Design Thinking puts a structured process to INNOVATIONconverting it from ART to SCIENCE

Design Thinking focuses on- Deep User Immersion (uncover unarticulated needs and perspectives)- Exploration of multiple ideas (a great idea is a mix of multiple ideas)

- Rapid prototyping (fail forward)

Design Thinking Workshops

Contextual, Experiential, Fun, Impactful!

Page 7: Design Thinking - TinkerLabs 2016

Workshop DetailsIt will be a rigorous and experiential 2 day workshop.

Participants will work in teams, and spend considerable time outsidethe classroom, physically engaging with their users. They will createlive versions of their solutions and actively test and refine these withreal users. Videos and stories will be used for elucidating varioustechniques throughout the workshop.

In this program, you'll apply the design-thinking process to realchallenges in a rigorous hands-on exercise. Using a clear, step-by-step process that combines creative right-brained thinking-such asbrainstorming and visualization- with traditional left-brained analysis, you will learn to develop creative solutions across domains likeproduct development, marketing, market research, sales, andoperations management.

Workshop Agenda - Day 11 - IntroductionUnderstand design thinking framework through engaging casestudies

1.1 - Hands-on ‘Design’ ChallengeTeams will start working on a live challenge. This challenge will befinalized post discussion with the organization.

1.2 - Empathy exercise – Feel the userEmpathy is the foundation of human centred design process. Weneed to observe, engage, and immerse in the user’s experience todiscover unarticulated needs and spot opportunities for newsolutions. In this session, teams gather their user’s challenges byconducting interviews and observation sessions.Tools and exercises: Empathy interviews, Journey mapping, Mindmapping, Extreme user study, Data visualization, Empathy mapping

Workshop Agenda - Day 22.1 - Reframing and Ideation – Go wide and wildTwo of the biggest enablers of innovation are ‘reframing of problemstatements with different perspectives and insights’ and ‘generating ideaswithout judgement and early rejection’. The former offers a platform forinnovation and latter builds on it. In this session, teams synthesize theirlearning from the empathy phase; develop their hypotheses and points ofview, and generate ideasTools and exercises: Problem reframing, Stakeholder relation mapping,Brainstorming, Analogues2.2 - Prototyping and Testing – Fail fastTwo of the biggest enablers of innovation are ‘reframing of problemstatements with different perspectives and insights’ and ‘generating ideaswithout judgement and early rejection’. The former offers a platform forinnovation and latter builds on it. In this session, teams synthesize theirlearning from the empathy phase; develop their hypotheses and points ofview, and generate ideasTools and exercises: Wizard-of-oz prototyping, low-resolution prototyping anduser driven prototyping, feedback capture grid

Workshop Finale2.3 - Industry Stories on Design Thinking in IT, Marketing,Operations, Finance et al

Cases and stories from various sectors like Technology, FMCG,Healthcare, Financial Services and across domains of marketing, operations, finance etc.

2.4 - Open house- Take design thinking to your respective roles

In this session, participants will apply their learning from the programto identify opportunities for design driven innovation at theirrespective roles. These can range from market research projects andmarketing campaigns to new product development and humanresource management, based on specific contexts and challenges oftheir teams/departments.

Output & TakeawaysParticipants will learn the following from our workshop:

- Unlock new business opportunities in a systematic(step-by-step) manner- Explore beyond conventional ideas to exciting concepts for newpossibilities- Appreciate and engage in experimentation and iterativeprototyping- Become collaborative T shaped professionalsThe vertical stem of the T is the foundation: an in-depth specializedknowledge in one or two fields. The horizontal crossbar refers to thecomplementary skills of communication, creativity, empathy and anunderstanding of fields outside your area of expertise.- Experience the complete Innovation & Problem Solving Journey (Insights -> Ideation -> Implementation = INNOVATION)

Page 12: Design Thinking - TinkerLabs 2016

Success StoryThe workshop has provided a road map for actualizing innovation at the work

place. We have used this in our working and especially for the promotion ofATVM cards/tickets whose sale had reached a plateau in the recent past. Your

suggestion that the solution of the defined problem should not bepreconceived but has to be started from ab-initio has been refreshing and

practical. We conducted field study and obtained customer feedback. It hasgiven new insights and we have improvised our promotional efforts.

Your methodology for innovation can be straight jacketed for real lifeproblems and we have been immensely benefited by using it.

Success StoryThank you TinkerLabs for conducting a brain stimulating and an emotive

workshop for my team at Hitech Plast. Our team has greatly benefitted fromthe workshop where they learnt the 3i’s – ideation, implementation andinnovation. The team felt that the format used for workshop was a good

example of how innovations can be done on a continual basis at theworkplace. The workshop design created an atmosphere of enthusiasm and

positive spirits among the groups to unlock their potential ideate newconcepts to seek amicable long term solutions to the most challenging

situations through collaborative interactions.

Most importantly, I found that they were energized and had that vigor toimplement their learning’s’. We look forward for more such workshops from

your end.

Design Thinking Assessments

Page 18: Design Thinking - TinkerLabs 2016

Design Thinking Assessmentcan be done in two modes:

SKILLSET based & MINDSET based

Page 19: Design Thinking - TinkerLabs 2016

For the current business worldMINDSET based approach provides

comprehensive & exhaustive results

Page 20: Design Thinking - TinkerLabs 2016

Four broad mindsets are consideredin Design Thinking

Human Centeredness Meta Cognitive

Experimental Collaborative

Page 21: Design Thinking - TinkerLabs 2016

We have developed theseassessments based on research from

d.School andStanford School of Education

Page 22: Design Thinking - TinkerLabs 2016

Deployed in either of the two formsExercise based or Questionnaire

and is taken in bothSelf & Cross Evaluation Mode

CIIE - IIM Ahmedabad used ourexercise based assessment to recruitparticipants for their flagship event -Startathon. They saw a significantincrease in success rate of theirstart-up accelerator program thanksto our assessment module.

Innovation Consulting

Page 24: Design Thinking - TinkerLabs 2016

Sample Innovation Consulting

Feb 2016: (Week 1)Mahindra Retail has placed a few bets - new products, servicesand verticals. These bets are based on analytical research bytheir team.

Feb 2016 (Week 2) We join the team as external consultants. We bring in the focuson Desirability of new solutions. We propose to the team - letscreate solutions which are Desirable, Feasible & Viable.Desirability can be best gauged using Design Thinking.

Page 25: Design Thinking - TinkerLabs 2016

Sample Innovation Consulting

Feb 2016: (Week 3+4)We conduct 66 empathetic interviews (60-90 minutes longinterviews each) covering the entire value chain. We create amap of end users journey & from this map identify pain-points& opportunities.

March 2016 (Week 1)We use the datapoints from our research to evaluate the betsplaced by Mahindra Retail. In this process, we nullify a fewbets, validate a few bets and bring some new bets to the table. We present our research with the Mahindra Retail team toMr. Anand Mahindra.
