Port Moresby is the capital city of
Papua New Guinea and the desti-
nation port of the 2017 DHL
Coral Sea Rally hosted by the
Royal Papua Yacht Club.
Papua New Guinea has more than
600 islands and is home to more
than seven million people.
The currency is Papua New Guin-
ea Kina (kee-nah), divided into
100 toea (toy-ah) and is named
after the traditional shell money.
Most Australian EFTPOS cards
are accepted in local ATMs and
banks will also exchange AUD or
USD readily.
In Port Moresby English is spo-
ken everywhere, as is Tok Pisin
or Pidgin.
Port Moresby has two seasons,
the wet and the dry. The dry
brings consistent
south easterlies
and offers great
sailing. This sea-
son runs from May
to November and
coincides with the
rally.
Temperatures
range from 26o to
28o, and water
temperatures about
the same.
The country operates on Western
Pacific Standard Time (GMT
+10:00).
Melanesians are modest by nature
and dress, particularly for women
should be conservative.
Electricity is 240 volt, plug pin

The RPYC or “Yachtie” is offer-
ing complimentary berthage or
mooring within the marina for
one week.
The Yachtie has a range of facili-
ties including a café, restaurant
and bar meals. The open air deck
overlooks the Harbour and is a
top spot for sundowners with a
SP—the local brew.
The club operates a radio service
on VHF84—call Papa Yankee
Charlie between 0800 and 2000
hours. The club can also monitor
vessels via AIS, and has a rescue
vessel for local assistance.
Free wi-fi is available, there is a
token operated laundry; shower
facilities and a gymnasium. The
RPYC also has a running and
fitness track within the grounds.
There is a self serve floating fuel
dock within the marina where
clean petrol and diesel can be
obtained by using a pre purchased
fuel card.

There are plenty of activities
for Rally participants to enjoy.
A welcome BBQ and cultural
SingSing will be held on
Wednesday 27th September in
the garden bar. This will be a
great opportunity to experience
PNG culture, as well as share a
sailing tale or two with partici-
pants and local sailors.
PNG Tourism has organized a local
tour. This is a top opportunity to see
local sights including wildlife in-
cluding the amazing Bird of Para-
dise, as well as other cultural and
historical sites.
An in-shore sailing event will
be held on Sunday 1st October.
All participating rally vessels
receive fuel vouchers sponsored
by Puma Energy. The event
commences from the wet bar at
10.30am.
POMSAC, the RPYC dive club
can organize a snorkeling trip
for interested sailors. Dive trips
can also be organized for keen
divers.
There are restaurants and bars
within club grounds and also a short walk from the club. These offer
lazy breakfasts, lunches and dinner options.
The RPYC will run a shuttle service to the local grocery store. Two
major groceries stores are a short walk from the club also.
The Customs and Immigration forms (Small Craft Pre-arrival, Crew Effects Declaration, Cruise Ships
and Charters Electronic Manifest v2.0, Small Craft and Crew Passenger List) will need to be sent
to [email protected] before Sept 15th so we can submit them to the respective authorities
to obtain free entry or the relevant authorities will be contacted upon your arrival and they will process
each boat individually in the quarantine area. Standard fees apply.
Health quarantine and NAQIA documents can also be sent to us for submission however boats can fill
these out on arrival if they wish.
Important note: boats will also need to bring hard copies of their:
• Ships registration
• Passports
• Crew list
• Last port clearance

Customs, Immigration and Quarantine
Activities
Registration and payment details close September 15th and are available on the RPYC web site, this is to
allow time for submission of Customs, Immigration and quarantine documents.
The DHL Coral Sea Rally is open to sailing mono hulled and multi hulled vessels with a minimum LOA of
30 ft (9 m). The maximum LOA of multihulls is 60 ft (18.29 m) and 70 ft (21.5m) for mono hulled yachts.
The entries must be well found cruising boats fitted with permanent accommodation, navigation station,
galley and toilet facilities. They must carry all necessary navigational equipment for offshore sailing.

The Coral Sea rally cements a long partnership between the Royal Papua
Yacht Club, Cairns Yacht Club and Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron. The
Rally is a reminder of the Coral Sea Classic last raced in 2002.
Event Details
Hand sanitizers and good hand washing is
recommended for visitors.
Eating out is common and very affordable
compared to Australia. Food hygiene stand-
ards are high.
While a remote country, the capital of Port
Moresby has a number of health care provid-
ers and pharmacies.
Travel and health insurance is recommended
for rally participants as treatment can be
costly.
Malaria incidence in Port Moresby is ex-
tremely low and regular precautions are
recommended. Carry repellant and apply at
dawn and dusk, as well when visiting grassy
areas during the day.
Drinking water is safe in Port Moresby. You
can also boil tap water if you prefer. In
rural areas boiled or bottled water is recom-
mended.
