April 19, 1775 has been held in esteem as the date for the beginning of the American Revolution. Ralph Wal-do Emerson praised it in verse with reference to “the shot heard ‘round the world.” e colonial resistance at Lexington and Concord showed the British that the provincials were a force to be reck-oned with. On that day, the British army marched out of Boston, playing the tune “Yankee Doodle”, which was written to mock Americans. By the end of the day, the retreating British had to listen to the colonial irregulars sing the song back to them as a taunt. A er that, “Yankee Doodle” ceased to be a British march-ing song, and be-came an American classic tune. Another event on that day which became part of American legend (thanks to Henry Wadsworth Long-fellow) was “ e Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.” When it was learned that the British were sending troops to Lexington and Concord, Paul Revere was sent to warn the people of the countryside that the British were com-ing. Longfellow’s poem insured that Paul Revere would be remembered as a national hero, and not just a simple

silversmith. Unfortunately, the midnight ride was not as impressive as Longfellow made it. ere were oth-er riders that night spreading the alarm to every Mid-dlesex village and farm. Paul Revere only made it as far as Lexington, where he warned John Hancock and

Samuel Adams to leave town at once. A er that, he was caught by a British patrol and had his horse taken away from him. e pa-trol decided not to arrest him, but just sent him home on foot. Even with-out Longfellow’s poem, Paul Revere does have an im-portant place in American history. When the Com-mittees of Corre-spondence were sending news to the other colonies, Paul Revere was one of the most valued couriers.

He was part of an intelligence group that collected and evaluated news of British military activities. It was as part of this group that he received information in De-cember, 1774 that the British in Boston were going to con scate and consolidate all supplies of gunpowder in New England.

Paul Revere’s Other Ride

A large store of gunpowder was kept at Fort William and Mary in Portsmouth, NH. On December 12, 1774, Paul Revere received a report that the British were send-ing a ship to Portsmouth to haul away the gunpowder. is was what prompted a ride on December 13, 1774 (far longer than the famous “Midnight Ride”) in which Paul Revere rode from Boston to Durham, NH to warn the New Hampshire patriots of this event. Paul Revere rode to the home of John Sullivan, a Durham lawyer and freemason, who would become one of George Washington’s leading generals. At the time, John Sullivan was one of the most hated men in the area. As a lawyer, he made his fortune by means of what we would call today “frivolous lawsuits.” He would approach local farmers with maps showing spurious claims to their boundary lines, and then threaten to sue the farmers for thousands of pounds. Sullivan would then settle out of court for a few hundred pounds. Fortunately, the coming of the Revolution rehabili-tated the reputation of John Sullivan, and he became a local leader for the Sons of Liberty. It was as such that he greeted Paul Revere and received the news that the British were coming to take away the gunpowder from

Fort William and Mary. Sullivan went to work fast, con-tacting all of the Piscataqua River boatmen who were members of the Sons of Liberty. On the evening of December 14, 1774, a otilla of long boats and gundalows went down the river to the fort. ere were only a handful of British soldiers at the fort, and they were easily subdued. e boatmen removed all of the barrels of gunpowder from the fort, and spirited them away up the river. e gunpowder was hidden for months until a er the battles of Lexing-ton and Concord, when New Hampshire militia men brought the barrels down to Massachusetts. Most of the gunpowder ended up being used at the battle of Bunker Hill. In looking at a chart of Paul Revere’s othe ride, there are aspects for it being an act of war, but the revolution did not start in New Hampshire. Uranus, which rules revolution, was retrograde and void-of-course in Tau-rus. e only semblance of an aspect is a sextile to Juno, asteroid of marriage, but which also rules political con-nections. Paul Revere’s other ride was a major political event, showing that acts of rebellion could be coordi-nated between two colonies. With the Part-of-Fortune

conjunct Juno, it proved to be one of the most successful raids leading up to the revolution. Neptune, descending in the chart, is squared by the Sun, and the raid was a naval disaster for Britain. A British ship did not arrive in Portsmouth until Decem-ber 17, 1774, and then was run onto the shallows by a river pilot who was serving the patriot cause. Chiron and Saturn were in opposition to each other, and may have marked the decline of the old power structure. It is worth noting that some of the leaders of the rebel-lion were doctors, in particular Dr. Joseph Warren, who became the provincial president of Massachusetts. A highly charismatic gure, it was said that if Joseph War-ren had not been killed at the battle of Bunker Hill, he might have gone on to become the rst President of the United States. e most impressive feature of this chart is the Grand Trine with Eris in Capricorn trine the Moon and Jupi-ter in Taurus, and Mars and the North Node in Virgo. Moon-Jupiter trine Mars-North Node indicated a suc-cessful raid and a building up of the colonial army. With Eris in the Grand Trine, it was the kind of success that would inspire other missions until a goal of open war-fare was reached. However, there was one bit of irony involved in this other ride of Paul Revere. Mercury is retrograde in the chart, as well as semi-sextile Eris, squaring Mars and the North Node, and quincunx the Moon and Jupiter. It turned out that the information that Paul Revere received was errone-ous. e British were not planning to remove the gun-powder from Fort William and Mary in Portsmouth. e ship that arrived on December 17 was just bringing more British troops to the town, and not going to take away the gunpowder. With Mercury sextile Saturn and trine Chiron, the false news did have a good result for the patriot cause. e Sons of Liberty did end up with the gunpowder, and the British had a major loss. People started to think the British army was not as invincible as they claimed. e realization set in that war was inevitable, though thoughts of independence were still premature. As for Paul Revere, he had a nice ride to New Hampshire, which served as a practice run for his other great rides.
