Uranus In Taurus

More than 40 years ago, the Spanish director Luis Bunuel released a bizarre surrealist fi lm called “The Phantom of Liberty.” The opening scene was set during Napoleon’s invasion of Spain, and showed Spanish guerillas about to be executed. As an act of defi ance, there is a shout of “Long Live Chains!” The statement seems to be puzzling until the historical context is reviewed. The French troops had invaded Spain to “liberate” the people from the Catholic Church and from the Spanish royal family. The only problem was that the Spanish people did not want to be “liberated”, and they began guerilla warfare against the French with such ferocity that Napoleon regretted he ever heard of Spain. With Uranus about to move into Taurus, we may be facing a similar sort of “Long Live Chains” paradox. Uranus in Taurus has coincided with periods of the worst repression and loss of liberty that is usually not restored until Uranus moves into Gemini. What is particularly strange about it is that the attack on liberty is motivated by an illusory repression, a seemingly paranoid fantasy that someone is about to do harm, and therefore it is necessary to harm the other person fi rst. In this strange turn of events, it is necessary to destroy liberty in order to save it.

This pattern was seen in June, 1934, when Uranus last entered Taurus. At that time, the Nazi party was in control of Germany, but there was dissension in the ranks. Ernst Rohm, the leader of the Brown Shirts, wanted a stronger military role for the storm troopers. Adolf Hitler had to deal with the German General Staff, which did not want the Brown Shirt ruffi ans

in the Wermacht. Rohm started to make demands on Hitler. The response of Hitler was to massacre the leaders of the Brown Shirts, including Ernst Rohm, on June 30, 1934. The public was told that Rohm and the others were part of a conspiracy to overthrow the government, and only swift action by Hitler had saved the nation. For a while this canard was accepted, and there was a period of calm when Uranus went back into Aries. Since the

storm troopers had been responsible for the attacks on Jews, it was hope that the purge of storm troopers would signal an end to persecution. However, when Uranus went back into Taurus in March, 1935, new attacks against the Jews were started. The attacks were justifi ed for purifying the German nation, and to destroy the “Jewish conspiracy” that was dominating the country. start of the Holocaust in 1942, just before Uranus went into Gemini. Other nations experienced waves of repression based on illusory conspiracies. In Russia, Joseph Stalin had started the Great Purge, supposedly to wipe out infi ltration of the Communist party by agents of the exiled Leon Trotsky. In Brazil, President Getulio Vargas canceled elections because of a threatened “Jewish-Communist plot” to overthrow the government, which never appeared. In Spain, the perceived left-wing movement of the government prompted General Francisco Franco to lead a civil war that decimated the country. Moving further back in time, in 1851, Uranus had moved into Taurus just in time for a serial publication of a new novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin, or Life among the lowly.” It was the fi rst major American novel to deal with the issue of Slavery. Previously, discussions of Slavery were stifl ed in polite society with the attitude that “nice people did not talk about such things.” Even the U.S. Congress had a “gag rule” against debates on Slavery. Here was a woman writing about a restricted topic, and immediately Slavery became a much-talked about issue. While Uranus was in Taurus in the 1850’s, there was an increase in abolitionist activity in the Northern states. Many people were outraged that the Compromise of 1850 had allowed a Fugitive Slave Law, which permitted Federal agents to arrest slaves who had escaped to the North and transport them back to the South. Abolitionists responded with the “underground railroad”, which passed escaped slaves

from friendly house to friendly house until they were able to reach Canada. The predicament of slaves was made worse by the Dred Scott decision of 1857, which said that a black man had no rights a white man was bound to respond. Through the decade, the Southern slave owners made it sound like they were the persecuted ones, since their property was being taken away. The Southerners passed fearful stories that liberated slaves were going to lead a slave rebellion that would wipe out the white population. This fearful fantasy almost came to pass with John Brown’s raid on the arsenal at Harper’s Ferry in 1859. He became the model of a Northern terrorist trying to start a slave revolt. The election of Abraham Lincoln prompted slave states to leave the Union, even though Lincoln had no immediate plans for ending slavery, but his hands would be forced by events in the Civil War. Uranus in Taurus in the late 1760’s saw the arrival of British troops in Boston as the colonists protested “taxation without representation.” Although the British troops tried to behave themselves, the people of Boston saw them as invaders trying to deprive people of liberty. In 1770, when British troops were assaulted by a gang, they opened fi re on the crowd killing fi ve people. The news of the Boston Massacre spread through the colonies. However, thanks to the efforts of lawyer John Adams, the troops were only charged with manslaughter, and the guilty ones got off with a minor branding on the thumb. In 1773, the Sons of Liberty struck back by dumping East India tea into Boston harbor as a protest against tea tax. A blockade was placed on Boston, causing the

