Design overview The West Gate Tunnel Project will deliver a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, providing a much needed second river crossing, quicker and safer journeys, and remove thousands of trucks from residential streets.

A design for the project has been selected. In response to community feedback we’ve developed a design with even better connections, less community impacts, more walking and cycling paths and new green spaces.

Key design updates include:

• a longer tunnel which keeps the westbound exit within the West Gate Freeway but further away from existing homes

• an improved city access design with simplified connections and two fewer crossings of the Moonee Ponds Creek

• over 14 km of new and upgraded cycling and walking paths – including a 2.5 km veloway above Footscray Road

• improved pedestrian and cycling connections between communities along the West Gate Freeway

• nearly 9 ha, the equivalent of almost four MCGs, of new community open space including parkland and wetlands and more than 17,000 trees planted

• world-class architecture, urban and landscape design that celebrates the Aboriginal heritage and maritime history of Melbourne’s west

• high-quality noise walls designed with residents in mind to reduce noise and protect privacy while allowing natural light

Key benefits of the design

The West Gate Tunnel Project will slash congestion from Geelong to Pakenham

Melbourne’s freeways operate as an interconnected network. What happens on one part of this network can affect people travelling on other parts –

even those that are many kilometres away. An incident on the West Gate Bridge can triple travel times for motorists.

The project will provide a much-needed second river crossing – a vital alternative to the already busy West Gate Bridge. More lanes on the West Gate Freeway will slash travel times, and separated express

lanes will reduce weaving and merging.

It also includes improved access to Webb Dock for trucks which will take trucks off the West Gate Freeway and directly to the

Bolte Bridge and 30 km of extra lanes will be added to the Monash Freeway.

The latest smart technology will be used to control all of these key connections into, and across Melbourne.

1 Completing a missing link in the Kororoit Creek Trail to provide a continuous journey from Altona to Caroline Springs.

2 Completing and upgrading the Federation Trail to provide a separated path from Werribee to the city.

3 A longer tunnel moves the westbound southern tunnel portal and ventilation structure further away from people’s homes.

4 A new 3 ha park in Altona North will create open space for nearby communities and connect with the Federation Trail.

5 Better road design with three express lanes between the M80 interchange and the West Gate Bridge to reduce weaving and merging.

6 High-quality noise walls designed with residents in mind to protect privacy, reduce traffic noise and be visually appealing.

7 A new path between Spotswood Station and Hyde Street Reserve to connect the neighbourhoods of Spotswood and Yarraville.

8 New open space, landscaping and path connections will enhance Hyde Street Reserve.

9 Almost 3 ha of park and wetland opposite Yarraville Gardens will transform the industrial land in this area.

10 A new cycling path on Hyde Street and a pedestrian bridge over Whitehall Street will link Yarraville Gardens and the Maribyrnong River and take cyclists and pedestrians off a dangerous and busy road.

11 A landmark major second river crossing will provide a much needed alternative to the West Gate Bridge and create a new gateway to the west over the Maribyrnong River that speaks to the maritime and Aboriginal history of the area.

12 A new elevated 2.5 km veloway along Footscray Road will give commuter cyclists a safe and express route to and from the city.

13 Better visual and environmental outcomes through a simplified design and two fewer crossings of Moonee Ponds Creek.

14 A pedestrian and cycling bridge over Footscray Road will provide a new and safer connection between the Moonee Ponds Creek, veloway and Capital City Trail.

Urban design

The project will feature world-class architecture, urban and landscape design. It considers the form and character of the built environment and how people access, use and enjoy public spaces.

The West Gate Tunnel Project’s urban design has been carefully considered to enhance the local character with better walking and cycling connections and high quality recreational facilities. The infrastructure celebrates the rich history, Aboriginal heritage and maritime history of Melbourne’s west.

Melbourne is well-known for its excellence in urban design - from innovative buildings, attractive structures and landmark bridges to the clever use of public spaces. The project will build on and extend the reputation of leading urban infrastructure in Victoria.

A sustainable design

The West Gate Tunnel Project will meet an ‘excellent’ Infrastructure Sustainability rating by reusing and recycling materials, minimising construction truck movements and using smart design and sustainable equipment and materials to reduce energy during operation.

Environmental Effects Statement (EES)

The EES for the West Gate Tunnel Project has detailed information about how the project could affect people and the environment and how the impacts will be managed. The EES has assessed potential impacts in 17 areas including transport, air quality, noise, landscape and visual, vibration, business, ecology and human health. Construction will start after we have planning approvals - expected later this year - with works to be completed by the end of 2022.
