"I can’t understand why people are frightened of new ideas- I’m frightened of the old ones.“

John Cage

Search for the big idea……..

Each project has a inherent big idea that needs to

be established to give the project credence, and

meaning

Define the big idea early in the process

Innovation supersedes the Status Quo

Big Ideas can connection to the location, culture,

context, sustainability and history

No idea is a bad idea-keep an open mind

4Tri-Idea Boards Semiotic reasoning „the story‟

~

Pre-rationalize the project to give it real inherent

meaning-we called it „the story‟.

all the ideas can relate to each other

don‟t post-rationalize your design after you designed

the project

tie the ideas to the region, climate, massing, context

and culture

create a rich and convincible story

establish a high level of authenticity to each project

~“The multiplicity of ideas is what I'm interested in”

Thom Mayne

Smart thinking

create a strategic direction

encourage each team member and sometimes the

clients a chance to think about the project from a

different direction

Leave all baggage of pre-conceived ideas at the

door

Be open to experimentation, exploration and

discovery

Recruitment

Attract new talent having them know that the „studio

design group’ in the office exists within the office

structure and culture

Keep the group diversified with multi generational

and multi culture of thinkers

Create a demand for working with-in a increasingly

tight marketplace

Mentor young inexperienced staff by involving them

into a design process similar to a school studio

Use the studio group as a transition from school to

the professional world

The „Charette‟ Process

Offer the „charette‟ as forum for planning the project

with those who can influence design decisions.

major activity that not only involves the design team

but the owners consultants and stakeholders.

Get early feedback on initial ideas-it is easier to set

a course than to change it.

Kick-off the „design process‟ establish an agreement

on clients project dreams and goals.

Identify your „design process‟ and philosophy

Have the clients be the designer for the day

promote „collective enthusiasm‟ for the project with

early realistic goals and directions.

Involve branding early

Work with groups already established within the

office early in the process of ideation-design from the

brand out.

Have the architecture inform the brand and the

brand the architecture.

Understand the relevance to the client

understanding the brand identification and expansion

Keep the experience seamless from beginning to

end –architecture is the brand

Architectural Critic

“preeminent example of the power of architecture on business, and how the public understand and experiences a brand.”

The power of the sketch

Express your ideas and concepts

Communication tool for explaining quick concepts

Observation and invention tool-spontaneous idea

exploration

You got a great idea, great draw it!

Lance Josel-RTKL

To open architecture to questions of perception, we must suspend disbelief,

disengage the rational half of the mind, and simply play and explore.

Doctrines cannot be trusted in this laboratory. Intuition is our muse.

Clients Impression of the process

Keep the process transparent

Involve multiple disciplines in the office

Give the impression that a clients dreams can

become realities both financial and creatively.

Have client participation in Charette- let them feel-‟

“This is exactly what I was expecting when you told me

not to come in a tie”.

Be inclusive

Introduce urban planning concepts

Collaborate with urban designers and landscapers

early in the process

Understand the buildings effect on the city as a

whole-5 elevations

Influence good urban principles as part of the

architecture

Great American Ballpark cut the building with a „gap‟

allowing people to connect visually to the river
