2 DRIVING INDEPENDENCE

29TH ANNUAL CONFERENCEJANUARY 8-10, 2018 • INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

2018 IPSA ANNUAL CONFERENCE ATTENDEES:

TODD L. MARTIN, CEOINDEPENDENT PROFESSIONAL SEED ASSOCIATION

Dear Members and Guests,

Over the last three years, you have heard me talk about “creating value”. I really believe in the concept. Whether it is here at Independent Professional Seed Association (IPSA), or at your company, creating value is what helps us grow and thrive.

There has never been a more important time for you to raise your voice and show how you create value for your customers. We are facing consolidation, depressed commodity prices, attacks from market disruptors and new global challenges.

Despite those challenges, I have confidence in the Independent Seed Companies.

Over this past year, I have had the opportunity to see more investment in the seed industry and companies looking to invest in agriculture. Why would they consider this given the challenges? Because they know it is a great time to be in agriculture.

Independent Seed Companies have always been fast to move. You have adjusted quickly to changing market conditions. That is definitely a strength. Additionally, because of YOU, and the prevalence of licensing of traits and genetics, the differentiation in product offers and seed quality, there is COMPETITON in the SEED MARKET.

It is one of the big reasons that Independents continue to grow and thrive in the marketplace. Make no mistake – seed is not a commodity business. Farmers see the products that they need and want at competitive prices because there are independent seed companies. Organizations that would discount the value created by something like seed quality clearly don’t understand the seed business.

This is the heart of creating value.

That value creation is what we have learned from you and try to perpetuate at IPSA.

Our value creation to you comes in the form of partnerships with Buckhorn for discounted seed boxes and Central Bag with their poly bag program. Finally, we are opening a new offering in vehicle purchasing through a partnership with Saxon Fleet Services. We continue to work on health care options with the changes in Washington, and we fight the battles on the fronts we can with market disruptors.

I am privileged to work with a special group of people. The group of leaders that directs the activities of IPSA are selfless in their commitment to the Association and our membership. Over the last three months, they have met with major suppliers and voiced the issues that matter to you. We have committed leaders who give of their time and talents to support and grow IPSA. That is your Board of Directors. Never doubt, there is a lot of work that goes into that position.

Today, I confirm to you that the state of our Association is strong. IPSA remains financially secure with cash reserves. Our membership has seen strong growth in 2017 with not only new Associate Members, but also new Seed Company Members. Our retention on membership remains high.

I am proud to be in service to you in an industry that I so highly value. IPSA is your Association and we are here for you!

4 DRIVING INDEPENDENCE

29TH ANNUAL CONFERENCEJANUARY 8-10, 2018 • INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

DISRUPTION AND CHAOS IN THE FARM INPUT MARKETPLACEAlternative business models are threatening to disrupt the traditional agricultural inputs marketing channel. Businesses serving the farmer of today and tomorrow need to understand what is behind this chaos, and how these alternative business models really work. During this session Dr. Dave Downey will share his insights on how Independent Seed Companies counteract these emerging threats, make pro-active adjustments that will protect, defend, and even grow market share. Additionally, he will discuss how seed companies can adapt to the rapidly changing grower needs with insights from the Purdue University Large Commercial Producer Survey results. Participants will also hear from Colleen Callahan, a former farm radio broadcaster, Past president of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting and member of the NAFB Hall of Fame. Colleen will bring her real-world experience to the session to give members insight into how to protect, promote and drive your brand during times of disruption. In addition to her broadcasting background, Colleen brings broad government and private sector experience to the table that she is now utilizing with her clientele under C2 Consultancy. Key questions to consider• Is this just a fad? Will it last?• Are relationships enough?• How do you defend your integrity?• What’s your brand and how do you promote and defend it?• What do growers really value?• How do you get paid for the unique value you create (beyond product performance)?

W. DAVID DOWNEY Executive Director, Center for Food and Agricultural Business, and Professor Emeritus, Purdue University Dave Downey founded and serves as the executive director of Purdue University’s Center for Food and Agricultural Business. He is responsible for the development of executive and management education programs for a wide array of individual companies, trade

associations and public programs. Dave is also professor emeritus of agricultural marketing at Purdue University. He has taught courses in agri-selling and agri-marketing strategy and helped develop Purdue’s major in agri-sales and marketing, the first such program in the country. Over his career, he has taught and counseled more than 10,000 students.

Dave’s primary focus is on marketing and selling to farmers. He has been deeply involved in many studies of farmer buying behavior, including Purdue’s Large Commercial Producer Project, a regular study of the attitudes and buying patterns of large growers across North America.

