St. Patrick’s Primary School Pancake Tuesday On Tuesday the staff and students at were given their first opportunity for the year to support Caritas Australia through our involvement in Pancake Tuesday. Each student proudly wore their Caritas t-shirt or apron to acknowledge who we were fundraising for. Thank you to those families who supplied the toppings for our pancakes. There was quite a selection for our customers to choose from. A sincere thank you to Mark Lacey from IGA who prepared the BBQ for us and assisted to extinguish some energetic flames every now and then. Thank you to the generous Pyramid Hill community who enabled us to raise a grand total of $206.40 Caritas Australia continue to support the vulnerable and less fortunate in our world. Our fundraising efforts towards the end of 2013 were directed to the Philippines where the effects of Typhoon Haiyan continue to be felt. Our students have been learning about their community and have been involved in many varied activities to promote and support their learning. We are very grateful to many people in our community who have assisted our learning. The Junior class visited an important landmark in our community - the Police station. Thank you to Jason Brady for his tour of the Police station and the opportunity to take a seat in the back of the Police van. Jason answered many questions and set a few people straight on the finer details and differences between the role of a policeman in real life, and of that in the movies.

We welcomed 'Iron Man Glen' (as students now refer to him) into our classroom last week to talk about the Iron Man event which was held in Pyramid Hill quite some time ago. Glen promoted an active lifestyle and healthy eating habits, all of which contributed to his success in the past. It was wonderful to see his memorabilia and his photos and to listen to his stories.

New Minister For Presbyterians

The Pyramid Hill Presbyterian Church has

warmly welcomed the appointment of the Rev

Miles Fagan to the Charge of North-West Lakes

which takes in Pyramid Hill, Kerang and Swan

Hill. He has already commenced duties in each

of these places.

Rev. Fagan, together with his wife Robyn and

teenage children Rebecca and Joel, recently

moved from Noorat in south-western Victoria

to live in Kerang.

Rev Fagan grew up in Aspendale, a beachside

suburb of Melbourne and started work as a fitter

and turner at Williamstown Naval Dockyard—

later to be known as Tenix. He worked there in

various fields finishing in 2004 in a Projects

Controls role.

His desire to serve the Lord, led him and his

family to be committed to full time study at the

Presbyterian Theological College at Box Hill.

His first parish was at Noorat from he has come

to North-West Lakes.

Rev Fagan has a strong background in

Chaplaincy and related roles, principally with

sports chaplaincy and the Country Fire

Authority, and he heads the denomination’s

Chaplaincy Committee. He is a Naval Reserve

Chaplain and will be away from time to time,

serving in the Navy.

Rev Fagan will be holding services in the

Tyndale Church, Victoria Street, Pyramid Hill

each Sunday at 2.30 pm and all are welcome.

Seniors Notes

Seniors Birthdays We will include

the birthdays each month several times in order that none slip by the memory radar. For March they begin on the 6th when we will greet Lorraine Fawcett and Lorna Forster. Then on the 22nd it will be Jeanette Carroll who will expect breakfast in bed and we hope someone looks after Roscoe on the 23rd. Lastly, we wish “All the Best” to Jessie Amos who can look forward to something special and we hope she has a great day on the 30th. Thank you Peg and others who give me some notes to build the Seniors Notes around. The usual members played 500 on Tuesday 25th - one side won 3 games and so partners were changed and finished 2 to 1. On Thursday 27th all played for themselves and Trevor won 2480 with Jess 1740, Dave 1220 and Jeanette 1150. The Secret Score (not the lowest), although this time it was very close, was won by Peg At Bingo played on Friday 28th Ernie won 5 games, Rhonda, Ian Mac and Peg won 3 each and the even ended with afternoon tea.

Visit to Prairie Park Homestead,

Mitiamo.

A trip to John Forbes’s homestead at Mitiamo has been organised for Monday 24th March. The cost for the day is $10 which covers bus and morning tea. Please phone Carol (5455 7401) or June (5455 7078) if you would like to go.

