Notes for Mahala Johnson (b. abt.1823), daughter of Jacob Johnson: Mahala is listed in the following Census records: 1850 Marshall Co., WVa, #196; 1860 Marshall Co., WVa., Cameron P.O., # 1200; 1870 Marshall Co., Cameron District, # 207. In Mahala's will (Marshall Co., WVa., Court records, Will Book 2, pp. 82-83, signed 28 Dec. 1877 and recorded 07 March 1878.), she appointed her nephew Thomas H. Johnson as executor of her will, and left to him "all her undivided one fifth interest as heir at law of Jacob Johnson (deceased) in lands conveyed to Jacob Johnson in his lifetime by John H. Harford and wife and David Anguish and wife by deeds bearing date on 12th day of October 1841 and 29th day of April 1869", plus her undivided household and farm stock. She directed that Thomas H. Johnson give to her grand daughter Sarah Jane Johnson, daughter of Isaac Johnson, one good bed sted and bedding and one good cow, and give one hundred dollars to her grand child Manford St. Clair Eckles, when these grandchildren reach age twenty one. Witnesses to the will were J. W. Rickey and Uriah Harris. Notes for Morris Johnson (b. abt 1825), son of jacob Johnson: Morris is listed in the following Federal Census records: 1850 Marshall Co., WVa, #1230; 1860 Marshall Co., WVa, Glen Easton P.O. #797; 1870 Marshall Co., WVa, Clay District, #49; 1890 Special schedule, Union Veterans & Widows, Marshall Co., WVa, Rosby's Rock, House 102, Family 105. According to Morris' Pension Papers from the National Archives (Pension Claim #669665), Morris enlisted in Wheeling, West Virginia for 3 years on September 20, 1862, and served as a Private in Company A of the West Virginia Independent Exempts commanded by Capt. R. Hamilton, from October 1, 1862 until May 31, 1865. (Morris' serial number was 606.865.) He contracted bronchitis while on duty at the Suspension Bridge in Wheeling, West Virginia, on January 1, 1863. The condition became chronic and left him with a cough, shortness of breath, and a wheeze. On 05 July 1865, he was mustered out with the company in Wheeling, West Virginia. (From July 1865 to about Oct. 1877, Morris worked for Patrick Ouley in Putney Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio.) Morris' last pension payment was for $24 on December 4, 1894. He died on February 17, 1895, at about age 70, due apparently to his bronchitis. His widow, Elizabeth Prat Johnson, age 63, applied for a widow's pension on October 28, 1895, and received a pension under certificate number 417550. Elizabeth's last payment was for $8 on December 4, 1896. Elizabeth died January 26, 1897. Elizabeth's address was listed as Rosby's Rock, Marshall Co., West Virginia. In the 11th Census of the U.S., special schedule of Union Veterans and Widows, 1890, Morris' address was also listed as Rosby's Rock. Notes for Ezekiel Johnson (b. abt 1828), son of Jacob Johnson: Ezekiel is listed in the Federal Census record for 1850 in Marshall Co., WVa, #1231, at age 22 with his wife Mary, age 20, and son Silas, age 3/12. Before Ezekiel's death, he and Mary had 4 more children who are listed in the Federal Census record for 1860 in Marshall Co., WVa, Cameron P.O., # 1202. Ezekiel died at about age 30. An appraisement of his estate was "ordered at the February term 1858". (Marshall Co.,WVa, Courthouse, Assessments: Book 2, pp. 372-373.) The appraisement was submitted to the Clerk's office on 13 May 1858. Isaac Johnson purchased one set gears, double and single tree, and one colt. Mahala Johnson purchased one red heifer, and one black spotted heifer. Ezekiel's widow Mary kept one Sorrel mare, one set gears, one bedstead and bedding, one brass clock, one small lot dishes, one sow and seven pigs, one piece wheat in ground, and 20 bushels corn in shock. Administrator for the estate was Vanlier Arnold. Mary Cain (Cane, Kane) married Ezekiel Johnson before 1850 and had 4 children (Silas, Ezekiel J., Caroline, and Eliza Jane) by the time of the 1850 Federal Census. Mary was widowed by May 13, 1858 (the date of appraisement of her husband's estate: Assessments Book 2, pp. 372-373, Marshall Co. Courthouse, Moundsville, W. Va.. From the estate sale, Mary kept one Sorrel mare, one set of gears, one bedstead and bedding, one brass clock, one small lot of dishes, one sow and 7 pigs, one piece Wheat in the ground, and 20 bushels corn in shock. By the 1860 Federal Census, Mary was still in Marshall Co., W. Va., Cameron P. O., living next to her father-in-law, Jacob Johnson. (Jacob's farm was on Bears Ridge, off Fork Ridge, on the waters of Cedar Run.) On the farm with Mary was William Cole, age 35, a farm hand, born in Pa. By the 1870 Federal Census, Mary had married William Cole and moved to Lynn Camp P.O., Meade Twp., Marshall Co., W. Va.. Listed as living with them were Mary's children by her first husband, and three daughters; Patience, Angeline, and Mary Amanda Cole. (Mary's children by Ezekiel Johnson were counted twice in the 1870 Census, since they were working in other households and were also listed there.) Ezekiel Johnson's wife Mary's maiden name (Cain) appears in her son Ezekiel J. Johnson's obituary ("The Morning Observer", Washington, Pa., Sat., 31 May 1941.), and in her son Silas Johnson's death

No reference was found for her second marriage, but family history and several documents support her marriage to William Cole. By the 1880 Federal Census, Mary and William Cole (Coal) had moved to the Grant District, Wetzel Co., W. Va., and had an additional child, Macy, born 1872. William Cole's parents were born in Pa..(#R022 in Census abstract pub. by Wetzel Co. Gen. Soc.,1986.) At the time of the 1900 Census, Mary was age 72, widowed, and living with her daughter Mary Amanda and husband James E. Johnston (Johnson). On 12 Dec. 1899, Mary Cole sold the 27 3/4 acre parcel of land on the North Fork of Fishing Creek in the Grant District, Wetzel Co., W. Va., to her son, Ezekiel J. Johnson, for $100, reserving the use of the property for her natural life. (This handwritten document was notarized in Marshall Co., W. Va., on 12 Dec. 1899, by M. D. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 10;30 o'clock at Oak Grove M. E. church. Mrs. Williams was about 85 years of age and is survived by one son S.L. Johnson who lived with her. In the 1870 Federal Census (Marshall Co., W. Va., Cameron District, #184, taken Aug.-Sept. 1870), Caroline, age 15, is a domestic in the home of Jackson Bonar, age 45 and his family. Jackson Bonar is Caroline's grand uncle (brother to her maternal grandmother Matilda Bonar Bush). The family lives close to her brother Ezekiel J. Johnson's family. She was born in Cameron, W.Va. and was the daughter of the late Wylie and Clara (Murphy) Johnson. She later moved to Spring Valley, N.Y., where she was employed by Lakeside School until her retirement in 1974. She moved to Jacksonville, Fla. at that time and lived there until coming to Fairfield Bay six years ago. She has been a resident of Indian Rock Nursing Home for the past one and a half years and

was a member of the Fairfield Bay Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Messenger, and sisters, Helen Jetter and Lois Vitello. She is survived by a brother, Glenn B. Johnson, of Greers Ferry and his wife, Phe. Grave side services will be at Cleburne County Memorial Gardens on August 16 at 11 A.M. with Rev.
