THE HOSTS OF THIS EDE

Ecodorpen Netwerk Nederland

The Dutch EDE is organized by Ecovillage Network Netherlands; a Dutch partnership

that supports the network of individuals and communities pursuing a sustainable

lifestyle. Ecovillage Network Netherlands has the vision to see a world in which

individuals and communities are inspired to authentically shape their lives in a

conscious, sustained and substantial loving way and so inspire others. It has several

aims, including:

• Contact with funds and financiers for example, to help acquire land

• Help, advice and mediation

• Education and research: developing curricula, knowledge and initiating new

development

• Promoting co-operation

• Organizing an annual festival

• Exchange of knowledge and experience including several networking weekends

Most of the teachers and facilitators are connected to ecovillages in the Netherlands and

the Ecovillage Network Netherlands.

Ecovillage Bergen Ecovillage Bergen is a community where people live in a

harmonious and respectful coexistence; in loving connection

with each other, the earth and the cosmos, and with space

for development of everyone's abilities. They build sustainable housing and run several

workshops for theatre, music, dance. They have their own exhibition space, restaurant

and shop, recycling facilities, and other community amenities. It has created space for

healing, recreation, permaculture gardens, animals, water treatment and renewable

energy generation.

Ecovillage Bergen wants to be self-sufficient as possible in the areas of food, energy,

water, sanitation and waste disposal. Building materials are locally sourced and

recycled as much as possible. Residents and volunteers from the village enjoy working in

this experiment where old and new techniques, principles and insights in the field of

community development and sustainability will be applied. Ecovillage Bergen is a

foundation and consists of about 20 people. The foundation is sociocratically organised.

The general circle is for policy making and main decisions. Other cicles have a specific

field of interest; gardens, building and organisation.

Regular meetings are organized around different themes and there is exchange with

other groups within and outside the Netherlands. Ecovillage Bergen aims to be an open

and dynamic village. They see co-operation as the basis for growth and

entrepreneurship. They enjoy working with related people and organizations.

The Aardehuizen Olst Vereniging Aardehuis Oost Nederland intention is to build, work, live in their

homes and in their lives in harmony with nature, in constructive relationship

with one another and as a source of inspiration to the world around them.

Their aim is realised through the construction of an ecological housing project of

23 self-sufficient Earth-houses in Olst, whereby all aspects of sustainability are taken

into consideration and balanced into an harmonious whole.

The project makes optimal use (and re-use) of local existing waste materials,

resources and natural processes.

Households and communal systems are fully self sufficient in terms of energy,

water and sanitation; Reducing the carbon footprint of residents to a fraction of

the Dutch average. Solidarity is an underlining guiding principle - this is

reflected in the pursuit of environmentally friendly building and living, which is

in principle accessible to all budgets.

Communal property is shared and cared for collectively.

Mutual respect, open communication and shared responsibility is balanced in a

natural way with individual freedom.

The project has an educational objective to promote a sustainable lifestyle in

general, and CO2-neutral building and housing in particular.

The project combines housing with small scale employment which is largely

created by educational and recreation projects

HOSTING SITES

The Netherlands This EDE will be held in the Netherlands; a small, densely populated

North Sea country located in Western Europe, just North of Belgium and

West of Germany. The largest cities in the Netherlands are

Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. Amsterdam is the

country's capital, while The Hague holds the Dutch seat of

government and parliament. The port of Rotterdam is the largest

port in Europe. The name Holland is also frequently and incorrectly used to refer

informally to the whole of the country of the Netherlands.

"Netherlands" literally means "lower

countries", influenced by its low land and

flat geography, with only about 50% of its

land exceeding one metre above sea level.

Most of the areas below sea level are

man-made. Since the late 16th century,

large areas (polders) have been reclaimed

from the sea and lakes, amounting to

nearly 17% of the country's current land

mass. With a population density of 505 people per km2 the Netherlands is a very

densely populated country. Nevertheless, the Netherlands is the world's second-largest

exporter of food and agricultural products, after the United States. This is partly due to

the fertility of the soil and the mild climate. The Netherlands has a long history of social

tolerance and is generally regarded as a liberal country, having legalised abortion,

prostitution and euthanasia, while maintaining a progressive drugs policy. In 2001, it

became the world's first country to legalise same-sex marriage.

Bergen The first twelve day’s we will stay at

Ecovillage Bergen in the

Netherlands. This ecovillage is

situated in Bergen; a picturesque

town where art, culture and nature

come together. Bergen is located in

the woods and near the beach of

Bergen aan Zee. Within the center of

Bergen a beautiful church with

surrounding bars, restaurants and

boutiques.

