Richard Sharp, Ph.D., Director of Bioethics Research at the Cleveland Clinic presents on direct-to-consumer genomics and the future of health care. Dr. Sharp received his training in philosophy and medical ethics at Michigan State University. Prior to joining the Cleveland Clinic in 2007, Dr. Sharp taught bioethics at Baylor College of Medicine and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he directed the Program in Environmental Health Policy and Ethics. His research examines the promotion of informed patient decision-making in clinical research, particularly research that involves genetic analyses.TRANSCRIPT

Optimism about DTC Genomics
• Expanded access to genetic information may prompt some individuals to assume more responsibility for health-promoting behaviors.
• After receiving personal genomic test results, individuals may be more open to discussing diseases that may run in their family with their doctors and relatives.
• DTC genetic services may play a major role in developing the next generation of strategies for patient education and risk counseling (particularly strategies that do not involve physicians).