Dave is widely recognized as an agribusiness consultant and respected author in North America and in various countries around the world. Dave was recently invited to speak with several hundred agronomic distributors in Brazil and has presented seminars to ag retailers in Argentina, Central America and the Caribbean. He has been invited to speak in the United Kingdom, France and Poland. He also taught an intensive, two-week marketing course in an agricultural MBA program in Beijing, China.

AGVOCATING FOR MODERN AGRICULTURE, PRESENTED BY BAYER The world is changing rapidly and those changes are not only reshaping agriculture, they are also shifting consumer expectations about their food, where it comes from, how it’s grown or raised and the role farmers and the agricultural industry at-large should play. We need to move conversations about our industry in a positive direction and take action to shape farming’s future by proactively educating, advocating and engaging industry voices to help tell our story. Bayer’s AgVocacy workshop will offer an overview of public perception challenges the industry faces according to current research studies. Participants will engage in exercises, group work, and enactments of real-world scenarios to help improve communication behaviors and techniques, and leave with the knowledge, confidence and techniques to “agvocate” within personal and professional circles, and with the public.

ALLEN GENT Strategic Business Lead – Seeds, Bayer Crop ScienceAllen received a Bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Missouri and an MBA from Webster University in St. Louis, Mo. 29TH ANNUAL CONFERENCEJANUARY 8-10, 2018 • INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

PRE CONFERENCE SESSIONSCOLLEEN CALLAHAN Founder, Colleen Callahan Consultancy (C3)Colleen Callahan grew up on a purebred Hampshire hog, Angus cattle and grain farm near Milford, Illinois. While attending Milford High School she took agricultural classes but was not permitted to be a member of the National FFA Organization because women were not admitted into FFA until after her high school graduation. After

receiving her bachelor’s degree in agricultural communications from the University of Illinois, Colleen became the first woman Agribusiness Director for WMBD Radio and TV in Peoria. After 30 years there, Colleen started her own communications firm. She continued farm broadcasting at WGFA Radio in Watseka, IL until April, 2010.

As a small business owner, Colleen specialized in giving motivational speeches, facilitating meetings and debates and connecting people, enabling them to develop strong professional relationships. Colleen’s passion for agriculture has taken her all over the world, including a journey to Afghanistan and Iraq, paid at her own expense, at the invitation of the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

She was the first female President of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters and was Chairman of its Ethics Committee. Colleen served as a member of the St. Francis Medical Center Women’s Health Services Public Relations Committee and was a member of the National Association of Women Business Owners. In February of 2008, Colleen was unanimously selected by the 18th Congressional District Democrat County Chairs as their candidate for the District’s open seat. In seven short months (and her first effort to run for an elected office), Colleen received over 117,000 votes.

Colleen’s husband, Richard Burns, also a 1973 University of Illinois graduate in Agricultural Science, is a regional sales manager for Burrus Seed. They raise purebred Angus cattle on their farm near Kickapoo, Illinois and own a farm in DeWitt County, Illinois. Their daughter, Brittney, is an attorney in Chicago, Illinois.

MAKING SEED QUALITY GREAT AGAINSeed quality is the backbone of any IPSA member’s corn and soybean lineup. Farmers continually demand higher quality seed to maximize yield, push the early planting windows and enhance farm profitability. As the leading contract seed producer for independent companies, Gro Alliance understands the critical importance of high quality seed. In this half-day session, attendees will learn how Gro Alliance’s commitment to employee training, the most advanced technology and rigorous processes deliver the highest quality seed in the industry. Further, various industry experts will provide additional insight in the areas of seed testing, seed conditioning equipment and show attendees how to improve seed quality in their own operations. The session will also discuss the differences between GMO, organic and high-purity non-GMO seed corn production. In closing the session, Gro Alliance will provide an overview of how independent companies can use seed quality as a competitive advantage during the era of mega-consolidations.

JIM SCHWEIGERT President, Gro AllianceJim, a third-generation seedsman, is the President of Gro Alliance, the largest independently-owned contract corn and soybean seed production company in North America. The company is also a leader in custom corn breeding and seed corn nursery services.

Having worked for corporate public relations firms in Minneapolis, Chicago and Atlanta after growing up in the family seed business, Jim’s unique background and experience make him one of the seed industry’s leaders in innovation.

Jim was honored as the 2009 recipient of Seed World magazine’s “Future Giant” and served as the regional Vice President to Canada for the executive board of the American Seed Trade Association and Canadian Seed Trade Association from 2009-2015 and again from 2017 to present. Jim also served as the chair of the non-profit, Seed Programs International from 2012-2016.