Deventer and Olst The second part of the training will be

held in the sustainability center De

Groene Golf (‘the green wave’) in

Deventer. This building is the main

building of Transition Towns

Netherlands, and is a project of

Transition Town Deventer and its

surroundings. It is a non-profit

organization with a social mission.

The Green Wave is an inspirational

meeting place for creative people, do-

ers, dreamers and pioneers. People who are looking for a sustainable way of life, with

respect for each other and care for future generations and the Earth. It is situated

nearby the Aardehuizen Olst.

The aardehuizen in Olst were

inspired by Earthships of architect

Michael Reynolds. The first

Earthships date back to the ‘70s and

have been tested thoroughly by use.

Discarded materials and local

building materials determine the

buildings. An earthship is designed

for off-grid living. Architect Michel

Post of Orio Architecten has modified

the design to meet Dutch conditions.

(rains, temperature through the year

and soil).12 of the buildings have tire walls - filled with rammed earth - supporting the

roof. The other 11 buildings are built with straw walls with a wood frame supporting the

roof. The roofs are slanted 9º to catch a maximum of sun in winter and very little sun in

summer.

Deventer is one of the oldest cities in

the Netherlands. Already around

the year 800, there was an urban

settlement on the river IJssel. In the

Middle Ages the settlement grew

into a full-fledged city. Its location

on the river IJssel made it possible

that the city could become an

important trading center. As a

prominent member of the medieval

Hanseatic trade alliance the city

experienced in the 14th and 15th

centuries its "golden years.

Deventer’s rich history has been very much preserved. There are just a few cities in the

Netherlands that can show as many monuments as in Deventer. Moreover, almost all

the monuments in the city have been beautifully restored in the last thirty years

ECOVILLAGE DESIGN EDUCATION The curriculum of the EDE draws on the experience and

expertise developed in a network of educators from some of the

most successful ecovillages and community projects around the

world. The training is designed for anyone who wants to work

on sustainability education, sustainable development and

transition activities. It shows the coherence of social, economic,

ecological and holistic aspects within communities. This way it

deepens your vision on sustainable development. The course

also prepares you to create a sustainable way of working and/or

living together with a group of people.

The Dutch EDE training is like all EDE programmes

worldwide based on the curriculum of Gaia Education.

The Ecovillage Design Education program is a

comprehensive course of a minimum of 125 hour.

The curriculum is the result of years of collaboration

with educators all around the world. These teachers are

organized in the group ‘GEESE’ which stands for

‘Global Ecovillage Educators for Sustainable Earth’.

The first EDE training was given in 2005 in Findhorn,

Scotland. By now, the training has been organised 200

times all over the world in 34 countries , enriching the

lives of more than 5000 participants. The curriculum is

an official contribution to the UN Decade of Education

for Sustainable Development.

GEN and GAIA EDUCATION The Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) is a growing network of sustainable

communities and initiatives that bridge different cultures, countries, and continents.

GEN serves as umbrella organization for ecovillages, transition town initiatives,

intentional communities, and ecologically-minded individuals worldwide. People and

communities meet and share their ideas, exchange technologies, develop cultural and

educational exchanges, directories and newsletters, and are dedicated to restoring the

land and living a cooperative sustainable lifestyle

.For more information:http://gen.ecovillage.org/en

Gaia education is a leading-edge provider of sustainability education promoting

thriving communities within planetary boundaries. Initially envisioned as the

educational branch of GEN, Gaia education now functions as an independent

organization offering a holistic systems approach to education for sustainable

development. Gaia Education works in partnership with global educators, government

and nongovernment agencies, ecovillages, universities, and the United Nations to bring

sustainable development solutions, curricula and transformative learning programmes

to communities and ecosystems everywhere. Gaia Education’s flagship curriculum is an

official contribution to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. Gaia

Education is an active partner of the UN New Agenda for Global Action for people,

planet and prosperity that also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom.

Acting in collaborative partnership we are determined to take the bold and

transformative steps needed to shift the world on to a sustainable path. For more

The

Dutch EDE vision In this EDE we try to create a close interaction between

teachers and students and between students themselves.

Participants with expertise in specific fields are invited to share

their knowledge with the whole group. Hands-on activities will

also be facilitated by course participants. We as teachers will

often participate in group - and other processes, partly as

supervisors/counsellors, but also co-discovering the actual

learnings and the learning process as result of the current

(socio-cultural) situation.

