Demonstration Test Sessions

This Directions for Administration manual is designed to assist teachers and test proctors while they administer the Levels 1 and 2 Demonstration of the CTP Online test. The demonstration test takes approximately 30-40 minutes to administer, depending on the number of questions students ask. Before you begin, be sure that you have allowed enough time to complete the test in one session if possible.

Running the System Check Prior to launching the demonstration test, it is important that you perform a system check. To perform the system check, go to http://ctponline.erblearn.org click on the System Check link, and follow the instructions provided.

If you have any questions, please call 1-866-881-2802.

Preparing for the Demonstration Test

It is important for the teacher who is administering the demonstration test to read ALL of the directions in this manual carefully a few days before test administration to students.

The information for each section of the demonstration test is presented in three parts:

• Instructions that explain each part of the test and are meant only for the teacher or proctor are provided under the heading “Instructions for Teachers.”

• Instructions that should be read to students are shown under the heading “Instructions

for Students” and appear in blue shaded boxes and in a different font style so they are easily identifiable.

• Images of the screens are provided to assist in the demonstration and instruction. The function of the features on each screen is also described at the end of the instructions in a table labeled “Screen Features.”

A table on the next page shows the equipment necessary to administer the demonstration test and should prepare for prior to test administration day.

Items Needed for the Demonstration Test

Equipment

• Computer for the test administrator to begin and monitor the

demonstration test session.

• Computer for each student. System requirements are provided in the FAQ online at http//ctponline.erblearn.org.

• Headphones for each student. It is recommended that you obtain headphones at least one week before testing so you can verify they operate correctly before testing begins.

• Telephone in the testing room (either land line or mobile) in case you

need to call for technical assistance; it is also recommended that you notify your school’s IT department of the date/time your class will be testing so that technical support is available in the event of a local system issue.

Instructions for Students

Say: Today, you will take a demonstration test. This test is for practice only. Later, you will be taking tests that are like this one. If you practice listening to and answering these questions carefully, you will know what to expect when you take the test later on.

Once we start the test, if you need to stop and leave the computer, please raise your hand and I will help you.

To answer the questions, you have to listen very carefully to the directions. Some questions may be easy. Some may be hard. Don't worry if some questions seem hard. No one is expected to know all the answers to all of the questions. Just try to answer every question.

Right now you should see the Introduction Screen on your computer. It shows two OK buttons. Does everyone see the two OK buttons?

Make sure all students are on the Introduction Screen. Then read the following:

Say: We are now going to start the test. You should click on the bottom OK button to begin the demonstration test. We will start by reviewing the tutorial. Does everyone know what a tutorial is? The tutorial is a lesson that will help you learn how to use the buttons to move through the test. Are there any questions so far? [Pause.] Answer students’ questions as needed. Then read the instructions for students under the sample Welcome screen that follows.

The Tutorial

An online tutorial specific to the tests the students will take is available at the beginning of the live administration of each of the Levels 1 and 2 tests. The tutorial in the demonstration is not specific to any Level 1 or 2 test. Instead it includes all of the tutorial instructions that could be included on any of the test-specific tutorials students might see so that you and your students will be familiar with them prior to live test administration.

Note that students who are taking a test that requires the use of headphones to listen to audio instructions and/or test questions are required to take the online tutorial just prior to each test. The tests that require headphones are Levels 1 and 2 Word Analysis and Mathematics; and Level 2 Writing Mechanics. This gives the students an opportunity to practice using headphones to listen to instructions, practice adjusting the volume using an on-screen volume control bar, and practice using the audio Replay feature.

Finding Your Way Around Screen

Instructions for Teachers The first screen in the tutorial is labeled Finding Your Way Around and highlights the information seen on the screen during the test: Student name, Test Name, Current Question Number and Total Number of Questions, as well as the function of the Next and Back buttons.

Instructions for Students

Say: You should see a screen called “Finding Your Way Around.” We will take a few minutes to review the tutorial together. Once you have read through the tutorial, you can practice answering questions that are like the questions on the actual test. Please follow along as I read aloud. Make sure all students have been able to successfully navigate to the correct screen, “Finding Your Way Around.” Answer student questions as needed. Then read the following: Say: During the test you will find your name, the test name, the current question number and the total number of questions on the test at the top of the screen. At the bottom of the screen you will find two buttons that will help you move through your test. The “Next” button moves you to the next page of the test. You used this button earlier to reach this page. The “Back” button appears on tests where you are allowed to return to a question you have already seen. On some tests the “Back” button will not be available. Are there any questions about how to use these buttons? [[Pause.] Answer student questions as needed.

Scrolling Screen Instructions for Teachers

Students will now come to the page labeled Scrolling. This is another example of a split screen. On the left side are instructions on how to use the scroll bars at the bottom and on the right. This gives users the opportunity to practice moving the horizontal and vertical scroll bars with the mouse so they are prepared for longer texts that may not always be fully visible on the screen. While students at Levels 1 and 2 are unlikely to be tested using a reading passage long enough to require scrolling, the tutorial will help them become familiar with this function for testing in later grades.

A second sample question is also provided on the right side of the screen for additional hands-on practice answering questions using a mouse.