Rhys & Rhondda

Hall Visit

Pyramid Hill

Rhys & Rhondda Hall returned to Pyramid Hill last week and gave a

most informative presentation of their work with Across Ministries in

South Sudan. Across Ministries is an interdenomina-

tional, international Christian organization focused on South Sudan

and works to build communities, improve education and livelihoods,

strengthen Churches and teach about health.

Rhys directs the radio project by the use of solar powered digital audio

players and together with Rhondda, they strive to give the people of South

Sudan a hope for the future by rehabilitating refugees and groups of

displaced people. A pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by

all who attended, many of whom remembered Rhondda from the time her father, Rev Rhys Price, was the Presbyterian Minister in this area.

Monday Night Netball Welcome to the new season for 2014 and particularly to our new players! The first game for the season was not a tightly contested one with the Blue team finding their form early taking the game early to finish 39 - 8. Once Rosie makes an appearance things are sure to look up for the Red team. Ash's injuries should be healed up in a couple of weeks, and after a well rested honeymoon he should be fighting fit to enhance the Red team’s prospects as well. The 8 o'clock game was a close one in the early stages, although Green slipped away from the Purple team finishing 27 - 19. Hopefully Abbey's injury is only a minor one requiring a rest. With her father offering great support and reassurance on the side line she is sure to be up and about in no time. Great to see our newest umpire Katrina wearing her umpiring vest on the night. Regardless of new or old to the scene, all umpires are to be respected and obeyed. Great to have you back Zoe. More District History Part 9 - By Ern Ferris

1895 December 6 : Our Bald Rock correspondent writes: Harvesting operations are in full swing here now, the hum of the Strippers being heard all around. The yield is a bit disappointing, oats, on an average, only about 9 bushels and wheat 6 bushels per acre. January31 The weather appears to be the principal topic of conversation, but with the thermometer at 112degrees in the shade, even the desultory conversa-tion is found to be hard to keep going and the name ‘perspiring Australia” is very applicable in our case. June 19 Stock are dying fast, many farmers having no cattle left. Crops are very backward but should the present favourable weather continue, they will be brought on materially. Without a copious rain soon, the season will be more disastrous than last as all the reserve feed is exhausted. Farmers are travelling miles to obtain feed.. Rabbits June 19 1896 A meeting of farmers was held at Mr J Sherlock’s house, Sylvaterre, to consult on the host action to be taken to clearing the neighbouring State Forest of rabbits. Mr W Johnson was in the Chair. After the question had been well discussed, Mr Fraser moved that the Government be requested to visit and inspect the forest. Mr Wales seconded the resolution which was carried. Another proposition was agreed to, viz, that copies of the resolutions carried be sent to Mr McColl to be laid before the minister of lands. Canary Island 1896 December 4. Rain appears to have been very partial, in fact confined to a narrow strip, the points registered being as follows :- Canary Island North 2 at Walker’s, Burrows 81, Gladfield 37. A few miles to the north there was none. In some cases the rain was accompanied by hail and heavy wind. Some of the standing crops are laid almost flat, stooks scattered and threshing, stripping and cutting at a standstill for a day or two. The oat crops stripped so far have yielded about 6 bags per acre. While the rain has done a considerable amount of good. The Amber-cane and other fodder crops were very backward owing to the baked state of the surface, and this rain has brought most of young plants through, From the unsettled state of the atmos-phere a further downpour of thunder showers may be looked for.

Calivil Rainfall 1897 January 4. The rainfall for the year 1896 was 10.32 inches. The harvest this year has been much better than last year, though some of the returns have not been up to expectations. The early crops were the best. The threshing is almost over in this district. It has been very hot but looks like a change.

BALD Rock 1897 January 15. The average yields for this district are , wheat 9 bushels per acre, oats 15 bushels, Cape barley 7 bushels. These returns certainly do not look too glowing, but when it is taken into consideration that there was no rain for two months before they were harvested the yield is deemed satisfactory.

Heatwave 1897 30th December: The phenomenally enduring heat of last week is found to have caused a large number of deaths in the colonies, and unprecedented record, probably having been made in Victoria. Already over forty have occurred inn the colony which are directly attributed to the heat, others who are laid up from the same cause will it is feared succumb also. The regrettable death of Mr Lawrence O’Dwyer, proprietor of the Pyramid Hotel, has aroused sympathy on all sides for the bereaved family The latter part of 1890’s were dry years, culminating in the disastrous drought of 1901-02.