29TH ANNUAL CONFERENCEJANUARY 8-10, 2018 • INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

BREAKOUT DESCRIPTIONSHOW TO USE A COACHING PROGRAM TO DEVELOP YOUR SALES TEAM – Presented by Greg MartinelliNo longer can we just throw an army of sales people into the market and expect them to sink or swim. It’s too expensive and our candidate pool is too shallow. Join me as I walk through the features and benefits of a solid and sustainable sales coaching program. Learn how to invest your time now to reap the benefits immediately and in the future. A sales coaching discussion designed for the Ag Sales Professional.

Current Environment in the Industry:• Every year, 60,000 degreed employees retire from agribusinesses. Universities are only

graduating 30,000. Employee development is top priority right now, even if you don’t realize it.

• Today’s employees have more options and are more mobile than in any other moment in history.

• The seed industry is going through major consolidations as many agribusinesses are. This is a golden opportunity to find experienced sales people who get displaced in these changes.

• HR firms estimate the cost of replacing an employee at 3X their salary. Spend an hour learning how you can save yourself from this expense.

• Learn one of the most valuable tools for retaining young employees and integrating experienced employees into your organization

What will we cover?• The benefits of a solid coaching program• Best practices for coaching your ag sales professional• Examples of good and bad coaching practices• The uniqueness of coaching in ag!• The generational shift that is going on and how sales coaching fits perfectly into it!• Challenges to sustain the program!• An opportunity to discuss your challenges

LIES, DAMNED LIES AND STATISTICS. WHAT CAN SEED PRODUCERS LEARN FROM MARKET RESEARCH DATA ON FARMERS? – Presented by David SoorholtzThis breakout will provide an overview of how independent seed producers can use market research data collected from their farmer customers and ag advisors to make decisions in their operations. We will provide examples using proprietary data from our AMIS® seed study that addresses the following topics:

1. Dicamba and 2,4 D tolerant crops: What were grower’s attitudes and behaviors about these new technologies in 2017 and what do they expect to do differently with them in 2018?

2. Impact of seed and crop protection chemical mergers: Dow/DuPont/Pioneer, Bayer/Monsanto, BASF and Bayer crop protection products, FMC and DuPont crop protection products. What is the makeup and scope of the “new” companies.

3. Seed trait trends: What changes did growers make in 2017 and what do they expect to do differently in 2018?

PLANNING GROWTH FROM THE OWNER’S CHAIR – Presented by David AeschlimanThis course presents a strategic plan of how company owners can develop sales growth plans and how to implement those plans with full accountability for results. It begins with database development, sales data capture, on-going progress analysis and how to establish future goals. It continues through assigning responsibility to the sales force and how to monitor results. This presentation includes the use of individual sales performance agreements and accountability measures.

David Aeschliman, 41-year career business growth strategist as the owner of Growth Work, LLC, for more than 200 companies such as Wyffels Hybrids, Amana, Maytag, Morton Buildings, Kent Feeds, Alcoa, ADM and Ritchie Livestock Waterers, and heavily immersed in the seed industry since 1976, will provide step-by-step plans on how to grow a business, benchmark that growth and plan future years.

He will discuss specific expectations owners should help develop with their sales force and how to oversee the “coaching” aspect of that growth.

TELLING YOUR STORY – Presented by Shannon Latham If we don’t tell our own stories, how will anyone know the truth? The agriculture industry, as we all know, is a prime target for misinformation spread by celebrities and other activist groups with large followings and deep pockets. We have a responsibility, and a key role to play, in helping set the record straight.

So where do you start? Hint: you don’t need to be a scientist or a celebrity to be an effective seed ambassador. You simply need to be aware of the conversations taking place online and off, know how to access helpful communications resources (there are plenty out there!), and be willing to be an active community participant – whether it’s engaging in discussion with your online network, at the grocery story, your local school, or the rotary club. Learn about the many tools and resources available to help tell YOUR story!

18 DRIVING INDEPENDENCE

29TH ANNUAL CONFERENCEJANUARY 8-10, 2018 • INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNERSThe Independent Professional Seed Association awarded scholarships to seven individuals for the 2017/2018 school year. Support from several current IPSA members, as well as gifts made years ago that have provided seed money to the program, made it possible to award the largest number of scholarships in the Association’s history.

IPSA’s Education Committee reviewed over 180 applicants and recommended the winners based on a combination of academic achievement, community and agricultural involvement, and other parameters.

