During my seven months at EDSA, I was able to work on a wide range of projects. With each project my responsibilities varied as did the scope, size, location, and program providing me a rounded and broad experience with the firm and landscape architecture overall. Wild Prairie community was designed as a part of a neighborhood design studio, incorporating various aspects of traditional neighborhood design and new urbanist principles. The site was an 80 acre plot of farmland on the north side of West Liberty. The drainage ways on the site not only helped shape the development, but also provided an opportunity to create large prairie areas that served as water retention areas, drainage swales, and a park and trail system. New urbanist principles guided the design of Wild Prairie, considering vehicular and pedestrian traffic, public open space, ecology and a mixture of high and low density housing.

The Prairie Ridge development consists of a unique housing development situated in the center of a sustainable agricultural system. The form of the development is based on concentric circles radiating out from the urban space which includes park space, mixed vegetables and fruit, row crops, and livestock pasture areas. Placement of the elements is also based on suitability analysis using GIS mapping. Along with the two main aspects of urban development and agriculture, the development includes an extension of Iowa State University, which serves to educate and aid in production for the agricultural system. The combination of the elements creates a distinctive region that places sustainablilty and community interaction in high regard.

The downtown Des Moines area has been experiencing a renaissance in the recent past and is looking to the future. This 20 year plan looks at an area that is primed for development and lays the foundation for a district that contains a mix of retail, commercial, entertainment, and residential. A major component to the project was locating a site for a new hotel that would serve the recently constructed Iowa Events Center. By analyzing the area and looking at sites that were undeveloped and in need of renovation we were able to establish where and what was needed to make the district successful. The proposal also included guidelines for streetscape improvements and a form based coding system.

Nollen Plaza is located in the heart of downtown Des Moines and acts as the “front yard” to the city’s civic center. The existing plaza is under utilized due to age, design flaws, and lack of programming. The design incorporated some of the original plaza’s form, which was based on the shift of the grid of the downtown street layout. My design also incorporated many of the intended uses such as an interactive water feature, large gathering space, as well as more intimate seating areas. Additionally the redesign includes turf area, outdoor dining, and provides more opportunities for programming.

This project was part of a community design studio that involved the whole class and looked at redeveloping areas of the Iowa State University campus. This project was located in an area known as Marston corridor, a part of campus that is unutilized and mainly seen as a pass-through space. The main focus of the project was getting feedback from the users of the site. Surveys of students, faculty and maintenance staff, as well as analysis and charrettes aided in determining how the area could be more successful. The addition of seating areas, hardscape, and open space made the area into a more user friendly part of campus.
