Design & Innovation Objectives

○Through our work with the d.school at Stanford, participants will leave with tools and strategies to share with their district colleagues to help advance their work implementing the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

○Participants will leave with a shared framework for identifying design challenges, setting the stage for continued cross-district collaboration around design and innovation work in CCSS-M.

Activity

Fix the lit candle to the tree so that it will not drip wax onto the grass (at all).

Functional Fixedness: A cognitive bias that makes it difficult to use familiar objects in abnormal ways

• How did the activity FEEL? • What did your team

consider first? Second? Third?

• Was there an ah-ha moment? Can you name what lead to that?

Goals for August 2015

○Piloted your team’s prototype #1…small scale. ○Collected feedback on the prototype utilizing the Empathy phases:

Observe, Immerse, Engage ○Piloted prototype #2 with revisions based on feedback… small scale. ○Conducted a SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities,

Threats) to decide on next steps. ○Engaged in conversation as a team about weather this prototype was a

solution worth scaling?

Prototyping Process Framework

Grade Levels

Deployment #2

Iterative Process

Sample Size Scheduling Observations Using the Data

• At which (and how many) sites should you test this prototype?

• Would a particular grade level be better than others? Why?

• Are there particular teachers you should target with your prototype? Why?

• What behaviors will you observe for to see if your prototype is having positive impact?

• How will you collect feedback?

• How does your team plan to organize and ‘make sense of’ data that is collected in all phases of the process?

• How many cycles of iteration do you hope to deploy before EOY?

• What is your goal for deployment #2 of prototype?

• Who/How will you meet with your MiC Leadership Team to share findings, discuss next steps?

First Round

○8 Minutes: Stay with chosen District ○Go Deeper: • Consider questions similar to “Test” phase yesterday

where you gave each other feedback. • Consider questions on the Prototype Process

Framework that your team will be looking at this afternoon (new version passed out today).

Third Round

○8 Minutes: Stay with chosen District ○Go Deeper: • Consider questions similar to “Test” phase yesterday

where you gave each other feedback/asked questions. • Consider questions on the Prototype Process

Framework that your team will be looking at this afternoon (new version passed out today).

Small Group Cross District Discussionsuggested protocol in folder

○Considering your progress from day 1 of the Design & Innovation Institute II, which elements of the Prototyping Process Framework:• Sample Size• Scheduling Observations• Using the Data

are you most uncertain about? Why?

○Consult with colleagues from another district to help solve some of your most pressing challenges related to this work.
