Our Dance Companies

Mapdance, our postgraduate performance company, is an established and exciting company of young, dynamic dancers recruited nationally and internationally. The company performs and tours a diverse repertoire by renowned and upcoming contemporary choreographers.

The third year BA (Hons) Dance Performance students tour locally, nationally and internationally as dancers in 3Fall Dance Company. It is an intensive, work-based learning experience that develops your technical, creative and performance skills. You will gain experience in teaching by providing educational opportunities to school groups. There is also the opportunity to gain arts administration and technical theatre experience or work with our youth company 3Fall Youth based as Shoreham Academy.

The dance department has strong links with a variety of dance companies and organisations, resulting in a vibrant network across the sector. Many students benefit from successful work experience or placement opportunities via these connections. These have included: • Motionhouse • Loop Dance • Stop Gap • Jasmin Vardimon • South East Dance • Sussex Dance Network • The Point • Yorke Dance Project • One Dance UK • Scottish Ballet • National Dance Company of Wales • Pavilion Dance South West • Far Flung Dance Theatre

Placement opportunities

The ShowRoom – a fully equipped 212-seat public theatre venue - has built a reputation for presenting some of the most exciting dance and theatre companies touring on the UK circuit. Arts Council funding is supporting a programme of dance company performances, workshops and events in our Dance Theatre Space and the opportunity to see live dance work regularly ‘on your doorstep’ keeps you up to date with what is going on in the dance world. This programme aims to present emerging, diverse work from BAME, LGBTQ+ and integrated artists. In addition, there is a large gymnasium space together with two new sprung-floor spaces in the Academic Building. Also our students can use our well-equipped exercise laboratory facilities.

Our Facilities

Preparing students for the world of work when they graduate is built into our programmes through specific modules such as Preparing the Dance Artist for Work or Applied Dance (Placements). Several modules also support work-based learning opportunities alongside 3Fall Dance Company or mapdance and teaching experience and placements are an important part of the Education and Teaching programme. We also invite guest speakers to share their insight from a range of careers across the sector as well as workshops by choreographers and current practitioners. Graduates from our dance programmes have gone on to have exciting and rewarding careers and taken up influential roles in all aspects of the

dance profession. Our students have gone on to perform with artists such as Richard Alston, Tavaziva, Shobana Jeyasingh, Lila Dance, Protein Dance, BalletBoyz, Akram Khan and Flexer & Sandiland. Our students have also gone on to work at leading dance institutions such as Sadler’s Wells, RAD, Trinity Laban, ISTD, The Point. Numerous graduates are teaching in primary and secondary schools across the country, following completion of our PGCE Dance programme. Others have become community dance artists, creating their own companies such as Doodle Dance or working with different groups including CAT groups, Youth Dance, SEND, and the elderly.

Career pathways STUDENT VIEW We’re really lucky at Chichester to have the facilities that we do, the dance studios are amazing and the labs too. The course has a great combination of practice and theory. It’s interesting how we learn something in a physiology lesson and then are able to apply it to technique or performance classes. This transfer of knowledge helps us understand the information from multiple perspectives. Jody – BSc (Hons) Dance Science
