Pyramid Hill Lions Club

The Lions club would like to thank previous and present stall holders for their support at the market over the last 12 years. Unfortu-nately, due to lack of community support, we feel the market is no longer viable, so there will no longer be a Lions market held after December, 2017.

The next market will be on Saturday, 9th September, followed by Saturday, 11th November and Saturday, 9th December, which will be the last one ever.

Our local Lions have gold centenary cake tins out at the moment—cost $22.

Available from Bendigo Bank, Purple Rain, Newsagency and Victoria Hotel.

Lions are still collecting batteries, glasses and furniture - please ring:

Tania—0448 557 528, Bill—0427 888 102

Colleen—0478 635 953

All funds raised by Lions goes back to local organisations at the end of each Lion

financial year. The glasses collected, are refurbished and sent to third world

countries.

Remembering Eileen Green

We were sorry to hear that Eileen Green recently died at the Pyramid Hill Hostel.

Eileen, known to many as “Grassy”, worked with Alan Brooks, known as “Brooksy” in Alan Brooks Agricultural Supplies right from the start. She was there when it first started as a small business in the old barber’s shop on the side of the milk-bar, right through to moving down to the old State Savings Bank and the expansion to “Tom’s” shed. When my father, Alan Brooks, died in 2005 Eileen was the first person I called. Eileen and Brooksy had an amazing understanding of the rhythms, the seasons, the changing needs of the farmers and life in general. They both loved the shop, they loved their farmers and they loved their bowls. Their time at the shop was skilfully negotiated around their bowls commitments.

Eileen was a valued member of the bowling club and she enthusiastically encouraged and taught many people to play bowls, including two of our friends who have gone on to be club presidents and state finalists in their own club. After Brooksy died, Eileen stayed on for nearly 2 years and steered us through some difficult times. Not only had my father died, but we were in the middle of the worst drought on record. In the next 2 years, before we sold to Neville Miller, Eileen guided us, taught us and protected us. She was often short on words but always astute and precise in her assessment.

Eileen had the best seat in town. From her desk she could see anyone coming in or out of town. She knew everyone and every-thing. Eileen was fiercely proud of her family and her farmers. She had the best seat in town and we hope she still does.

These awards recognise the outstanding contribution to the local community during 2017 or noteworthy service to the community over a number of years. An award is given for each ward (Boort, Inglewood, Tarnagulla, Terrick and Wedderburn).

“Road to Nhill” Update

Thank you very much to the Pyramid Hill Historical Society for compiling and putting up the Road to Nhill displays in the Store window and Miller's Ag window. Both displays are very eye catching, look fabulous and are of great interest to locals and visitors alike. Thank you for digging into your extensive archives and taking the time to help promote the movie.

We had a great idea from a local community member to raffle 2 family passes to the movie. You can buy a raffle ticket at either Pyramid Hill News and Post or Miller's Ag Supplies for $2 a ticket. Thank you very much to these two businesses for having the raffle gear and tin on your shop counters. The raffle will be drawn on Friday September 8th by the Pyramid Hill Memorial Hall Commit-tee of Management. Be in it to win it!

Pyramid Hill Football

Finals are here and what a great way to start with the U/18's and Reserves both winning their respective games. Although recording a convincing win the U/18's must remain focused as Inglewood were severely under manned, playing with only 14 players, and the competition will only get tougher as you progress deeper into finals. Great to see some Senior footballers there over the weekend in support of both teams and thank you to the Senior boys who did water for both the Saturday and Sunday games, it is very encouraging for these teams to see you being involved in their games.

Under 18s

Finals time, what we have been looking forward to all season. We came up against Inglewood out at Mitiamo and the boys were keen to stamp their authority early. We started with the breeze and won plenty of contested ball in the middle, giving our forwards first use and we took a 34 point buffer into quarter time. We continued our dominance in the middle of the ground and the margin increased at each break. James Vlaeminck found himself on the end of many passages of play as he kicked 6 goals and our midfield brigade where outstanding for the entirety of the match. The final margin was 132 points as we now prepare for a big Semi Final showdown against the Maiden Gully YCW Eagles. Final Scores: Pyramid Hill 22.14.146 defeated Inglewood 2.2.14

Goals: J. Vlaeminck 6, X. Ryan 4, E. Caburnay 3, B. Pickersgill 3, B. Goodwin 2, M. Gunther 2, S. Gunther 1, D. Mitchell 1. Victoria Hotel Award: Steven Gunther. Brad Peters Award: James Vlaeminck. Brett Hercus Transport Award: Jimmy Ryan. Others: Ed Caburnay, Rys Attard.