Why is it called the Full Flower Moon? is tradition of naming Moons is rich in history. We use Full Moon names that were used during Native American and Colonial times to help track the seasons. Depending on the tribe, May’s Full Moon was called the Full Flow-er Moon as well as Mother’s Moon, Milk Moon, and Corn Planting Moon. e May Moon marked a time of increasing fertility, with temperatures warm enough for safely bearing young, a near end to late frosts, and plants in bloom.

communities of Massachusetts to rally for support of the people. Other colonies worked against the blockade. The British continued to take repressive measures until colonists fi nally responded with “the shot heard ‘round the world.” What will Uranus in Taurus bring this time around? Uranus will be square Mars at the time of the ingress. Currently, there is a controversy over gun rights and assault weapons, with a new generation of young voters leading an attack against the NRA. With the Sun and Moon (the ingress is just after a New Moon) trine Mars, there will be a lot of focus and emotion about this issue. Gun owners will claim they are losing their rights if they have to get registration or insurance. It will be an issue that may carry on through Election Day. Uranus will be conjunct Mercury, and the electronic media (and social media) will be working overtime to carry all of the messages. Eris will be sextile Venus and Pallas at the time of the ingress. This may bring a greater surge of the #MeToo movement, and more dialogue about women’s rights in a period of repression. With Ceres on the Ascendant, more mother fi gures may be speaking out about issues, though with Jupiter squaring Ceres, the powers that be might not be too

supportive of Mom and Apple Pie. Jupiter is trine Neptune, and using religious arguments may be a major tactic at this time. Saturn will be conjunct Vesta, asteroid of hearth and home, and there may be appeals to home security and comfort. Saturn-Vesta will be trine Uranus-Mercury, and the appeal to domestic matters may have the most attention. Chiron and Juno will be squaring Saturn-Vesta, and there may be questions about how safe your domestic life is if you don’t have good healthcare or a support group to help you out. There may be thought-provoking questions asked, like, “Does keeping a gun in your home make you safer than keeping a killer from getting a gun?” Pluto will be making slight approaches aspecting Eris at this time, not making an exact square until 2020. We may be able to see what sort of issues may be brought out at the time of a Pluto-Eris square. The best expression to sum up such a square is “It seemed like a good idea at the time.” Decisions may be made which might seem to be helpful, but may have disastrous repercussions later on. Those who follow the Uranus in Taurus chant of “Long Live Chains” may regret having such restrictions placed upon them.

Elizabeth Hermon“Patterns of Partnership.” It’s about ways in which charts speak about what we need

in a partner, not so much in terms of planet and/or sign compatibility, but larger, what I call wavelength patterns.

Years ago, I was speaking with an astrologer about her and her husband’s charts. She said she could never gure out astrologically why they were together. I pointed out the patterns in both charts that said to me that they are on the same wavelength. It’s not a tra-ditional way of looking at “compatibility” in charts. She said she’d never heard that before,

and would have never thought about their charts that way.

Elizabeth Hermon, M.A., has been an astrologer for over 40 years, and has clients all over the world. Her clientele is quite diverse: from Wall Street executives and CEOs of large corporations to students and housewives; and from the elderly to new-born babies. Daily Candy, an internet publication, referred to her as “Hollywood’s A-list dar-ling” because she has read the charts of so many Acade-my and Emmy award winners. Mostly, though, she says, her clients are just regular people who are questioning their lives and purpose or are in crisis and need help g-uring it all out. She tends to be practical in her readings, feeling that astrology is a great tool for helping us all navigate Life’s often turbulent waters. Elizabeth has a Master’s degree in holistic studies/expressive therapies from Lesley University, where she was granted permission to use her already existing astrol-ogy practice as her internship.
