Welcome to BGE Design and Manufacture, a course that will introduce you to the world of professional product design, problem solving, engineering and innovation.
Throughout Design and Manufacture you will become experienced in the shaping, forming, manipulation and finishing of materials to create commercial quality products -‐ to designs that you have developed yourself.
This is not for the faint-‐of-‐heart! Any design must be justified against design factors and a whole host of economic, environmental and social issues must also be considered?
DESIGN & MANUFACTURE
During Design and Manufacture, you will spend time in both the design room and the workshops to develop skills and knowledge in both designing and making.
Employers and universities are wanting new recruits to have skills in problem-‐solving, evaluating existing ideas and solutions (and spotting flaws!) and planning new ideas.
During Design and Manufacture you will develop all these skills and set yourself ahead of others when applying for courses and jobsin the future…

Graphic Communication is at the very heart of design, creativity, business, manufacture and industry.
GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION
In an ever more complex world, communication through graphics is essential. It is used in everything from user interfaces, games, movies and advertisements through to manufacture, architecture, design and simulation.
In Graphic Communication you will learn about:• Creative graphic design• Graphics for manufacture• 2D and 3D Computer Aided Design• Technical drawings• 3D Animation and Simulation• Desktop Publishing• Professional printing• Building drawing• Problem solving• Spatial awareness
You will learn new manual techniques for creating graphics along with using the latest industrial software and hardware used by professional graphic designers and engineers to solve problems and present solutions to their clients.

GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION
PRACTICAL WOODWORK
Practical woodwork is a course that speaks for itself. It is designed to focus on quality craftsmanship and allow you to learn the skills to manufacture products from wood. During the course, you will learn to use a huge range of hand and machine tools.
This course is not for the faint of heart; you must become experienced in producing items to the very highest quality and to very precise sizes and tolerances.
Although there is no final written exam in this course, you will be consistently assessed in your marking out, cutting, shaping and finishing of every product. Critically, you will learn how to safely operate in a potentially dangerous environment and develop skills that can help you prepare for the world of work.
In practical woodwork, you will create a wide range of products, consolidated by the final ‘Course Task’.
This course task will involve you manufacturing an item independently and your final grade will depend on the knowledge and skills you have developed previously while undertaking the course.
Throughout your time in the subject you will keep a journal of the tools, materials and techniques you learn about.
Whether you are wanting to learn skills in craftsmanship for pleasure or a future career, prepare for anenjoyable, challenging and rewarding course that will push your practical abilities...

HOSPITALITY: PRACTICAL COOKERYHospitality: Practical Cookery introduceslearners to the exciting and demandingworld of the Hospitality industry. It developsa range of practical based cookery skills forlife and forwork. People with these skills andknowledge are well placed to undertakefurther training at college or move straightinto thecateringworkplace.
This is a mainly practical based course whichallows Pupils to develop a knowledge andunderstanding of foods and cookery relatedskills to use at home, in the widercommunity or in possible futureemployment in theHospitality industry
On undertaking the course pupils will bedevelop skills that will provide a strongfoundation for their future coursework atNational 4/5 level.
HOSPITALITY: PRACTICAL COOKERY

cooking processes and learn to accuratelyfollow a wide range of interesting andculturally diverse recipes.

• Current dietary advice and its impact on health.

FASHION & TEXTILESFashion & Textiles, as the name suggestsintroduces pupils to the Fashion and Textileindustry. The knowledge and skills acquiredwill be valuable for life and for the world ofwork.
People with these skills are well placed toundertake training or courses in furthereducation on leaving school, or movedirectly into the fashion/textile industries todeveloptheirskills further on the job.
The main purpose of the course is todevelop the practical skills, constructiontechniques, knowledge and understandingwhich supports activities in thefashion/textile industry.
Initially pupils will be developing and consolidating a range of practical skills at BGE level. Before moving on to meet National 4 or 5 towards the end of the session..
Overall during the course you will develop:
• Practical skills and textile construction techniques to plan and make straightforward fashion and textile items.
• Safe use of a wide range of tools and equipment.• Knowledge of textile properties and characteristics
and how they can be applied.• An understanding of a range of factors that
influence fashion/textile choices.
• Basic investigation and evaluation skills

FASHION & TEXTILESARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE ?
ExpressiveArt& Design allows learners to develop theirpersonal thoughts and ideas in a visualform. Pupils will look at the work of artists,their influences, their materials and theirtechniques.
Pupils will select stimuli and produceanalytical drawings and studies, They willresearch and develop their thoughts andideas in 2D and/or 3D. They will produceobservational drawings and studies anddevelop their expressive ideas andcompositions.
Overall pupils will gain experience in using arange of media and styles in the productionof a range of creative and thoughtprovoking work.
ART & DESIGN
DesignThis area of the course helps learners to plan, research and develop design ideas in response to a given brief. Learners will develop their problem solving skills as they consider the design opportunities and constraints of the brief.
Pupils will develop their understanding ofdesigners’ working practices and the factors that influence their work. They will experiment with and develop media handling skills in 2D and/or 3D formats.
During Art & Design you will develop all these creative and sought after skills which will set yourself ahead of others when applying for courses and jobs in the future…
