Summary
Hi, my name is Callam and I’m a product designer! During my time at university I have matured as an individual and evolved as a designer. I would like to work with a company that can continue to help me take steps forward both as a person and in the design world.
In this portfolio you will see a collection of different work, demonstrating the various skills and techniques I possess. This will include observation sketching, ideation sketching, modelling, 3D CAD work with both Rhino and Solidworks, using both in conjunction with Photoshop to provide high quality renders.
As well as my skills, I have also included some key projects which taught me invaluable information for use in industry such as working as part of a team, and playing to each others strengths, looking at the design process from initial briefing to a commercially resolved final design, and also working to strict deadlines and getting the work finished to a high quality.
Aircraft Wheel RackMy Individual Project is about the exercise rehabilitation for long term hospital patients. I noticed that after my dad had been discharged from hospital having finished his chemotherapy he was extremely weak, struggling to even climb the stairs. I realised that this was a real problem that is increasing as the NHS tries to discharge patients as early as possible to free up space and there needed to be a solution that helped patients engage with life after hospital.
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” After chemotherapy is completed cancer patients are left in very weak health. With no structure to the day and being able to do very little can often bring on depression which leads to a downward spiral.
After a broad range of ideas I was finally able to settle on a fun product that rewarded users for putting effort in. It is to encourage movement whilst patients are in the hospital to prevent muscle deterioration because they have nothing to do.
Aircraft Wheel RackThis was my major project at S2. It is a wheel storage rack that Airbus Military wanted for storing their A400M wheels. There have been many iterations of this rack and it has been designed in a modular way so that it can be produced to fit different sized wheels and still stack on top of each other to save on storage.
The wheel storage rack comes in 3 versions. The first version simply stores the wheels. This is used for short storage times. The second version stores the wheels and allows for individual wheel rotation whilst in storage. This is for small numbers of tyre storage. The third version stores the wheels and allows the rotation of all the wheels at once. This is for large numbers of tyre storage when it takes a long time to rotate each wheel individually. It also provides consistancy within the rotation.
The iterative process has been closely linked with Airbus Military who performed on-site testing so that we knew the end product was of the highest quality.
Wheel Bearing ProtectorDuring my time at S2 Aerospace, we designed and developed a bearing protection system for aircraft tyres. This was to tackle the problem of existing wheel hub protection costing too much, and requireing multiple engineers to attach and remove.
Our design can be quickly attached and removed by 1 engineer and has no metal parts. It is significantly cheaper to manufacture then existing products. It has been designed such that you can interchange the parts to fit any wheel bearings.
I have been lead designer throughout the project.
Oil Drainage TrolleyWhilst working at S2, we got a contract from GE Aviation to design and manufacture an oil drainage trolley for engine parts. There were specific dimensional requirements that needed to be followed closely so that parts would attach securely.
The design incorporated a stainless steel draining tray, a stand for holding the components, and a rack with a layout that would contain the parts in a symetrical way whilst maintaining maximum space efficiency.
I ran this project from its start through to its completion.
Wheel Transport TrailerThis wheel transport trailer was designed in conjuction with the wheel storage rack. It is for taking the wheels, wheel dolly and gas bottles from the storage hanger, to where the plane is on the airfield. It has been designed to have as low ground clearence as possible and large ramps to reduce the angle required for moving the heavy wheels and wheel dolly. It has been designed using materials that will not be damaged when left outside for long periods of time.
I managed the project and did all the design and development.

Contour - Lightweight SeatIn our final year we were able to work with a highly respected UK based company. They gave us a brief to work in a team of 5 to create a new front passenger car seat that reduced the weight by a large amount as well as looking lightweight and keeping the feeling of the companies ideals.
We performed extensive concepting taking inspiration from modern furniture and renowned architects such as Zaha Hadid. We ended up choosing a concept that revolutionised the way you actually sit on the seat by using flexible contact points. It also gave the seat a very lightweight and modern feel to it.
The design incorporated the use of modern manufacturing techniques such as selective laser melting (SLM) and had technical features that would welcome the user in and help maintain concentration when driving.
Modelling was a very important part of the process because we didn’t know if the concept would even work. We went through many design iterations based on ergonomic data we were able to collect and created a loadable model that prove our concept worked.
Concept Render done by another group member
Citrus JuicerMy final year mechanical design simulation project was to design an electronic citrus juicer which would fit in with a chosen brand (I chose Braun).
We worked in groups of 4 for the research, which included current market trends, types of gears and motors, initial mechanism design, calculations and testing.
I worked on all the calculations and mechanism design which involved working out what gear trains we would need, what motors we would need, finding out what the output torque would need to be.
We than split to individual work for the shell design and how it would actually all come together whilst keeping the brand image. The CAD work is all my own and proven to work.

The Live project was our final 2nd year project and a culmination of all the skills we learnt throughout the year. It was a group project of 4 people and we worked for a UK based company called Omlet.
We were given a brief of designing a chicken incubator and run that fit into the Omlet brand and revolutionised incubating eggs and the first weeks of life for the chicks. We were tasked with the ideation, development, marketing, manufacturability and production within a 4 week project.
We all worked on the design and then split into different areas. I worked mainly on CAD work to make sure it was completely manufacturable for injection moulding. The Final model was also done mostly by myself and another member of the team.
Our candler, the eGlow (shown on the right), was a working model that lit up when an egg was placed on top. It would press down the spring loaded LED that would complete the circuit.
Social networking was an important side to the design also. We designed a system for creating a community and sharing experiences. We created booklets with the product to help encourage users to go online with their experiences.
BrandingWhilst at S2 aerospace i put a lot of work into rebranding and updating the face of the company. I helped redesign the website into something that was far more modern, easy to use, and make it clear what services the company can provide.
I also designed flyers and documentation about all the different services and products that S2 provided. This was to be taken to air shows, for clients that visit, and for our agents to pass around the world to increase our reach of client base.
It was important to have brand consistency yet instantly know what the different products and services were which is why i designed a template that could be reused throughout, whilst only needing the change the colour scheme to match the product.

Observational SketchingBeing able to draw what you picture in your head can sometimes be very difficult, so it is important that you can draw what you see. These skills can be transfered between mediums.
ModellingModelling is an important part of design development and can be done in many different mediums from simple 2D card, through to blue foam and clay. Each provide different levels of resolution that can help solve some problems and highlight others.
