Principal’s Report

Congratulations to…

Amy Constant for receiving the Minister’s Award for Student Excellence last week in Sydney. Amy was one of 31 students from across New South Wales to receive this award, and we are all so proud of her achievements right across the school, across many years.

Samantha Pett in Year 8 for her receipt of the NSW Rowing Novice of the Year for 2013. Samantha received this prestigious award at Chifley Dam after a training session a few days ago. Not a bad achievement for a rower of less than 12 months experience! I encourage any student contemplating trying out rowing as a sport to approach the Central Tablelands Rowing Club, or see Mr Bolus at the school. You will be well looked after, and the opportunities are so numerous.

The many Year 11 students who nominated for the Leadership Team for 2014. The process of nomination, interview and presentation is stressful, and all of the students were confident and well spoken. We are fortunate to have such talented people stepping up each year. Results from the Captains elections will be available very soon.

Mr McFarlane and the Mind Marathon team from Denison College that blitzed the event in Sydney. To have a First and a Third in Stage 5 is amazing, and a credit to all members of both teams from across the College. The Stage 4 teams were competitive, but did not gain a place. No doubt they will perform well next year in this notable event.

Parents, students, teachers of Year 12, 2013. We are nearly at the end of a long road littered with highs and lows. I look forward to seeing you all at the Farewell Assembly, and then the Graduation Ball. Keep at the books, and stay working with your teachers right up until the exams themselves.

Have a safe and happy holiday everyone. Remember we start Term 4 on the day after the October long weekend, Tuesday 8th October.

Mock Trial Competition Round 6

In this round our team was the defence in a case of animal cruelty brought by the RSPCA. It was alleged that the defendant had neglected the welfare of her two horses. The prosecution claimed that the RSPCA visited the property in February and warned that if the condition of the horses did not improve by May then they would be seized.

It was our defence that we followed the advice of the RSPCA and obtained additional food for the horses but they still didn’t thrive. After consulting our own Vet, who ran independent tests, it was discovered that the water in the dam was contaminated. Unfortunately these test results were not available until after the horses were seized.

For this round (where we were one of the remaining 32 teams in this State-wide competition) we travelled to Dubbo to compete against Coonabarabran High School. Despite very convincing performances from our barristers, witnesses, solicitor and court officer, the magistrate ruled against us in the actual case finding we were guilty of cruelty to animals saying that we should have acted sooner to take measures to improve the welfare of the horses.

Unfortunately we lost the all-important points section of the trial by the narrowest of margins 251-253 points. This brings to an end our involvement for this year but the students are to be congratulated on their outstanding commitment to this extra-curricular activity and they have all learnt a lot about the legal process.

The team for this round was Louis Meurant and Zachery Baker (barristers), Dominic Grabham-Johnson (solicitor), Ben Geerkens and Lauren Gottschau (witnesses) and Sam Kennedy was the court officer. Cassandra Talbot was absent from this round and missing from the team photo which was taken inside the Dubbo Family Court on Wednesday 28th.

We would like to thank Ms Trish Rooney for driving some of the students to Dubbo, Mrs Stacey Jones for accompanying the team and Mr Michael Schwab for his invaluable advice throughout this competition. Diane Poole

Mind Marathon Success

On Friday 30th August Mr McFarlane from Kelso High and Mrs Bertolin from Bathurst High took four teams from Denison College to Sydney to compete in the annual Mind Marathon hosted by East Hills Boys High School. This is a full day of academic challenges in competition format that require not only knowledge but higher order thinking.

This year the format allowed teams from Stage 4 (Year 7/8) and 5 (Year 9/10) in both girls and boys. Denison College entered a team in each of these categories with students combining from each campus to comprise the teams. Students representing from Kelso High were:

Stage 4 Boys - Mark Day Joshua McInerney Ben Sennett

Stage 4 Girls - Madeleine Howle Emily Sennett Jodie Goodwin

Stage 5 Boys - Daniel Reedy Riley Single Giles Lodge

Stage 5 Girls - Breanna Clarke Sarah Hall Lauren Miles

All four teams performed brilliantly on the day and it was pleasing to see the collaboration between the campuses in forming the Denison College teams. The Stage 4 girls’ and boys’ teams both came 8th in their competition – a very good effort as they were up against many selective High Schools. Outstanding success came with our Stage 5 teams. The Stage 5 boys were placed 3rd, receiving a medallion for their efforts. The Stage 5 girls were placed 1st and received a trophy in recognition of their success.

