WHY ARE THESE THINGS IMPORTANT?

Our world is 'VUCA' - this acronym was developed by the US military to describe the state of affairs post-cold-war, and is highly relevant today. VUCA stands for:

Volatile - likely to change rapidly and unpredictablyUncertain - the unknown - hard to predict what

things will be likeComplex - made up of many, different partsAmbiguous - not definite, unclear meaning

Having had a lived experience of the impacts of the pandemic, do you recognise some of these feelings?

We want to help you learn about the changing nature of study and work, and to become aware of the skills and knowledge you'll need to equip yourselves to survive, and thrive, in the contemporary world.

It's very important to have the skills to be ready for anything, and take control of your future, helped along by your amazing families, teachers, and friends, who will give you the support you need to reach your goals.

You'll then be able to help them, your community and the world to flourish.

The future is yet to be imagined. In a fast-changing world, tomorrow will always belong to people who are ready for anything.

Western can help you become an agile learner, who is flexible, and able to think creatively.

We’ll help you to become a critical thinker, and an effective communicator, with the ability to challenge conventional thinking.

WHAT MIGHT THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE?The pandemic is a very serious crisis for the whole world, but it is also creating lots of opportunities for us to think about, and to respond differently, make new plans, highlight new, healthier priorities, and change things that may not be working, for the better. It has presented you with many challenges, and is also giving you lots of opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge that you’ll need, to succeed in an ever-changing, uncertain landscape - of life, study and work. That may sound a little daunting, but it can also be an exciting prospect.

A crisis is also an opportunity.

Be open to new ideas, and thinking differently, be bold, and prepare yourselves so you are ready for whatever the future holds.

TASKS In this booklet, you will have the opportunity to:

≥ Identify your strengths, skills and existing knowledge.

≥ Map where you are right now in your journey, by colour-coding, writing notes, and making connections (drawing lines) between 21C skills / interests / study areas / jobs (customise and map things in your own way, so it all makes sense to you. You might like to share this with your parents and teachers, to help them understand your thoughts about your future. Or, you can work on it by yourself for a while, until you’re ready to share it. Doing these activities will highlight the natural overlaps of your individual attributes and interests, and they will also show you how they inter-relate with certain kinds of degrees and jobs.

≥ Identify the skills and knowledge you will need to work towards and achieve your future career goals.

≥ Create a paper plane (or many!). Write at least 1 main strength on it, as well as 1 study goal, and 1 work goal.

≥ Navigate the challenges in this workbook

by reflecting on your individual qualities, and begin to learn how to manage feelings of uncertainty (it’s OK if you don’t know all the answers yet, this takes time).

≥ Use your critical thinking and problem-solving skills, curiosity, imagination, resilience (this means not giving up, even when things are hard), to push through, and find solutions to any obstacles you encounter.

≥ Test and refine your ideas from multiple perspectives (viewpoints). Ask yourself often...what if..?, learn to cope when things go wrong, and figure out how to move towards your targets.

≥ Find opportunities in the challenges. Think, make, and test possibilities, using your available resources.

≥ Apply your existing skills and knowledge in order to find a range of possible solutions.

Not everything you try will work. That’s OK. The important things to ask yourself are: What did I learn when things went wrong? and, How can I do it differently next time?

Write your skills and interests on a piece of paper. Decorate it and give it an awesome design!

Create a target that shows one degree you chose from the previous pages, and a few jobs it may lead to.

Make as many different planes, rockets and targets, with as many different degrees and jobs as you like. Then, it's time to head outside!

Take a tape measure with you to record the furthest distance that your plane is able to fly.

Set up your target(s), and aim to hit the centre. If you hit your target, congratulations, you made it! Now try to make your plane go further.

You may find it doesn't fly exactly the way you'd hoped - that's OK! Like life, the journey won't always go exactly as you planned. Use your

problem-solving and critical thinking skills to figure out why it didn't work. Try various strategies to help you reach your destination.

≥ Write your skills and interests on a piece of paper. Decorate it and give it an awesome design!

≥ Create a target that shows one degree you chose from the previous pages, and a few jobs it may lead to.

≥ Make as many different planes, rockets and targets, with as many different degrees and jobs as you like. Then, it’s time to head outside!

≥ Take a tape measure with you to record the furthest distance that your plane is able to fly.

≥ Set up your target(s), and aim to hit the centre. If you hit your target, congratulations, you made it! Now try to make your plane go further.

TRAJECTORIESBE FUTURE-READY!

A trajectory is a curved path, or arc, followed by a flying object going from one place to another.

This is a great image to keep in mind as you develop your future plans. In this activity, you will make some flying objects, and a target, and try to make your creations reach their destination.

Like life, it won’t always be easy, there’ll be turbulence, and you may even have a few disasters along the way.

DON’T GIVE UP!Part of the process of reaching a goal, is being able to push through difficulties and unexpected events. It can be tricky to navigate, but keep trying to solve problems, and don’t let these challenges stop you. Learn from the things that go wrong, make different choices, and try, try again.

TRY THESE COOL IDEAS!

PRACTICE FOR 2022’s YEAR 11 ON-CAMPUS UNI-DAY CHAMPIONSHIPS !

≥ Make flying objects (see links above). You can use special paper, or hand-decorate some plain paper.

≥ Paint, draw or make a target (eg: from paper, cardboard, a paper plate, or other found objects)

≥ You could make a planet, or a landing pad as a destination for your rocket to try and reach. What sorts of special features might it have? What does it look like? Build it and decorate it. Draw or paint a logo, flag, picture or word on your target, planet, or landing pad, that shows what your destination is all about (eg: the name of the degree you might want to study, or the wider study area, or a particular job). Make your target in 3D (clay, dough, wire, paper, junk, weave grass or paper, collage).

≥ Gather objects for ‘distance markers’ (eg: pegs, sticks, stones, leaves, etc), and a long tape measure.

≥ Now its time to head outside into the backyard, or local park, and fly your amazing craft!

≥ Measure your best distance out of 10 attempts. Have competitions with your friends and family.

≥ Record it with a video, or photograph. Share your best results and your funny bloopers!
