Drama Workshops

This week our Year 8 Drama class participated in a two day workshop as part of the Fairfax Festival program. The goal of this workshop was to develop students’ drama skills and begin the development of a unique performance. The program will continue throughout the term at school, rehearsals and further workshops will be held from September 16 -18 in Swan Hill with final performances on September 19 as part of the Young Entertainers in The Street Festival.

New Furniture and Equipment

Parents Association is in the process of organising new play equipment for the playground. A sandpit play wheel as well as a moving pirate ship will make their appearance in the primary play area in the coming weeks and a large sized chess set is planned for the senior area of the grounds. New furniture has also arrived for the Music Room – the brightly coloured tables will enable the instrumental music practice areas to be set up.

Year 9 Community

Our Year 9 students participate in a community based program this semester. The purpose of this program is to encourage the development of practical and life skills while contributing to our local community. Groups of students identify and plan projects across a number of areas. A group I met with this morning is planning to develop an area of the grounds between the Community Centre and the Administration block. A range of other activities are also taking place around the town.

Dropping Students at School

As mentioned in previous newsletters, College Council is working closely with the Mildura Shire to establish a Traffic Management Plan for the school. We have noticed that over time the traffic flow has settled down as parents and students become familiar with the layout. We

do ask parents not to drop students off at the front of the Community Centre as this is

presently the bus drop off and pick up zone. Very shortly signage and markings along with defined footpath areas will be installed which will make the traffic process clearer. In the meantime I thank everyone for their cooperation in keeping our students safe.

Internet Safety

Our VET Information Technology students have been engaged in researching and presenting information relating to the safe use of technology. Attached to this newsletter is a brochure developed by a Year 11 student regarding the safe use of the Internet.

College Council

At the July meeting of council it was decided to trial an earlier start for Presentation Night for 2014. This year the start time will move to 7.30pm instead of 8.00pm. Council also approved a range of school policy updates to ensure that these reflect the cur-rent guidelines. All our school policies are available on the school website.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is provided by the Victorian Government to help with education-related costs. If you have a child under 16, and you hold a valid Health Care Card, Pension Card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible to receive the EMA. The allowance is paid in two instalments, one in March and one in August. A pro-rata amount is payable for students turning 16 in 2014. The payment is intended to as-sist with education -related costs such as uniforms, excur-sions, textbooks, and station-ery. To apply for Semester II, please contact the school office to complete an EMA application form before July 31st 2014. Please note: If you applied in Semester I, and your card is still current, you do not need to reapply, your application will carry over to Semester II.

Page 2 YEAR 10 CANBERRA CAMP

Last week, many of the Year 10 students visited the nation’s capital – Canberra. They were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognizes the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Below are some comments from the students, along with some photos. One of my favourite moments of the trip was the visit to the Australi-

an War Memorial. Watching the soldiers during the ceremony was

definitely a great experience. Josh Brauer

I liked the National Film and Sound Archive because it’s where all

Australian movies, sound and radio history is kept. I liked seeking

the film of the original Ned Kelly shooting scene. I also liked the

National Library of Australia and going to the basement where all the

books were stored on the movable shelves. Gabby Torpey

My favourite parts of the camp were ice skating and Questa-

con because they were the most active events during the

I enjoyed visiting Parliament House, although we didn’t get

to see the politicians in action. The War Memorial was my

favourite experience because it was truly beautiful. Ice skat-

ing was a fun finish after a busy week. Bethany Burns

The Australian War Memorial was the best activity on camp because

we got to learn a lot more about the war and see some of the aircraft

and submarines that were used. Kyle Sporn The War Memorial was breathtaking. It is one of the best

tributes to the soldiers involved in the war that could possi-

bly have been created. The stories of the soldiers that we

were told were unbelievable. Hannah John Ice skating was the best part but camp was fun overall. Brody Morrish

morial and watching the service and seeing the beautiful

VCAL NEWS:

