My ideal city is one built on self-reliance, efficient
design, a variety of community interaction and a
respect for natural systems. Self-reliance is cre-
ated through: renewable energy independence,
local food production, water source in river and
detention ponds, viable commerce, education, arts,
and recreation. Efficiency is found in limited square
footage and multi-use buildings that account for
entire day and week use (schools typically vacant
on weekends become churches; school cafeterias
serve entire city 24/7, school recreation facilities
open to public). Community interaction suits a wide
audience through: residential siting both rural and
urban in density, interior and exterior focus; avail-
able apartment or single-family residences, close
or distant from city core; school, recreation, dining,
and park spaces all shared; pedestrian and bike
transportation. Appreciation for natural systems is
inherent in: large parks, botanic garden, community
garden, and vegetated streetscapes; sustainable
and renewable energy; visible agriculture and ranch-
ing; accessible waterfront and wetland boardwalk;
all visible through planner’s attention to designed
vistas, both architectural and landform.