Millers Ag Award: Bailey Goodwin. Pyramid Bakery Cafe Award: Xav Ryan. Special Award: Jake Hilson.

Reserves

It was the first final the boys have been in for a few years and " boy oh boy, wow wee" were the boys up for the contest. With Paddy "the smooth operator" Monaghan and Scott "the betterman" Mann dominating in the centre with bulk clearances. Matt "chicken little" Scott, was kicking well with three straight, and it was a solid defensive effort by Jim "the don" Ritchie and Dylan "Fred Flintstone" Holden. Dylan "courageous captain" Tonkin, was dominant across half back and Mitchell "the parcel" Stewart was a running machine. Troy "the package" Woolhouse, was all class and how he didn't make the AFL baffles me. Mitch "one inch" Dingwall was a goal kicking machine. It is going to be a massive week on the track as we prepare for Mitamo this Sunday. Up the doggies, woof woof!

Final Scores: Pyramid Hill 9.5.59 defeated Inglewood 3.10.28

Goals: D. Mann 2, M. Scott 2, M. Dingwall 2, S. Chamberlain 1, P. Monaghan 1, J. Woodward 1.

Egan Taylor Award: Paddy Mona-ghan. Pony Award: Mitch Dingwall. National Hotel Award: Scott Mann. Others: Dylan Tonkin, Dylan Holden, Dave Mann, Matt Moon, Troy Woolhouse.

We now enter the second week of finals which see our U/18's play at Newbridge on Saturday against Maiden Gully/YCW and our Reserves at Bridgewater on Sunday against Mitiamo. This is not the time for either side to take the foot off the pedal and both games will require our best football to be on display to get the desired results. Good luck to both teams.

Until next week.........Go Doggies.

Pyramid Hill Netball Finals—Week 1

12th & 13th August 2017

A GRADE – Qualifying Final Pyramid Hill v Newbridge

In the first quarter, Newbridge came out strongly. Their tall strong defenders created a physical battle making it a challenge in attack. The second quarter was a much more even contest with the girls digging deep to keep themselves in the game. Abbey and Kate worked hard in defence to create some turnovers. The mid court worked hard at bringing the ball into our goalers who worked tirelessly. In the 3rd quarter, Newbridge extended their lead to 9 at 3 quarter time. Pyramid had given themselves plenty of work to do in the last but went down to a better side on the day. Newbridge 49 d. Pyramid Hill 33

Best - Kate Burton

B GRADE – Elimination Final Pyramid Hill v Mitiamo

We knew it would be a competitive game against Mitiamo and it was. The first quarter saw accurate goaling from Megan and Amber despite strong defensive pressure from the Mitiamo defence. Scores were level going into the first break. Conditions heated up in the 19 degree weather, with Hayley and Casey rebound-ing strongly throughout the game, creating more opportunities for the Pyramid Hill goalers. At half time we were down by 1. Mitiamo continued to make changes trying to improve their attack but Tania, Loz and Chelsea made it difficult for them. The third quarter saw Pyramid take the lead after some great intercepts and controlled play into goals although Mitiamo responded to be again even at the break! Both crowds were on the edge of their seats as Pyramid Hill settled and ran out eventual winners by 3! Pyramid Hill 38 d. Mitiamo 35

Best – Megan Gunther 15 & UNDER – Elimination Final Pyramid Hill v Inglewood

The sun was shining as the girls prepared themselves for their very first final. After a very inspirational speech from their coach the girls stepped on court with a few nerves and butterflies, but were able to control the game from the very first whistle. Every team member gave 110% and their hard work and superb coaching from Karlee and Abbey really showed this week. It was an absolute pleasure to watch each and every girl play the best netball they have ever played. Congratulations girls and keep up the great work. Best luck next week against Calivil in the 1st Semi-Final. Pyramid Hill 63 d. Inglewood 23

Best – Amy Murfitt

Another former local returning for a hit Tony Pearson and partner Andrew Zanker from Manangatang won A grade with 46 points on a C/b from regular Melbourne visitors Pat McKay & Paul Mitchell. Another former member in Steve Delikatzis rounded up a more than useful partner in Grant Mooney for the Non-handicap trophy; a score of 39 points good enough to win on a C/b from new golfers Peter Gargan and Dave Mann.

