The Year of Faith announced by Pope Benedict XVI began on October 11, 2012 and concludes on No-
vember 24, 2013. The first day of this Year of Faith coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the open-
ing of the Second Vatican Council and the twentieth anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism
of the Catholic Church.
Pope Benedict XVI referred to this Year of Faith as “…a summons to an authentic and renewed conver-
sion to the Lord, the one Savior of the world” (Porta Fidei 6) and proclaimed, “To rediscover the content
of the faith that is professed, celebrated, lived and prayed, and to reflect on the act of faith, is a task that
every believer must make his own, especially in the course of this year” (Porta Fidei 9).
Throughout this yearlong observance, the Diocesan Institute for Catechetical and Pastoral Formation is
offering a variety of faith formation opportunities to help you renew your relationship with Jesus Christ
and deepen your Catholic Faith. Included are sessions on the content of the Apostles’ Creed, the teach-
ings of the Second Vatican Council, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
For more information on how the Year of Faith is being celebrated throughout the Diocese of Harris-
burg, visit the “Year of Faith” webpage on the diocesan website at www.hbgdiocese.org.
INTRODUCTORY COURSES
I02 Introduction to Scripture
“Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of
Christ” (Saint Jerome). In other words, those who

through His Revelation in Sacred Scripture; the
story of salvation history that is woven throughout
Scripture; the relationship between Sacred Scrip-
ture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium
(teaching office of the Church); what it means to
say that Scripture is both “inspired” and
“inerrant”; keys to correctly approaching, under-
standing and interpreting Scripture; a brief over-
view of the individual books of both the Old and
New Testaments; how to choose a Scripture trans-
lation and tips for personal Scripture study.

E220 The Catechism of the Catholic Church at Age 20
Blessed Pope John Paul II promulgated the Cate-
chism of the Catholic Church on October 11, 1992,
and later wrote that the Catechism provides “a full,
complete exposition of Catholic doctrine, enabling
everyone to know what the Church professes, cele-
brates, lives and prays in her daily life.” Pope
Benedict XVI has urged all Catholics, during this
Year of Faith, to make a concerted effort to redis-
cover the beauty and truth of the Catholic Faith,
and the Catechism is the ideal resource for this en-
deavor.
This two-part presentation will help participants
become (re)acquainted with the Catechism through
a consideration of its origins, purpose, structure
and content. Included will be practical guidance
and resources for individuals and study groups
seeking to mine the many riches of the Catholic
Faith in this wonderful resource.
Participants should bring a copy of the Catechism
of the Catholic Church or purchase a copy
($10.00) at the first session.

E232 Survey of the Sixteen Documents of Vatican II to Commemorate the 50th Anniversity of the Second Vatican Council
Since his election in 2005, Pope Benedict XVI has con-
tinued to emphasize that an understanding of the texts of
the Vatican II documents is inextricably linked to a cor-
rect understanding of the Council itself….there can be
no false separation between the letter of Vatican II and
the spirit of Vatican II. With this in mind, the primary
aim of this course is to present an overview of the 16
documents of the Second Vatican Council. In Lent of
2013, this four week course will give an overview of the
last eight of the documents of the Council in the order in
which they were promulgated, including the Constitu-
tions, Dei Verbum and Gaudium et Spes. Our primary
resource will be the Vatican II documents themselves.
