Be entering his or her first year of full-time undergraduate studies leading to a first post-secondary degree,

diploma or certificate. • Be enrolling in a Canadian post-secondary institution (college, CEGEP, university or institute) recognized by

his or her provincial student loan program in the 2007-2008 academic year. • Be enrolling in a program of at least eight months’ duration leading to an undergraduate degree, certificate or

diploma. Candidates for national and provincial/territorial awards must be enrolled in a program of at least two years’ duration.

Selection Criteria • Leadership: demonstrated capacity to guide and motivate others. • Good citizenship and community service: commitment to serving and improving your community. • Innovation: ingenuity and a talent for implementing new ideas. • Academic achievement: ability to maintain a solid academic record. General Rules • In order to receive an entrance award, laureates must have been accepted at a recognized Canadian post-

secondary institution (college, CEGEP, university or technical institute). The award offer is conditional upon verification of your enrolment.

• Renewal of a provincial/territorial or national award depends on the laureates’ ability to maintain a consistent academic record and demonstrate a continued commitment to leadership, community service and innovation.

School by 5:00 p.m. on January 11. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes and be prepared to dance. All participants will be taught a short routine which they will then perform in small groups for the audition panel.

All candidates for Godspell should fill out the information sheet below and send it to the Arts Department, CEC or bring it to their audition. Each person will be asked to present a monologue and a song of his or her choice. It is suggested that you pick a song that suits your voice and character. The audition will take approximately 10 to15 minutes. All staff members interested in auditioning for the Chorus are encouraged to attend the dance audition on Thursday, January 11th 2007 as this is a highly energetic and active show! Godspell has 10 lead characters, 5 male and 5 female that act, sing, and must be comfortable moving energetically. Character descriptions and vocal ranges are outlined below.

Vocal Ranges and Character Descriptions Characters Vocal Range Descriptions Jesus Tenor High G#: He is charismatic, high energy, charming, funny, gentle, but with strength. Others

instinctively follow him. John the Baptist/John

Baritone E He is the most ardent disciple who begins to question and rebel. He is charismatic and handsome. He is the most "serious" and intellectual of the group and has a good sense of physical comedy.

Lamar Tenor High A He is not the brightest in the bunch and is a little slow on the uptake. He has a great sweetness and innocence about him. He must be a very good singer.

Jeffrey Tenor High D (falsetto): He is impish and playful and has a very high level of energy. Herb Baritone He does not sing any real solos, but should be able to carry baritone harmonies.

He is the comedian; the class clown. He can do a hundred voices and imitations. He is more of a comedian than a vocalist.

Robin Alto She is a bit of a tomboy who is open and sweet. Peggy Alto She is the shy one with an “earth mother” kind of warmth to her. She is

sometimes a little slow to get things, but when she does, she commits all the way. Sonia Low Alto (D below middle C) She is sassy, slightly cynical and she is the most urban of the group. Gilmer Mezzo She is the female equivalent of the class clown. She is goofy, a cut-up and is more

of a comedian than a vocalist (sings the least). Joanne - Soprano High A/C She is the confident one who is a show-off. She is the first one to volunteer, but

often before she really understands what is going on.

Smiles for Kokou Christophe Prince of Peace students welcome boy from Togo, West Africa

Kokou Christophe Azoukpo and his mother Yawo Ahedonou arrived safe and sound at Toronto's Pearson International Airport at 12:54 p.m. on Sunday, November 5 after a 22-hour flight from Togo, West Africa. Six year old Kokou has come from Togo for an operation at Sick Kids' to remove a very large tumour from his face. He is shown in the picture holding a “happy face” card made by students in the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

Prince of Peace Catholic School students, retired principal Bob Kalisz and members of The Cultural Association of Togolese of Ontario were at the Airport to greet Kokou and his mother. They were joined by the regional sales director of Air France, Adeline Piekham, who arranged for a donation of the air fare and special care for Kokou during the trip. This is a story that has its origin in World Youth Day 2002. Pilgrims from Togo stayed at Prince of Peace Catholic School in Scarborough and they told the story of the many challenges and hardships of life in Togo. The school began a partnership with communities in Togo. In July 2004, the school principal visited Togo and returned with stories and pictures of Kokou. Then in July 2005, one of the Catholic Children's Aid Workers in Toronto, who works in TCDSB schools, visited Togo and met the child. Together, they initiated contact with the Herbie Fund. Through the support of the Herbie Fund at Sick Kids', Kokou will undergo a series of medical assessments followed by an operation to remove the tumour from his face. The Prince of Peace community has committed to raising $31,000.00 to replenish the Herbie Fund to assist with the cost of the operation. To date, over $23,000.00 has been raised. To find out more, go to www.catog.org. Click on "English" and on the second page, click on "OUR PROJECTS". Schools can help the Prince of Peace community reach the goal of $31,000 by having students make "happy face" cards and attach a loonie or toonie to them. Please contact Prince of Peace teacher Al Francis at the email address below for more information. Information: [email protected]

Haber Collects Hockey East Rookie of the Week Honors BOSTON- After shutting out Vermont, 3-0, in her collegiate debut, freshman Melissa Haber has been named the Hockey East Mission Hockey Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. On Sunday at Walter Brown Arena, the Toronto, Ont., native recorded 23 saves in the game, including a third-period offensive attack during which she stopped 17 shots, to help her team improve to 6-0-0 (2-0-0 HE) on the year.

Haber helped BU remain stellar on the penalty kill, holding the Catamounts 0-for-8 on the day. The Terriers’ 4-0 decision represented their second shutout in as many days, as the team blanked Vermont, 3-0, on Saturday. Haber spent last year playing for Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School, where she was named team MVP all four years.

Boston University is riding a six game winning streak and remains one of four teams in the country to have a perfect record so far in the 2006-07 campaign. The Terriers have the distinction of being the only unranked team with a flawless record. The back-to-back shutouts set a program record for the Terriers, who travel to New Hampshire on Sunday, Oct. 29 to face the second-ranked Wildcats. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Whittemore Center.

Note: Melissa Haber (Loretto Abbey Alumnae) went to Boston U on a hockey scholarship this year