JONAH BRANNONJonah is a high school senior in Puryear, Tenn. who will attend Murray State University in Murray, Ky. He is majoring in Agribusiness Economics with an emphasis in Crop Production. He was honored the valedictorian honor with a GPA of 4.0. Jonah is involved with the local FFA Chapter, standing at Vice President and previously as the Treasurer. Jonah was born and raised on a 550 farm of row crops, so his love of agriculture comes from the roots. He hopes to apply his love of agriculture to his future with a job to help carry on the family farm tradition.

CLARE GIETZELClare is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she is earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy. Paired with her Global Health and Environmental Studies minors, she hopes to use her degree to kickstart a career in plant breeding after graduating in May of 2018. In her time on campus, Clare has been heavily involved in several organizations including the Badger Crops Club, where she currently serves as the organization’s president. It was her involvement in the Crops Club that continued to fuel her passion for the industry and helped her make connections to companies like Dow AgroSciences and Mycogen Seeds, where she got to explore a sales role in the industry as a Commercial Sales Intern. Clare is looking forward to learning more about the IPSA’s role in the industry and networking with successful industry members. Thank you IPSA for supporting the academic efforts of passionate students.

SAM HARRISRaised in Central Arkansas, Sam is a double-major at the University of Arkansas, pursuing an undergraduate degree in agricultural business with a concentration in pre-law and agricultural leadership. At the University of Arkansas, Sam has evaluated extension services in rural India, lead community development programs in Vietnam, and is currently preparing to lead a pilot research exchange program in Dangriga, Belize to study information access and agricultural enterprise opportunities for smallholder farmers. On campus, Sam serves as President of Students Organization Outreach Involvement Experience (SOOIE), is the Assistant Director of Sponsorship for the Student Alumni Board, and is a member of Collegiate FFA. Passionate about political engagement and activism, he is the Vice Chair for Next Generation Engagement for the local Democratic Party. In April, Sam was named a recipient of the 2017 Harry S. Truman Scholarship because of his commitment to leadership and a career in public service. Determined to alleviate global food insecurity through international development and public policy, upon graduation he plans to obtain a JD and eventually return to the University of Arkansas to pursue an LLM in Agricultural and Food Law.

ARIELLE HURSTArielle Hurst is a Crop Production major at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia. She has a passion for the agriculture industry. In high school, she was actively involved in FFA and received her American FFA degree this past October. Arielle is also actively involved in the Agronomy Club at ABAC. She currently works for the USDA in peanut breeding and is an intern this summer for the Georgia Peanut Commission. Arielle recognizes the importance of independent seed companies and their relationship with growers in today’s competitive market. Arielle would like to thank her parents, grandparents, FFA advisor and ag professors at ABAC for instilling in her a love for agriculture and appreciation for the importance of the grower’s seed decision. She would also like to thank the Independent Professional Seed Association for this scholarship opportunity. It is truly a blessing and will certainly help her in achieving her educational goals.

SAMANTHA TETENGrowing up on a corn and soybean farm in southeast Nebraska, I fell in love with agriculture from a young age. I was active in 4-H and then at my small high school, I was involved in numerous activities with the highlight being FFA. When my brother started his own independent crop consulting business, I enjoyed scouting fields with him, which led me to my niche in this industry. Currently, I am a junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in Agronomy with a minor in Agribusiness. Over the summers, I have had the great opportunities to intern with Helena Chemical Company in south central Kansas and Syngenta in Nebraska. Serving as president of the UNL Agronomy Club is one of my favorite activities at the university as well as competing on the Soils, Crops, and Weeds Contest Judging Teams. I am also honored to be a College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Ambassador, a Teacher’s Assistant for the Introductory Plant Science Lab, and an undergraduate research assistant in the soils department. The next step for me is to attend graduate school and then pursue career as a technical agronomist in a national or global chemical or seed company. My goal is to be alongside producers or retailers in managing their resources and growing commodities to make their farm profitable. Beyond agronomy, I have a dream of making a difference through education. I aspire to show others the reality in the farm to table process. I would love to be an active part of an outreach program such as speaking at conferences or to urban schools, but I can also advocate simply through my everyday actions to positively portray agriculture. Agronomy, encompassing everything from soils to insects to weeds, is where my passion lies in agriculture, and no matter what company or job title I end up with, my education provides the foundation I need to thrive in my future. That is why it is a great honor to me to receive the Independent Professional Seed Association Scholarship, and it will be used to help me further my education in agronomy and later in plant pathology.

MEETING MINUTES

It’s one of your earliest decisions…’What seed variety will I plant in the spring? What tool will I use to combat weed resistance?’ In past seasons you may have wanted to plant glufosinate-tolerant or LibertyLink® cotton or soybeans, but were uncertain if the chemistry would be affordable for you to use during herbicide application timing. Worry no more!