A total of 10 novelty events gave golfers a chance to claim a prize regularly during their round. NTP 2nd Pat McKay at 93 cm, this proved to close enough to be NTP over tournament with Pat returning to Melbourne with an Engel fridge kindly donated by Landmark Echuca. NTP 10th R Clark NTP 12th Dean Marshall NTP 16th David Campbell from Neangar Park. 2nd shot NTP on 3rd Brendan James, 9th Brad Duncan and 18th Gerry Carmody showing he hasn’t lost any of his flair from yester year. Long Drives A-grade Sean Gallagher B-Grade Brendan James and over 65’s David Campbell. A field of 42 golfers fronted up on Saturday morning for the 27-hole stroke play event also incorporating the WH Schmidt perpetual trophy, with some having celebrated a little too hard the previous evening, but none the less keen to take on the wind and the intricacies that form part of our unique course. Regular visitor from Melbourne Michael Morris claimed the honours for the W.H. Schmidt trophy with a very tidy 5 over par score of 110 for the 27 holes. B Grade 27 scratch went to Barry Meighan from Calivil with a score of128; a seasoned campaigner around the “Hill” with years of knowledge of the tricky winds. 27-hole Net events were won by locals Steve Gibson in A grade with 101.5 and our newest member Gav Kerr winning B grade with 98. Gav also took home the coveted Souflott cup which is sure to take pride of place on the mantle piece for 12 months.

Other winners were Grant Mooney (A grade) and P Kuiper (B grade) 18-hole scratch. Ted Carmody (A) and Ray Bruce (B) 18 Net, while 9-hole winners went too Ian Hubble, Andy Freemantle, Steve Amos and old man Jim Hoban.

The Murray Williamson 2nd shot on hole 6 Aaron Morris, NTP 2 S Robinson, 12 Jim Hoban, 16 Aaron Morris, 2nd shot 18 Rob Daniel. Longest drive A grade Aaron Morris, B grade Sean Slater and teams event winners A Freemantle, S Gibson, B Meighan, F Schmidt.

Sunday’s Jan Burke Memorial event a 3-person Ambrose event had 26 teams competing. A relaxing day in glorious sunshine was enjoyed by all which included a strong contingent from Kerang and several representa-tives from Cohuna. The eventual mixed winners who earned the right for their names to be added to the highly sought-after trophy was: Scratch winners Glen Bartels, Kate Bartels & Andrew Whatley with 65 and Net winners all out of the same coaching stable Adam Twigg, Meg Stewart & Adam Gould. Other events Men’s Scratch from Kerang Chris Waterson, Tony Hall & Don Ross with a fine 64. Men’s Handicap also from Kerang Shane Dibsdale, Ash Meehan and Peter Morris with 66-8-

58. Non-Handicap winners from Cohuna Dave McNamara, Wayne Dye and Wayne Miller with 67. NTP ladies 2 Georgina Amos, 12 Ros Dunne 16 Katrina McNaughton. NTP 2nd shot 3rd Aaron Morris 18th Tony Hall.

An event of this size does not happen without significant input from members, people who put the club before themselves are why tourna-ments such as this continue to be successful and of course the businesses who sponsor with goods or cash. A full sponsors list will be in next week’s press but a special mention to Echuca used Cars, Palmody Bus Lines, Advance Survey and Design, Ladson Excavation’s, Loddon Shire, Victoria Hotel, BLJ Building, Kerang Carpet Court and MVP feeds

2017 Annual Golf

Tournament a Huge

Success

The 2017 Pyramid Hill golf club’s annual tournament has been hailed a huge success with a total of 288 entries over the 4 days of play. This was an increase of 15 % on the previous year and is just reward for the hard work of local members in preparing the course and organising such a marvellous event. The Ladies 4BBB was played in rather cool conditions on Thursday with a total of 26 pair enjoying a course that was presented in tip top condition. Local girl Georgina Amos & partner Christine Kithu carded the day high score of 43 points to claim the A grade trophy. Runners up on 40 points were Sue Thompson & Gayle Gray. In the B Grade Trish Bamford and Sherryn Pedersen from Elmore claimed the honours with a score of 42 points from Runners up also from Elmore Joy Rasmussen & Lorna Wilson. NTP on hole 2- Nola Henning, hole 12 Di Walker, hole 16 Lorna Wilson at 160 cm which would prove to be unbeatable over the tournament, while Noelene Ralphs from Calivil made certain of the straightest drive with her Tee shot coming to rest on the string.

56 Men’s pairs assembled on Friday for the J.A Stewart memorial event. As is the tradition the day had a strong representation from former locals, but it was local members the two L’s Life member Jim Hoban and Larger than life Tony Mullins holding up the shield at days end with a score of 47 points, also claiming B grade honours as well. They won on a countback from defending champions Graham Ballis & Wesley Moon, Graham’s lack of match fitness proving decisive with Wesley carrying the load over the final few holes.
