PREFACE
This is a short report for a project titled “Development of Malaysian Affordable CNC Machines for Education” accomplished by a Malaysian company, Akar Indah (AI) Engineering Sdn Bhd in partnership with Technology Park Malaysia (TPM) & SIEMENS. This report will focus on the conversion for a unit of conventional milling into a basic CNC-equipped milling machine
The project is accomplished with fund granted by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI)
2
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Objective To develop cost-effective & basic CNC milling machine for education using existing conventional milling machine
The original location of the machine - Kolej Vokasional Sungai Petani 1 Sungai Petani, Kedah
3
Technology Park Malaysia (TPM) as the host & its main partner for the project
SIEMENS became the technology partner that supplied the project’s main electrical control system

TRAINING
Training was conducted at Kolej Vokasional Sungai Petani 1Immediately after installation, important operation & safety guidelines were briefed & emphasized to the teaching staff & students there 11
TRAINING – TRIAL RUN
Hands-on / practical training were also given to the user
12
1) Immediate: Direct hands-on experience for student on actual fundamental of machine building work
2) Immediate: Cost saving for government / college by local retrofit of existing old conventional machine instead of acquiring new CNC machine for education purpose (rough estimation – at least 30% cost saving compared to new machine with similar capability)
3) Long term: A benchmark blueprint for machine tools building & to enhance the syllabus of the new Malaysian’s Vocational System & Curricular
OUTCOME
13
NEXT PHASE – CNC MACHINE VERSION 1.1
New features to be added
Automatic Tool Changer
Fully enclosed machine cover
Auto Clamp Spindle
*next phase is subjected to the approval of Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation 14
