DIABETES: SCREENING TOOL FOR INSPECTION OF GUMS AND TEETH Visual inspection of a person’s gums and teeth for early signs of periodontal disease at diagnosis, and then at each focused visit can assist with early detection and treatment. The accompanying diagrams may be helpful for understanding the evaluation criteria and the presence of periodontal disease. Assign a score based on current findings. Refer to a dentist for further evaluation if score is 4 or more. More than 6 months since last dental visit 4 Red, sore, swollen, or bleeding gums 4 Loose, sensitive teeth, and/or separated teeth 4 Visible debris or accumulation of hardened material around teeth 3 Exposed roots in the mouth 2 Strong odor in the mouth 1 Smoking or smokeless tobacco use 1 TOTAL SCORE