Auditory Comprehension/Listening Test Instructions for Teachers

This section of the demonstration test presents items to assess auditory comprehension (or listening). Because the test evaluates auditory understanding, all instructions, stories, and questions must be read aloud to the students. The test is untimed, so those administering the test should move on to the next question when it appears that every student has had a chance to respond.

The verbatim directions to be read aloud in administering the Auditory Comprehension/ Listening demonstration test follow the screen shots.

Instructions for Students

Say: This is the end of the tutorial. Click the “Next” button at the bottom of your screen. You will see a screen that reads: “Auditory Comprehension.” This is the Listening Test. We will answer one sample question together, and then you will answer two questions on your own for practice. I will read all of the stories and each question to you out loud. You must listen carefully, because the answers to the questions are found in the stories or passages that I will read. None of the questions will be shown on the computer screen. The answer choices will be on the screen. I will also read them to you.

I will read the story or passage, the questions, and the answer choices only once. When I finish reading a question and the answer choices, you will have a few moments to click on the circle next to the answer you choose using your mouse. To change your answer, click on the circle next to a different answer just like you practiced on the tutorial.

Listen carefully to all of the choices and carefully click on the circle next to the answer you choose. Remember this is just for practice. Are there any questions?

Answer any questions. When you read the stories or passages and questions, be sure to emphasize any words or phrases that are underlined. Be careful not to give undue emphasis to any answer choice as you read it aloud. Provide as much help as the students need to understand the instructions and sample questions without assisting with information to answer test questions. While some younger students may volunteer answers, you should discourage them from responding to questions aloud. If a student seems unable to answer a question, advise him or her to skip that question and move on to the next one. Sample Question A is presented next. Say: Click the “Next” button again to see Sample Question A. I will read a story to you, and then I will read a sample question. After I read the question, I will read each of the answer choices to you. You should click on the circle under the word or picture that is the correct answer. Listen carefully as I read a story about Sasha.

Read Aloud: Mornings can sometimes be nice. When Sasha wakes up in the morning, he finds it hard to open his eyes. Not because he’s still tired — although he usually does feel sleepy — but because the light in his room is very bright and hurts his eyes at first. While Sasha waits to get used to the light, he listens to the soft, crisp chirping of the birds by his window and thinks about what clothing he’ll find for school. The morning has become a welcome quiet time. Look at Sample Question A, and click on the answer after I read the question. According to the story, which picture shows what Sasha hears when he wakes up? Click on the circle under your answer. [Pause to let students select an answer]. You should have clicked on the circle under the picture of the bird because the story says Sasha listens to the soft, crisp chirping of the birds when he wakes up.

Two Listening Test items are presented next. Say: Now click the “Next” button to see questions 1 and 2. I will read a story to you, and then I will ask you questions. I will read each story only once. Answer the question by clicking on the circle under the answer that you think is correct. Now find question number 1. Listen carefully while I read these directions the teacher gave to the class. You will answer two questions.

Reading Comprehension Test Instructions for Teachers Items that measure reading comprehension are presented next in the demonstration test. When students are taking the live test for Levels 1 and 2 Reading Comprehension, they will have the opportunity to review their answers before the end using the Review Screen function (see inset).

The Review Screen allows students to review all questions in each of the two sections of the test before leaving that section. This is the only test at Levels 1 and 2 that provides for this review. To reduce confusion, the Review Screen function is not included in the demonstration test. However, students are introduced to this functionality and can become familiar with the buttons used on the Review Screen as part of the tutorial presented before the Reading Comprehension test.

The Summary Report Screen

Instructions for Teachers On this screen, students are shown a summary report of the answers they chose on the demonstration test. Note that this function is not available during a live test. It is only included here to give students additional practice navigating the site and becoming familiar with the buttons and features used. Students can review all questions and their correct answers, or look at just one selected question. Because this is a demonstration test you should not be concerned with the number of correct answers your students chose. Instead, it is important that they appear comfortable using the mouse and moving around the site so they are confident on test day that they will not have to learn how to navigate the test.

Instructions for Students Have students remove their headsets and then read the following: Say: Does everyone see the Summary Report that has questions numbers in a chart? If you do not see this screen, raise your hand and I will help you. Help students to get to the Summary Report screen and then read the following: Say: Now we are going to review the answers you chose for the questions you completed on your own. We will also be able to see the correct answers to all of the questions. In the summary report shows the questions you answered correctly have a check mark in the middle column next to the question number. The questions that you answered incorrectly have an “x” in the middle column. In the right column, the correct answer to each question is shown. You can click on any question number to go to right to that question. The correct answer is highlighted in yellow so you can easily find it. You will also see either a check mark or an “x” just like the summary report to show you if you answered the question correctly or not. There is a button on the bottom left side of the screen that reads “Review All.” This button will move you back to the very first question so you can review all of the questions. After you move to the first question, you can click on the “Next” button to review more questions and answers, or you can click on the “S” button on the bottom left to go back to the Summary Report. Now we will review some of the questions on the demonstration test. Do you have any questions about the summary report before we begin? [Pause.] Answer any questions from students. Depending on the time remaining in the period allotted for the demonstration test, you can have the entire class review all of the questions or only some of the questions together. At the conclusion of the review, have the students end the test: Say: We are finished with the demonstration test. You should see an “End” button at the bottom right side of the screen. Does everyone see this button? Click on the “End” button to close the test.