Authenticity is achieved by using real situations within learning

environments. The exercises will draw on real situations from

participants' and facilitators’ lives, so that the learning will be

both an understanding of theory and abstract concepts and –

often more important - a deepening experience of the applied

concepts in concrete socio-cultural situations. The several levels

of learning environment are

your individual inner universe with your personal

imprints from your past life, your world-views, your

stories, feelings, possibilities of thoughts,

the course group with its inter-individual dynamics like shared cultural

backgrounds as well as inter-cultural dynamics; personal reactions on one

another; co-creations like mutual support and potential shared ideas as well as

conflicts and misunderstandings; .

and the different ecovillages and excursions, with all its existing and tangible

examples.

EDE mandala The EDE training is designed as a mandala, called the

'sustainability wheel' and includes everything that is seen

as the four primary dimensions of human experience:

Worldview, Ecological, Social, and Economic.

Download the EDE curriculum for a comprehensive

overview on the website: www.transitie-educatie.nl.

The content of the EDE training represents the core values

of large established ecovillages around the world: Honor

unity through diversity; enjoying the difference in culture

and faith; equality among all cultures, races and gender;

promotes social justice and ecological awareness; stand up for peace; strengthen

individual leadership and local actors; strengthen the awareness of individual potential

and self-sufficiency; respecting the living Earth as our planetary home.

Dutch EDE program The program consists of several components:

Theory

The theory is explained by the

twenty themes illustrated in the

sustainability mandala, through

exercises and examples. The theory

is linked to the experiences made

during the exercises and the

knowledge, skills and personal

experiences of the participants.

Practical skills

The EDE uses many different methods.

Also, the theory is applied in practice. The

group forms from the start a private

community where tasks are divided among

themselves. In addition, we practice

regularly practical skills such as working

with clay, gardening in the permaculture

garden, creating art and making designs.

Own path

At the beginning of the EDE training you get the

opportunity to articulate the aims you want to

work on during the course. During the EDE

training we will focus on different ways to work

on your own aims. Both in ???contracts??? and

during peer-to-peer meetings. We work with

peer-to-peer groups, where you can reflect in

pairs at your own processes. We also work with

home groups (CLANS), which is reflected

together on group processes, the content of the

EDE, own goals, and feedback. Half an hour

CLAN time is scheduled each day.

Barter system

At the beginning of the course each participant receives some coins. All

participants are challenged to develop activities for the other

participants. You can earn coins with activities and by taking part in

others’ activities you spend coins. Who has earned the most coins at the

end?

Design assignment

In the training there are nine parts where people

work in design groups on an assignment. The

assignment is based on real problems as well as

the aims set by the participants themselves. At

the end, the participants present the results to

each other.

Meditation, mindfulness and visualisation

Half an hour is spent every day to relax;

Meditation, mindfulness and visualisation.

Participants’s for EDE Students with an interest in sustainable design – Teachers who want to give classes on

sustainability – People interested in developing sustainable group projects – Residents

or builders of sustainable communities and ecovillages. – Urban and rural activists,

FACILITATORS AND HOSTING TEAM

Paul Hendriksen Paul started as a journalist, then worked for thirteen years at COS

Overijssel, a regional knowledge and expertise in the field of

development issues and international cooperation, but above all Paul

Hendriksen is an ambassador of doing-thinking. In Deventer he put

sustainability ideas into practice: Transition Towns. Was initiator of the

association Aardehuizen Oost Nederland, a collective enterprise to build

a project of 23 houses inspired by the 'Earthship' concept in Olst, north

of Deventer, Overijssel.

He has expertise in consultancy, project development, organisation and training on

sustainability issues. And specialisation in the field of community processes aimed at

sustainable development, Transition Towns and related bottom-up initiatives; lectures,

presentations and workshops on local resilience and a wide range of sustainability

issues, from the philosophical and historical to the practical level (and back); I

profoundly believe in Added Value Afterwards.

Fedde Joritsma With simple and affordable techniques, Fedde creates sustainable

facilities for sanitation, water and energy in off-grid locations. He gives

advice, courses, supervises projects and sells do-it-yourself packages. He

calls himself therefore bionier. He currently lives in Groningen.

Together with his partner he has a chalet in the City Park. He is also

working with a group to set up an ecovillage in Drenthe. Innovation is

his profession and passion. His approach is multi-disciplinary,

investigative and focused. He is practical, skilled in IT, building and

renovation. He can inspire people. In his studies and extensive foreign

experience, he learned to find solutions with creativity, perseverance and inner

motivation and were fitting the culture, nature and economy.of the countries he was

living in. His expertise are ecological sanitation, soil and water conservation, solar

energy (low-tech), training and facilitation methods, development strategies and

transition and Ecovillages. He studied at Aquatic Eco-Technology, Hogeschool Zeeland,

Vlissingen and International Land & Water Management, Wageningen University and

Research Centre (WUR), Wageningen.

