Our Physical Education department has

a long and established reputation. We

specialise in excellent modes of delivery

to enhance quality learning. Our primary

focus has always been subject knowledge

in all activity areas appropriate for

delivery in both primary and secondary

age ranges.

CPD for PE Teachers

We also offer a range of resources and techniquesfor creative pedagogy in both practical and classroomenvironments, including examination work.

The staff team comprises of a range of expertise,from an Advanced Skills teachers to an Olympic levelcoach that can develop the teaching experience ofschool staff. Our expertise covers an extensive rangeof areas from primary PE to A Level laboratories.

Research Methods for examination PhysicalEducation and Sports Courses

This CPD course provides teachers with anunderstanding of research methods that areappropriate for underpinning examination teaching in Physical Education and associated areas of study.The day course will enable teachers to energise theirown teaching and provide more meaning to datacollected by students during project work.

The CPD will consider;

•Research in the context of ‘A’ Level, BTEC and post16 examination syllabi

•Simple research design and the collection of validand reliable data

•Simple numerical and non-numerical methods ofdata analysis

•Reporting and writing conventions.

Assessment for Learning through the PhysicalThis course will provide teachers of PhysicalEducation in both the secondary and primary sector aguide to the tools to enhance assessment for learningin their lessons. The day course will provide practicalexamples which will enable school staff to enhancepersonalised learning within the classroom.

research. Our involvement in research

as well as a long history of practical

experience has allowed us to develop a

strong rationale for our approach to

adventure education.

Outdoor and Adventurous Activity: Unlocking the Potential.

This course aims to offer the developing teacher anopportunity to refresh their existing knowledge ofO.A.A. This course will provide new and engagingways to approach outdoor and adventurous activityfor newly qualified and experienced teachers alike.

This is a one day attendance course which aims tocomplement all teachers’ professional developmentas well as those who have a special interest in O.A.A.

The structure of the day follows our philosophy oflearning through experience and as such will have avery practical approach. Key learning outcomes forthe day include:• Identify and generate meaningful learning outcomes

in O.A.A• Structure progressive outdoor and adventurous

activities that meet intended learning outcomes.• Gain many new and engaging learning activities to

Our Sports Coaching Science team can

provide a range of CPD opportunities, which

are pitched at differing levels appropriate to

the needs of differing levels of coach.

These courses are also appropriate for the PhysicalEducation Teacher who wishes to upskill theirknowledge in coaching in order to implement anddeliver extra-curricular coaching activities.

Our Sport, Exercise and Coaching Scienceprogramme has been built on strong foundations. Wewere one of the first institutions in the UK to developa sports studies programme.

These CPD opportunities are in the form of threehour short courses, are taught by well-qualified staffand are further enhanced by a strong research andconsultancy profile in sport, exercise and coachingscience. Many staff at the University have attainedprofessional accreditation in research or consultancyfrom the British Association of Sport and ExerciseSciences (BASES), and are also professional coachesand coach educators. Continuing professionaldevelopment (CPD) is fundamental in thedevelopment of the coach and coaching practice.

These short courses are delivered either in aworkshop, seminar or practical format by highlyqualified coaches.

A course booklet is provided to supplement thecourse, which provides references to access furtherinformation, along with a certificate of attendance.

Courses can be delivered at University of Chichesteror at any external location.

The courses on offer are as follows:

• Understanding the Coaching Process (Planning,Conducting and Evaluating)

• The Effective Coach (roles, responsibilities, skillsqualities of a coach and health and safety and riskassessment)

• Ethics, philosophy and code of conduct for sportscoaches

• Coaching behaviour • Understanding cognitive and motor developmental

issues in coaching• Demonstrations, observation and feedback• Warm-ups and cool-downs (and can in include

SAQ)• Types of, structuring and running practices (part-

continuous/progressive/W-P-W) andrandom/blocked practices etc

• Fundamentals of movement (Agility, Balance and Co-ordination etc)

• Constructing a season plan• Field based fitness testing for coaches• Understanding learning and coaching styles and

developing communication• Development of metacognitive strategies in

coaching• Use of technology and technological advances in

coaching• The reflective coach• Lifestyle management and the coach• Burnout and the coach• The coach and talent identification• Nutrition and the coach• Biomechanics and the coach

SARC is a nationally recognised training

centre for many sports and qualifications.

Each year we provide a large number of

coaching courses and workshops on

which students, staff, local coaches and

teachers can enrol. This year’s current list

is published in this brochure.

We have many facilities which are used regularly forcompetitive sport throughout the week. Equally thesefacilities can be used to play recreational sports at anytime where there is a space available. The facilities areall free to book with a small equipment charge takenfor any equipment borrowed from SARC.

We also have a number of qualified fitness instructorsand personal trainers on hand to offer advice foranyone who joins the Fitness Suite during the year.

You will have the chance to join in fitness classes suchas Zumba and Circuit Training as of September 2011
