• Delta has a long history of product and process innovation led by John White:

• Invented unitary construction of stages in telescopic cylinders

• Developed flapped wipers in telescopic cylinders

• Were the first manufacturers to utilise collet pins in hydraulic cylinders

• Developed a proprietary ceramic densifying hard chrome treatment, called Delta-C, that eliminates chrome porosity and micro-cracking by sealing the pores and fissures in the chrome and bonding with it to provide an extremely hard smooth surface that is a hundred times more corrosion resistant than typical OEM standards

• Designed and developed a self centering replaceable cushioning device for single stroke hydraulic cylinders that allows cushioning in one direction and free flow in the other

• Designed and installed the world’s first horizontal reciprocating in-solution chrome plating machine (pictured)

Clean Room

• 120 square metre (1,300 square feet) facility

• Department of Defence certified

• Use for the production of manifolds, directional valves and the assembly of smaller cylinders

• Used in the manufacture of products for defence and medical applications

• Used as a hydraulic engineering training facility for college students

Quality System

• Operating under the Delta Hydraulics Quality Management System (DeltaQMS) which achieved ISO9001:1994

• Department of Defence Accredited Supplier

• Currently updating the DeltaQMS Quality System based on 6 Sigma Lean Manufacturing principles and Caterpillar Production System (CPS) elements

• Many elements of Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) already exist at Delta, full adoption of the APQP framework will be implemented, in conjunction with the Thailand operations as part of the DeltaQMS update

• The updated DeltaQMS will incorporate Caterpillar Production Systems and an ongoing commitment to CPS

• Re-certification to ISO9001:2008 is expected by the end of 2015

Manufacturing Redundancy

• Delta’s Devonport manufacturing facility is spread over three buildings

• Each building has its own sub-station electricity supply

• Centreless Grinding, Skiving and Burnishing, Machining, and Chroming is duplicated across three buildings, meaning in the situation where a building suffers a disaster, manufacturing can be transferred to another building

• Delta’s Thailand facility also provides significant business continuity protection. 9,000 square metre (96,875 square feet) has cutting, machining, assembly, cleaning, painting and CMM testing capability

Page 11: Devonport, Tasmania, Australia Hydraulics Corporate Profile.pdf · • Customers range from small businesses though to global OEMs and large international industrial companies •

• Added a new Chief Operating Officer to the team

• Added an Ultrasonic Testing , Magnetic Particle Testing and Technician and Quality Supervisor to the team

• Added control, monitoring and measuring machines and devices

• Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

• Magnetic particle testing

• Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM)

• Improved testing and measuring procedures for chrome bath chemistry, furnace temperatures and torque calibration on the assembly line

• Is recruiting for an in-house metallurgist
