Kidwells Estate at Maidenhead, in Berkshire, is undergoing major regeneration involving

seven new blocks, which vary from three to six storeys of structural concrete frame. Now

known as Parklands, this landmark £27.1 million project is a scheme for One Housing

and replaces seven 1960s built apartment blocks.Long cantilever walkways service multiple flats and the unusual design demands

presented a technical challenge for Schöck, who supplied the structural thermal breaks.

The design required as much natural light as possible in the areas around the walkways,

so extensive light wells are introduced at regular intervals along the length of the

galleries – effectively a series of elongated spaces, separating the walkways from the

building for large sections. This means far fewer structural connection points between

the walkways and the building than would normally be anticipated.

The walkways are cantilever concrete construction into internal reinforced concrete

frame; and because of the restricted connectivity point opportunities, the Schöck

structural thermal breaks had to resist a much greater shear load than would be the case

with a more conventional design.

Schöck resolved the various performance issues by designing in its type HPC Isokorb.

It is a product utilised only if horizontal, tension and compression forces are present in

the design – and it is necessary to integrate the type QP90+QP90 Isokorb as well, for

linear or point connection to support high shear loads. The result was a completely

secure thermally insulated load-bearing connection at all the key structural points.

The Schöck Isokorb range provides BBA Certification, LABC Registration and meets

full compliance with all relevant UK building regulations.

SHANGRI-LA at THE SHARD, LONDON At the newly

opened Shangri-la Hotel in London, all the marble

shower oors have been treated by SLIPSTOP.

The Savoy Hotel in London was closed in December 2007

for extensive renovations and reopened in October 2010.

Low Carbon, High Thermal Efficiency Pipe

for Plymouth City Heating Scheme

Flexenergy's energy-saving Flexalen pipe was the ideal

solution for Plymouth City Council when a new district

heating scheme meant re-routing the pipe network from

new gas boilers to serve offices in the Council House.

Hundreds of metres of compact grade High Pressure

Laminate from Abet Laminati has been used to inno-

vative effect at the new £20m Shree Swaminarayan

Sidhant Sajivan Mandal Temple in Kingsbury, London

designed by Loates Taylor Shannon Architects.

As part of the design, Brent Plastics supplied Abet

Laminati’s Decori Minimi 567 and 568 in 0.9mm in a

Mandarin texture and 807 in compact grade in a SEI

texture from the Colours range. The Decori Minimi

range offers a mottled effect decor created by the elec-tronic processing of a number of small textures. This

laminate was fabricated by BusyBee Joinery to produce

innovative shoe lockers in both the male and female

changing areas as well as shower lockers, cubicles and

wall panelling in the sports complex and elsewhere.

This stunning Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa Complex

is manufactured from stone and GRC comprising over

3,700 sq metres of temple, community centre and sports

complex. All materials were obtained from sustainable

BEHA, has introduced its environmentally friendly

‘Ijaz’ wireless controlled panel heater system

to the UK. The ‘Ijaz’ allows users to control any

number of BEHA heaters up to a range of 300

meters enabling full, flexible and complete

command of room temperatures throughout the

home.

Every BEHA panel heater can be made remotely

controllable with the insertion of a special aerial

receiver module which allows the user friendlytouch screen ‘Ijaz’ controller to alter the heat

emitted and turn the unit off and on. The heaters

can be controlled individually or collectively in

up to sixteen separate ‘zones’. They can also be

easily set to heat only when required, ensuring

lower fuel bills and minimal waste of energy.

The result is a modern, flexible, easy to install

and environmentally friendly alternative to

old fashioned wet central heating systems. In

addition the Ijaz controller has the ability to

control other appliances via a wireless aerial

switch for such use as turning lights off and on

for security purposes. Ijaz can also be remotely

operated for use such as switching on heating in

a holiday home before arrival.

BEHA heaters are designed to heat homes and

commercial properties. The large selection of

eleven models comes in two heights and all

heaters are finished in neutral white. The heaters

can be painted to any desired colour and BEHA

have now introduced glass fronted heaters in

white, blue, orange and dark grey. Projecting

from the wall just 83mm when installed, they

take up very little room or wall space. Both the

heaters and the wireless Ijaz system can be

installed by anyone, avoiding costly plumbing orelectrical bills.

An advanced low temperature heating elements

with a larger than usual surface area prevent

dust burn, helping those with asthma and other

allergies whilst reducing the risk of discolouration

to the heater, the surrounding furnishings and

wall coverings.

Herschel Infrared Heating brings up to 90%

cost and energy savings to test centre

Predicted to reduce energy consumption by 90%

compared with the previous heating system, Herschel far

infrared heaters have been installed in a vehicle test

centre and sub-let storage unit. The public sector client

also expects to see energy costs cut by 71% and carbonemissions reduced by 76%.

The existing heating consisted of seven gas heaters, these

were not zoned or controlled and required large amounts

of air to be heated for significant periods of time.

The decision was taken to install 22 Herschel Advantage

infrared heaters with a total heat output of just 44.85kW,

a figure made possible because they offer directional

heat for staff where needed and also heat the fabric of the

building rather than the air.
