Building up the brain: new interdisciplinaryperspectives to understand and treat brain diseases
Introduction
The highest functions of the nervous system, including the
cognitive capabilities of the human brain, are rooted on the
formation of stereotyped and complex patterns of neuronal
circuits. A fundamental problem is to understand how, among
all the potential wiring outcomes, neural circuits establish these
patterns of connectivity in such a precise manner and with
an incredible reproducibility. A great deal of the answers lies
on the information contained in the extraordinary variety of
neurons that compose the brain, which selects and restricts the
connections of the circuit and modifies the way information
is processed in manners that we still need to uncover. Thus,
understanding how the human brain is built is prerequisite to
determine the abnormalities associates with the many diseases
that affect brain structure and function.
Achieving such a huge task has been, and still is, the
nightmare and the challenging dream of neurobiologists. The
last years have however witnessed spectacular advances
in the field owing to the development of new technical
approaches and the incorporation of novel conceptual
views and technical tools brought up by mathematicians
and physicists. The future of neurobiology and therapeutic
interventions to treat brain diseases clearly rely on our ability to
exploit this new blossoming of massive and diverse information
with an open state of mind. With the objective to promote the
identification of future goals, set the ground for collaborative
research and seed possible future breakthroughs, international
leaders in different fields of neurobiology will provide a
comprehensive view of the current state-of-the-art in our way to
solve the complexity of the human brain and the enigmas of
mental diseases.