NEW CANTEEN OPEN

Last week the new Ouyen P-12 College canteen was re-opened and ready for business. The cafeteria is now run by the Mallee Bakery five days a week. There is a wide range of food that can be purchased; choices

are all healthy foods, which includes yoghurt lollies. Canteen products are preferred “Green” food endorsed by the Educa-tion Department. There is a general menu for the basic food that you are able to order for lunch time; also every day is a

special order day eg: Friday pie day. There is now room for students to sit down and eat lunch in the warm cafeteria. Kira Bramfit

LALs - Knitting Program:

As part of LALS we will be participating in the Wool in Schools program later this term. If anyone has any 8 ply balls of wool or 4mm knitting needles they would like to donate, we would be extremely grateful. The finished project will be a blanket made of squares (hopefully more than one!), to be donated to a charity.

VCE News:

It was great to have past students, Thomas Elliott, Lynden Burn, Laura Gloster, Kate O’Connor and Laura Down, attend the College last Fri-day to talk to our current Year 12s about their university experiences. The past students all completed Year 12 last year and attend a variety of Universities both in Victorian and South Australia. They shared information and provided an interesting insight into the courses they are completing, the universities they attend and their accommodation. The session was very informative and I thank Thomas, Lynden, Laura, Kate and Laura for giving up their time.

KNITTING:

The Year Five students have been lucky enough to start knitting this term with the CWA ladies and family members who have joined in. It is a great program that links the school with the community and also gives students that opportunity to learn the art of knitting (we are get-ting good already!!).

We are creating squares for a blanket that we will stitch together and donate to a charity at the end of the term. If any one wants to knit a square to donate it would be more then welcome.

The Year 9 Health Day was sponsored by Cheryl Linklater and Carmen McLean Branch Managers from Ouyen NAB. Cheryl and Carmen had a quick chat about the banking business and the careers available within the finance sector, also letting students know how to do their own banking from now and into the future. As a thank you the NAB supplied each student with a $20 gift voucher to be redeemed by coming into the Ouyen branch. Please remember other family members can make use of this voucher.

MODEL

Federation University Australia (FedUni) is dedicated to in-creasing the participation of students from regional and rural areas in higher education. To support this aim, we are pleased to announce our new Open Access Selection Model which will replace the Regional Education Entry Program (REEP) in 2015. For current Year 12 students this means their ATAR is not a factor in our decision to offer them a place, provided they have met the prerequisites of their chosen program of study. From the student’s perspective, this means:

• More opportunities to access Higher Education

• Offers based on individual study scores rather than ATAR

SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDY NUCLEAR MEDICINE AT RMIT

Up to five scholarships per year will be awarded to Victorian students with an ATAR > 85 who enter nuclear medicine at RMIT immediately after Year 12. Value : $10,000 over three years. The RMIT Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations) Nuclear Medicine is a three year program of study which in-cludes clinical placements. It requires a one year internship after graduation. Congratulations to the 5 students who trav-elled to Melbourne last Wednesday to com-pete in the Girls 14 Year Old Race at the 2014 SSV State Cross Country Champion-ships.

They are among an elite few who reached this level of competition. All students repre-sented the school admirably and showed great sportsmanship. The race had 90 run-ners.

The weather was cold and windy with rain threatening on the hill at Bundoora as our students prepared to tackle the very long slope that makes up the first third of the course. We were very lucky to complete the race before the rain and hail storm hit.

A big thank you to parents Marie O’Connor, Amanda Hayter, Sally Renkin, Darren Latta and Jackie-Lee Fawcett who travelled to Melbourne to support our students.

Well done to the girls who were the fourth placed team last Thursday, with most im-proving the times they achieved last year. The official placings are as follows-

cost of travel is $10 and must be paid by Monday, July

28th to the General Office. The medical permission

form must also be returned by this date. At the discre-

tion of the Sports Coordinator any student who has not

paid or brought back their form by this time may be

asked to remain at school. The teams have been selected

and are found on the Noticeboards around the school.

Students have been given a note with all information

about the day and this was also published in last week’s

newsletter.

If your name is not on a list or if you have any queries

or problems, please see Mrs. Lonergan on Monday.

training.

Students wishing to practice on their athletics

events may attend lunchtime training on - Mon-

day, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