As the second largest global manufacturer of glufosinate, UPI is pleased to reliably supply the market with Interline® herbicide. Manufactured in our new state-of-the-art facility, Interline provides an HRAC Group 10 herbicide that controls the toughest resistant pigweed, waterhemp, marestail, and ragweed.

So choose and plant your glufosinate tolerant seeds with confidence, and Interline herbicide will be ready and waiting in the spring. To learn more, contact your local UPI distributor, UPI sales representative or visit us at www.upi-usa.com.

24 DRIVING INDEPENDENCE

29TH ANNUAL CONFERENCEJANUARY 8-10, 2018 • INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

ANNUAL CONFERENCE COMMITTEE REPORTThe Annual Conference Committee has been busy planning another exciting event tailored to our members. The conference, and its content, continues to rate as an invaluable benefit of an IPSA membership. Leaders and members worked closely together to construct a successful plan. This year’s lineup of speakers highlights various perspectives that are current, educational and interesting. Topics include production, sales, marketing, and general administrative functions.

Our membership encompasses several small businesses that don’t always have the time or resources to address many of these areas. This is a great opportunity for our attendees to have timely access to these relevant topics.

Every year, our annual conference continues to grow, and we strive to improve this educational and engaging experience. Having a member driven committee of professionals ensures we are working together on a successful plan to bring value to our association. We would like to thank each one of these individuals who took time out of their busy schedules to help us with these productive planning sessions. Tim Bratland and Jeff Meints, Co-chairs

EDUCATION COMMITTEE REPORTThe IPSA Education committee had another solid year for scholarship applications, 181 scholarships were submitted and reviewed by the Education Committee, and through the generosity of the association and its members, five students were selected for a $2,000 scholarship. We have three students joining us to receive their award at the annual conference, and two students were awarded their scholarship and attended ASTA CSS in Chicago in Dec.

This year the committee updated the application process, and added the element of a Skype interview for the top 12 candidates. Although the interviews took some time, it was well worth it as the committee wanted to make sure that it awarded scholarships to the best candidates and that the best candidates are able attend the annual conference with the long-term goal of having the students enter the seed industry upon graduation.

The committee agreed to offer the students mentors again this year at the annual conference. We got outstanding feedback from the scholarship winners from last year that this was a great part of their experience and we want to make sure that the students are getting the opportunity to network with all the members.

We want to thank all of the members for their support of the Education Committee and the scholarship program. We look forward to you continuing to communicate the scholarship within your family, organizations, and community.Jeff Skemp and Brett Hodnefield

IPSA RESEARCH TRIAL CHANGES REPORT2017 is a year of change for the IPSA Research Trials. Early in 2017, the IPSA Board determined to add tangible value for members with better and more relevant data at a similar or lower cost. A task force was created with IPSA members participating. Testing protocols were updated in early February. A new company, R Foley Services,

LLC was selected to coordinate, treat and distribute seed for the testing companies for the 2017 IPSA Research Trials. R Foley Services will report results at this year’s 2018 IPSA Conference in Indianapolis. Mark Denzler

MEMBER SERVICES COMMITTEEThe IPSA Member Services Committee strives to bring additional value to the members of our association. In 2017, the committee continued to strengthen the focus on seed treatment and seed enhancement options through our research program. The research program has been successfully transitioned to an annual task force that will continue to expand and grow our program.

The Member Services Committee continued to offer the very popular Buckhorn Box Program that allows members to purchase Buckhorn boxes at reduced rates.

The committee is also pleased to announce a working relationship with Saxon Fleet Services to develop Customer Assistance Programs for purchasing vehicles with Ford, GM and Dodge along with other fleet service opportunities. Final details are still being worked on at this time and we will announce in the newsletter when everything is complete.

The Member Service Committee continues to explore health insurance platforms along with business efficiency related programs. If you have suggestions for the committee to investigate, please contact Todd Martin at [email protected] or one of the committee members. 2017 TREASURER’S REPORTAs a 501 C (3) non-profit association, IPSA operates in a manner that uses your funds constructively to achieve the Association’s goals and programs.

The audited financial data for the fiscal year ended May 31 showed Total Assets for the Association are $817,845 a decrease on $20,409 while Net Assets increased by $91,957 from the June 2016 audit report.

Total Revenue for the Association stands at $1,175,294 for 2017. IPSA reserve investment account stands at $577,453. These reserve accounts include cash reserves for annual Association expenses.

Revenue sources for the Association remain fairly evenly split among dues, Annual Conference income and agronomic research program income.

Respectfully submitted,Bret Hodnefield, Treasurer

You can learn a lot in college, but you can learn even more from life. Like how to treat people with dignity and respect.
