The focus of this project is making connections between the Carlton Gardens + broader Melbourne.

The design task is the development of the existing South Carlton Gardens to encourage the use of bikes.

In the development of your design, you will need to identify and consider:

1.The stakeholders affected by any changes to the Gardens

2.Any equity issues arising from these changes

3.The impact of the changes on the use, enjoyment and form of the Gardens as a whole.

The development of the scheme will include :

1. A Plan for the use of paths in the Gardens by both bike riders and pedestrians.

2. One Shared Pedestrian / Bike Path.

3. A Bike Tourist Station for the Melbourne Bike Share scheme.

4. A Landscape Feature that contributes to the enjoyment

of the Gardens in dry weather.

5. A Bike Bridge to provide safe access for riders across Nicholson Street, and to

reduce footpath congestion.

The project is in 2 parts:

The overall planning strategy, including the location of the facilities listed (Path/s + Tourist Station + Landscape Feature + Bike Bridge).

The detailed design of one of these elements. (ie. Tourist Station OR Landscape Feature OR Bike Bridge). The detailed development must explore and refine material and structural considerations, program issues, and aesthetic ambitions.

To communicate your final scheme, you will produce and use the following :

A site model (1:1000 on A3) to show the overall planning strategy, how your scheme relates to the site + how the connection between Carlton Gardens + surrounds is realized.

A presentation model to show your detailed design at 1:50 or 1:100 or 1:200, on a sturdy base (max A3) to show site form as appropriate. You can use any material. Include a ‘scale person’.

Presentation drawings to show plan, section and plan oblique / 3D views of the developed detailed scheme. All drawings should be to the same standard scale (ie. on your scale ruler), should be referenced to each other (eg section lines on the plan etc), and thoroughly describe the design. Use line weight to communicate clearly. Identify and note materials and major elements.

Use these models and drawings to clearly communicate the major strengths of your design, as well as how it satisfies the brief.

Your project must also demonstrate that you have applied the Design Skills from the first half of semester. Refer to the rubric for more information – be sure you have covered each of the 5 skills