Rabbits Sent overseas 1897 December

10. The exports which left Melbourne by the Royal Mail and other steamers were 310 tons of butter, 3000 carcases of mutton and a quantity of rabbits

Bowls Report 60 and Over: The Triple A guys, Alan J., Allan F., & Andy, played their sixty & over game at Leitchville last week. They had some good contests and managed a draw on one game. Obviously the spin bowler was sorely missed!

Saturday Pennant:

Both Division 2 & 3 travelled to Barham Sports to round off the season of the sectional matches. Despite giving it their all, Division 2 were not able to draw blood from the very strong Barham Sports team and consequently did not manage to force their way into a finals berth. Ian (Skip), Brian, Nola & Andrew played a draw – 22 all. Lionel (skip), Marie S., Andy & Terry lost 13 - 31 Beau, Glen, Helen & Graham lost 15 - 30 Missing a place in the final four was a disappointing finish to the season considering that marginal loses earlier in the season cost our side immensely. Division 3 fared a little better winning one rink but going down on the other two rinks. Charlie, John, Marie N., & Robyn were the strongholds winning 26 - 17 Les, Alan J., Guido & Gladys lost 27 - 18 Ernie, Allan F., Jean & Bill lost 21 - 24 The teams ventured home to celebrate the end of the season with a fine dinner at the local hotel. Now, we have tournament commitments to fulfil before we go into recess.

Geoff McGraw & the Melbourne

Boys Visit.

What a great social day was experi-enced by all as we showcased our town and our greens last Thursday when a group of fellows from Ballarat, Warrnambool, Melbourne, Gisborne, Kyneton & Bendigo toured to Pyramid Hill as part of their week long bowling trip in the Northern District. After providing them with a sumptuous meal, we split into teams and took them on in a couple of games of bowls. There was

There was much fun and laughter interspersed with some friendly banter. Penalties were imposed for a variety of offences and the fines which were paid unbegrudgingly accumulated to over $200. This money was to be forwarded to the Northern District Health Services. Semi Finals: The NDBA Management has granted the Semi-final Competi-tion for both Division 2 & 3 to be played this Saturday, March 8th at Pyramid Hill. To ensure that the place is looking immaculate and that we present our Club in the best way possible, we will be requiring everyone to do their bit. A working-bee was held on Wednesday morning; thanks to all who offered some time and energy. There will be plenty of catering to be done to accommodate the 96 players plus officials and spectators. If you are able to lend a hand in the kitchen please offer your assistance to Glenys & Nola. Barefoot Bowlers: Players of the Barefoot Bowling Competition please take note:

This note was included in last week’s

Press but from it there has been no

response. Please check carefully and

return any bowls that you have

borrowed. On the fifth night of play, a

duffle-style bowling bag containing

one bowl with a yellow bird emblem

went home to the wrong house. Could

you please check whether this bag,

which has initials in gold lettering on

the side, has mistakenly gone to your

place. The owner values it for

sentimental reasons and the bowl is

part of a set of four. If it is located

please return it to the Bowling Club

rooms or to Marie Noelker or Lionel

Mann. The Bowling Club would also

appreciate the return of any borrowed

bowls so that we can conduct an audit

of all Club equipment. Bowls may be

reissued for borrowing after the audit

is completed. Thank you.

Loddon Valley

Tennis In the last home and away round Sylvaterre made their way out the road to the picturesque cement ponds for the final game of the home and away season. The away team looked like they were in a little strife when young gun Al Miller rolled his ankle before tennis had even began, however he pulled through and showed how tough Terrick lads are by winning his three sets. Yarrawal-la young men’s side couldn't match Sylvaterre's experience, going down by 24 games. The ladies (plus Hugh) battled it out with Yarrawalla winning by a close 4 games. Heading into the mixed Yarrawalla had a few games to make up if they wanted to take the day out overall, after some close contests Sylvaterre showed their strength winning the mixed by 3 games and the day overall by 23 games. Good luck to both teams in their finals campaigns!