Work experience:

In Kenya, he evaluated socioeconomic and environmental impact of sand dams.

In Suriname he researched how people kept their farmland fertile.

In Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, he has introduced

decentralized technologies along with development organizations in rural areas.

He learned all the details on urine-separation toilets, solar water heaters and

solar food dryers. In some areas arose small businesses.

In Bolivia, He learned to drill for water up to 80 meters deep with local

materials.

In an educational bicycle project I cycled such a 12,000 kilometer, I gave mer

than 350 workshop hours and built more than 20 solar water heaters, ecological

toilets and solar food dryers (see www.theturningwheel.org).

Jacqueline Fletcher Jacqueline was born on a farm in north-west England where her love

for Nature came from walking the land with her grandfather. Her

childhood was split between school in London and holidays on the

farm. After graduating from the University of Utrecht in The

Netherlands, she completed post-graduate degrees there and at the

University of Amsterdam. For many years she combined work as a

theatre director, dramaturg and performing arts critic with teaching

theory and practice at universities in various countries. Her lifelong

engagement as an activist in the environmental movement and green

politics and her commitment to continuous education led her

eventually to retrain, taking a masters in Design for Sustainability

through Gaia Education at the Open University of Catalonia, after which she completed

her Permaculture Design Certificate and went on to take teaching diplomas in Socal

Permaculture and Urban Permaculture. She is a fully qualified Gaia Education

Ecovillage Design Trainer and has experience in Australia, Thailand, France, Belgium

and the United Kingdom. At present she is collaborating on the design for a

regenerative project in a former mining area of Western Australia and is researching

new developments in microbioogy and plant intelligence.

COSTS AND FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES We offer three different levels of contributing financially. Please tune in and find the one

that feels right for you:

• The Thrive Contribution - this amount allows us to work in a more relaxed way, allows

the Ecovillage Network Netherlands more activities in the future an also supports our

host organisations and will give us the possibility to offer more bursaries or finance the

travel costs for participants who cannot afford those.

• The Middle Path Contribution - this amount gives the team a sense of ease in

organising this EDE and it will already allow us to support the Ecovillage Network

Netherlands a little more generously.

• The Survive Contribution – This amount just about covers expenses and allows us to

manage to organise the EDE.

Thrive Contribution: 2100 Euro*

Middle Path Contribution: 1800 Euro*

Survive Contribution: 1300 Euro*

*These fees cover food, accommodation and course costs. They do not cover travel,

insurance and visa costs.

*If you like to have a private room, please let us know. We will ask you friendly to

choose the Thrive contribution if you do.

As organisers of this EDE, it’s our sincere dream that financial resources are not a

deterrent for people who want to attend this course. At the same time we are having

challenges as we partially live in the money economy and depend on money to make this

course happen. We want to find a balance between making it inclusive as well as

economically sustainable. If you want to raise the money to come to the Dutch EDE,

please write to us. We also suggest three creative options:

1. Empowered fundraising, raising the money in your communities and networks

through family, friends and well wishers, experiencing wider support webs;

2. Crowdfunding your course fee. If you need our support or guidance for these

strategies please write to us. We offer some support with this, while also being aware

that our team has limitations of time and energy. We welcome those of you who feel

called to use their talents and work towards the Dutch EDE fundraising campaign to

join us in the spirit of co-creation of this EDE. If you want to be one of them please write

to us.

3. European Funding + Erasmus. European residents may be eligible for the new

funding streams in Erasmus + through your affiliation with an Erasmus + registered

organisation. This 'adult education' fund started this year and runs until 2020. You will

need to explore with your national agency how the new application processes work in

your country. These links may help you start your investigation.

ACCOMMODATION

Ecovillage Bergen

We start training in Ecovillage Bergen. In this inspiring place, just behind the North

Sea dunes, people are working hard to build the village. The large concrete fields and

hangars of the former airport have given way to permaculture gardens and ponds. In the

large creative buildings experiments are conducted with sustainable construction and

sustainable energy. They are working hard on the components for the community

building. Some of the former hangars and bunkers are furnished as a hotel and equipped

with bunk-beds In the summer it is also possible to set up your tent. The Inn features a

large kitchen and a community room where the workshops will be given.
