The Department of Metallurgical andMaterials Engineering (MME), earlierknown as Materials Science andEngineering at IIT Patna wasestablished in 2012.
From its inception, it has shown itsstrong impact in the areas ofresearch as well as industrialexposure. The field of study in theDepartment encompasses areas ofboth traditional and modernMetallurgy and other allied systemsofmaterials (e.g., ceramics, polymer,composites etc).
Our UG program in Metallurgical andMaterials Engineering has alreadycommenced in July 2019. The PGprogram (i.e., M.Tech in MaterialsScience and Engineering), started in2014, is more interdisciplinary innature.
Along with metals and alloys, theDepartment focuses heavily on avariety of Materials like ceramics,polymers, intermetallic, composites,electronic materials andbiomaterials.
The Department has reinventedconstantly to keep the curriculum inpace with the state-of-the-arttechnologies. This Department haspioneered a unified approach inteaching and research, which hasenabled us to evolve into aninterdisciplinary field catering todiverse applications.
MME Department at IIT Patna isendowed with world class facilitiesunder single roof which allow studentsto learn vital skills and obtain hands-on experience of latest technologiesused both in industries and academia.Department is actively engaged withvarious funding agency like SERB-DST,ISRO, NRB, BRNS, ManaliPetrochemical Ltd., Denka (Japan),Tata Steel Limited, MRF Tyres,Carborundum Universal Limited etc.

branch of modern engineering.Metallurgical and materialsengineering involves design,innovate and improve the process;to transform to useful productswe use every day in our life. It is adiscipline that enables both thecreation and application ofmaterials in society. Also, Materialengineers develop materials fornew applications, improve existingmaterials to enhance performanceand evaluate ways in whichdifferent materials can be usedtogether.
Department of Materials Scienceand Engineering was establishedin the year 2012 and was
renamed as Department ofMetallurgical and MaterialsEngineering in 2018. TheDepartment focuses on thefundamental and engineeringaspects of conventionalmetallurgy, materials andadvanced materials.The Department facultyspecializes in the areas ofphysical and mechanicalmetallurgy, phasetransformations,thermomechanical processing,electron microscopy, materialschemistry, nanomaterials, thinfilms and coatings, ceramic andmetal matrix composites,tribology, thermal spraying,polymer science and technology,
fillers, composites, ultra-hightemperature ceramics and phasefield modelling. Apart from the
regular teaching activities, theDepartment aims to trainstudents with the fundamentalsand expertise of design,synthesis, characterize, testingand production of variousmaterials and also with theknowledge of new technologiesin production and processing ofnew and advanced engineeringmaterials.The Department continues tostrive for excellence and developcontinuously through progressand improvement to establishitself as one of the leadingdepartments of education andresearch.

COURSE WORK PROFILE
Materials Science and Engineering(MSE) is an interdisciplinary field ofscience and engineering whichinvestigates the relationshipbetween the structure, propertyand processing of materials usefulfor various influence its properties.It is a discipline that enables boththe creation and application ofmaterials in society. Materialsscientists and engineers developmaterials for new applications,improve existing materials toenhance performance and evaluateways in which different materialscan be used together.The M.Tech. degree is designed in away to provide a holistic view on allthe classes of materials includingmetals, ceramics and polymers. Theprogram isintended to provide in-depthknowledge in the fundamentals,analysis and structure-propertycorrelation of various materialssystem.
