The following Report of the proceedings of the Club during the last
year, was laid before the Meeting :
—
Report of the Proceedings of the ;fMaitIaillr €lul), since the General Amiual 3Ieeling ofeighteen hundred and thirty-four, and of the present slate of itsfunds.
The Council, immediately after the General Annual Meeting of last year, liad an offer
for pnblication by the Club, from Joseph Stevenson, Esq., of a Selection of Letters byScotsmen, Illustrative of the History of Scotland, from 1517 to 1530, the originals ofwhich were in the British Museum. The estimate to copy, edite, and supply notes, preface,
and index, amounted to the sum of Fifty Pounds. This proposal the Secretary was instructed to accept, conditionally, that letters were
supplied to form a volume of not less than twenty-five sheets.
Till early in November subsequent, this arrangement was conceived to be in progressof completion, when a letter was received from Mr. Stevenson, intimating that he hadascertained from Mr. Lemon, Keeper of the State Paper Office, that he was instructed bythe Record Commission to edite a Volume of Scottish Letters, of the time of Henry theEighth, which would include many of those in the list Mr. Stevenson had offered, andproposing that the arrangement for the Maitland publication should be considered at anend, as it would have been rendered comparatively valueless by the publication of thepurchasable work edited by Mr. Lemon.
In these circumstances the Council directed the Secretary to express to Mr. Stevensonthe sense of obligation felt by bis proposal to relieve the Club from its engagement to
publish these Letters, and to accept the same.
The next object of publication to which the attention of the Council was directed, wasthe possibility of obtaining a copy of an unique Manuscript in Corpus Christi College,
Cambridge, known by the few extracts of Leland, under the denomination of the ScalaChronica.
Mr. Stevenson intimated to the Secretary that he had visited Cambridge with a viewto examine the Manuscript, and become sufficiently acquainted with its contents, and that
having done so, he was of opinion there was no Chronicle the printing of which would doso much honour to the Maitland Club
" That the Author of the Chronicle, Thomas Grai, had been an active soldier employedduring many years in Border transactions, and Governor of Norham Castle—was aneye witness of many of the events which he details—was taken prisoner in 1355, andconveyed to Edinburgh, and there he commenced the Chronicle. The evidence of such
an historian gives immense value to the latter part of his Chronicle; and in the formation of
the earlier period, he seems to have availed himself of local materials, since he frequently
agrees with Fordun, Barbour, and Wyntown, where they vary from the accounts of the
English writers. He also used a singularly valuable document for the History of Robertde Bruce, which time has not spared us, at least the facts which he details are not to befound in Barbour."
The Secretary was authorised to request Mr. Stevenson to transmit a statement of
the probable extent of the Scala Chronica, and the expense that Would be incurred in
copying and collating and superintending it through the press, including preface andindex.
Mr. Stevenson being in Glasgow early in .June last, made the following communication." In again inviting your attention to tb.e Scala Chronica, I deem it unnecessary to recapi-
tulate tlie observations previously made upon its historical value. Should the Club
determine upon its publication, it appears to me that there are two periods from which it
might commence, either from the year 1066, or 1'272. The first of these plans would
embrace about 320 of your pages ; or if you preferred the latter sera, the number might be
reduced to about 230. As to the total expense, I beg leave to remind you of some of the
outlay which will be incurred before the copy can be procured. It will be necessary for
me to send a competent gentleman to Cambridge to transcribe the text ; the remuneration
which he will receive for the copying of the Old Norman French will amount to L.l 5s. (at
least) per sheet. He cannot copy more than a sheet in two days, and will frequently be
prevented from having the use of the MS. by the absence of the Master, holidays, &c.;
consequently I shall have to support him iu the expense of living at Cambridge for three
months, which at the lowest calculation will amount to two guineas a week, to wbich will be
added travelling expenses. To these I add my own expenses, making the text cost the Club
L.l 50 for 40 sheets. As I cannot state with certainty that 40 sheets will be the exact
number, I take the liberty of proposing that the deficiency or overplus of the text whenprinted, shall diminish or increase the present calculation at the same ratio. I hereby
express my anxiety to undertake the publication of the volume, which I shall complete in
every way, as far as editorship is concerned, forming 50 sheets, for the sum of L.l 85."
Which letter having been maturely considered, the Council unanimously resolved to
accept the offer therein contained, but delay till next meeting deciding at which date the
printing of the Chronicle should commence ; and in the mean time authorise the Secretary
to communicate to Mr. Stevenson the resolution of the Council to publish the work, and to
request from him further information as to the value of the contents previous to the year
1272.
The Committee appointed for the publication of Part 1, Vol. IL of the MiscellanyOF THE Club, have already printed the Dream of Rob Stene, from a Manuscript in the
Library of Dumblane, apparently of the period of James the Sixth ; and have collected, and
are assured of many important Manuscripts, so as to enable them speedily to complete the
volume.
Another volume is in progress through the press of Early Documents relativeTO THE Cathedral of Glasgow, commencing with Excerpts from the Chartulary of the
Archiepiscopal See of Glasgow.
Progress has also been made in copying manuscript for a Second Volume of the
WoDROw Biographies, commencing with that of Principal Boyd of Trochrig.
At a Meeting of the Council, on the 5th day of May, it was resolved that a motion
be submitted for the approval of the Members, that the Number op Members of the Club
should be extended from 70 to 80. This was urged to be expedient from the certainty of
respectable Candidates offering, from the additional funds their admission would put at the
disposal of the Club, and from the circumstance that the number proposed would exhaust
the extra copies printed at the expense of the Club, of " Hamilton's Lanarkshire," of the
" Maitland Miscellany," the " Wodrow Biographies," and other Club Books, the distri-
bution of which would operate as a barrier to any further extension of the Members of
the Club.
On the lOtU of July following, it was resolved as the opinion not only of the Memberspresent, but of a majority of those absent, who expressed their sentiments by letters, that
the Club should be increased from 70 to 80 Members.
At a General Meeting of the Club, on the 6th of November following, it was resolved
that till the number of the Club is full, a majority of Members voting in favour of a
Candidate shall constitute an Election.
On the 2d October last, Archd. Campbell, Esq. of Blythswood, was elected a Memberof the Club. On November 27th, Sir Michael Shaw Stewart, Bart., and John B. Gracie,
Esq. W.S., were elected Members of the Club. On January 8th, John Dunlop, Esq. of
Dunlop, and W. B. D. D. Turnbull, Esq., were elected Members of the Club. And onMarch 12th, Beriab Botfield, Esq., and Andrew Rutherford, Esq., were elected Membersof the Club.
Although by the resolution of the General Meeting of the Club the number of the
Members was increased to 80, thereby occasioning 10 new Members to be elected, yet in
consequence of the death of our highly esteemed associates, George Smythe, Esq., andAndrew Skene, Esq., the number of Members at present enrolled in the Club is 76.
Since last General Meeting there have been printed at the expense of the Club :
—
Collections upon the Lives of the Reformers and most eminent Ministers of the
Church of Scotland. By the Rev. Robert Wodrow, Minister of the Gospel at Eastwood.2 Vols.
