SECTION A: ORGANISATIONAL COMPONENT
1. Introduction
1.1 Welcome and brief description of the module The effective use of machine design is an essential tool to the solution of engineering problems.
In this module, the student is taught the skills to
Select (through “catalogue recipes” and / or calculations) and implement in a
mechanical design, appropriate bought-out items, such as (but not limited to) bolts and
nuts, power transmission elements and bearings.
Apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) to an existing - and a new
mechanical design
Know about and understand of the application of a broad range of manufacturing
processes
Students will also be introduced to a systematic design process to mechanical design as well as
the design approach to implement standard components as far as possible.
1.2 Using the study guide This study guide is a crucial part of the general study guide of the Department. In the study
guide of the Department , information is given on the mission and vision of the department,
general administration and regulations (professionalism and integrity, course related
information and formal communication, workshop use and safety, plagiarism, class
representative duties, sick test and sick exam guidelines, vacation work, appeal process and
adjustment of marks, university regulations, frequently asked questions), ECSA outcomes and
ECSA exit level outcomes, ECSA knowledge areas, CDIO, new curriculum and assessment of
cognitive levels. It is expected that you are very familiar with the content of the Departmental
Study Guide. It is available in English and Afrikaans on the Department's website.

5. Rules, requirements and guidelines General Departmental Rules & Requirements
See the general study guide of the Department in Section 1.2
In addition to the above, the following will apply for this module:
Class Rule:
You are expected to participate in discussions during lectures. As your fellow students are
dependent on the inputs you make, your participation is crucial. After all, you are also
dependent on their contribution.
Although you are expected to participate in discussions during lectures, you may not disrupt
the class in any way. This curtesy rule is to give your fellow students the opportunity to pay
attention to what is being discussed.
Group Assignment:
The group assignment will be done in groups of 6. Group members will be randomly
assigned via clickUP. See “Group Assignment” on clickUP for further details
Exam Entrance:
See the examination regulations in the Year Books of the Faculty of Engineering, Built
Environment and Information Technology (Part 1: Engineering, or Part 2: Built Environment
and Information Technology).
Pass requirement:
In order to pass the module a student must obtain a final mark of at least 50%.

SECTION B: STUDY COMPONENT
8. Purpose of the module The general objective with this module is to, in the field of machine design, emphasise
understanding rather than memorising. In Graphical Communication (MGC110) students get
exposed to mechanical engineering drawings and sketches. Different manufacturing
methodologies are also studied as part of the Graphical Communication module.
Manufacturing and Design (MOW217) builds on this basic knowledge by exposing students to
Selection (through calculation / catalogue process) of a wide range of mechanical bought-
out items. Where applicable, implementation of these bought-out items will also be
addressed.
An in-depth study of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and
A South African perspective of selected manufacturing processes
