In Sweden, among a range of other countries, we see an increasing amount of people that are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, often as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle. Detecting diabetes in a early stage is critical to avoid serious health problems for the individual. Our aim in this project was to get people to test themselves for diabetes in an easy way, increasing awareness of the disease, and hopefully discovering if they have diabetes in an early stage.
The diabetes test we designed is made for one-time use, in the home, and without the need of assistance from a nurse. We worked thoroughly with form and semantics to make the testing experience as friendly and acceptable as possible.
A potential scenario for distribution is that these kits are provided for free by the government to workplaces, targeted to the adult part of the population. For this reason the test kit is designed to be producted at a very low cost.
In our search for a suitable form and interaction workflow, a range of test models were made and evaluated by people outside the project.
Different ways of visualizing the test results were explored, to communicate properly if blood glucose levels are normal, or high.
The final proposal for the test device. It has a needle for pricking your finger, a test strip where a small drop of blood is applied, and an indicator that shows if the glucose level is above normal.

Overview of the test kit with all the content in place. A second test device is included to be shared with a family member, or be used if the first try failed.
