For more complete descriptions of our most popular clays, see the preceding page.

Which clay should I buy?Picking a clay is a very personal choice. We carry many variet-ies of clay to allow you as much choice as possible, including Plainsman clays, Fairey Hy-Bond clays, and clays from four U.S. manufacturers: Laguna, Imco, Seattle, and Clay Art. This wide choice can make it confusing at first to know where to start. There are three major factors to consider when choosing a clay: temperature, color, and texture.

1. Pick a clay in the temperature range you are working in: low, medium, or high.

2. Choose the color you prefer. Colors range from white and grey, to red and dark brown.

3. Decide on the texture you want. Textures range from smooth to very coarse. For throwing on the wheel you will want a fairly smooth clay. If you're handbuilding, most clays can be used, but a coarser clay will survive the drying and firing process better.

Fairey Clays: same clay, different boxFairey & Co. closed their plant in January 1998, and moved to a new location. At that time they decided not to continue producing clays in the new location. The Fairey clays are now being produced at the Plainsman Clay plant in Medicine Hat. These clays are exactly the same as the clays produced for many years at the Fairey location in Surrey. Same materi-als,.same.recipe,.same.product..The.only.difference.is.that.they.are.made.in.a.different.location,.so.they.will.now.come.in.a.different.cardboard.box.

1. They can run any amount of dry clay when they are actually producing the same pugged clays. The Fairey clays are only made 2-3 times per year, so there may be a delay of 2-3 months while you wait for the production run of pugged clays. There is an extra mixing cost to do the dry clays this way: $2.00 per bagSo, dry clays made this way are the same price as a box of pugged clay, PLUS $2.00 per bag for the mixing cost.