Congratulations to all participants for your outstanding success and efforts on the day and thanks to Mrs Bertolin from Bathurst High and Mr McFarlane from Kelso High for their organisation and time. We won’t mention the flat battery on the bus caused by Mr McFarlane leaving the lights on!

Of particular note, two Year 11 students, Melissa Wells and Rhiannon Channells, have had their artworks selected for exhibition in Nagoya, Japan, for the Nagoya Sister City Exchange. This is an outstanding achievement, as artworks were selected from all public schools across NSW. On exhibition will also be works from Nagoya, Sydney, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Ninjing. All students are to be congratulated on their exceptional efforts.

Talented Year 11 Science Students Selected For National Youth Science Forum

Louis Meurant and Melissa J. Wells from Year 11 have been selected to be representatives at National Youth Science Forums (NYSF) in Canberra and Perth. These 2 students were selected along with 432 other students from 1300 applicants nationwide.

Rotary clubs around Australia work with the NYSF to select participants to attend each January. Firstly, Louis and Melissa were successful in their endeavors to receive endorsement from the local Rotary club. Next, they completed an online form, from which they were selected for an interview. In the interview they were asked questions in relation to their scientific knowledge, application to studies and communication skills. Their responses to these questions made them successful in their selection as representatives at these National Youth Science Forums.

Louis and Melissa will have the opportunity to test drive careers in the fields of science, engineering and technology for 12 days in January 2014. They will experience “real” science at a range of laboratories and workshops. They will also be able to engage with scientists from universities, industries and other research organisations, as well as other science students from across Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. From this experience Louis and Melissa will be able to make informed decisions about courses and careers in science and gain a professional skillset to help them realise their potential.

iLearn

Kelso High Campus’ program of transition for Year 6 students has been completed for Term 3 and once again it was an outstanding success. Students from over 10 feeder schools attended on Wednesdays during Weeks 5, 6 and 7 and were treated with excellent activities in Science, Languages and the circus.

The Science component this time saw the students completing investigation activities in the schools wetlands located behind G block. Under the direction of Mr Warner and his “Waterwatch” students Year 6 were able to identify creatures living in the wetlands area and undertake experiments associated with the pond life.

Sessions in the language department were undertaken under the direction of Mrs Starr and the German language was the order of the day. Students learnt many words and numbers and were amazed to learn about the origins of the castle depicted on the Disney movie promotional screen.

Students were also treated to an extended session in the circus where they were able to experience all the equipment currently used by the students of Cirkus Surreal. The favourites were the tissue and hoop apparatus, the uni-cycles and the “fast track trampoline”.

Students were also asked to complete some testing in English and Mathematics to assist with the process of creating class groups for Year 7 next year.

Many thanks to all the teachers who assisted in the development of this program and to the staff from our feeder schools for their assistance and support of our school.

CKC Cup

On Thursday, 15th August, 120 students from Years 7 to 10 participated in the CKC Cup held at Kelso High Campus and Learmonth Park. It was very pleasing to report Kelso took out the win with 55 points to Cowra’s 41 points. This is an excellent result as we have been defeated by Cowra for the last 2 years.

On Tuesday, 27th August, we travelled to Orange to compete against Canobolas High School. Again we played extremely well and managed to beat Canobolas by 52 points to 36.

All students involved should be congratulated on their behaviour, participation and sportsmanship.

They were all outstanding! It was a fun day had by teachers and students and we look forward to next year.

The points were tallied with 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 for a loss. The final results are as follows:

First place Kelso on 106 points Second place Cowra on 98 points

Third place Canobolas on 75 points

Boys’ Soccer – Mr Bolus

Years 7/8 team

Game 1 vs. Cowra resulted in a 4-1 loss to Kelso. The game was a very close and hard fought encounter. The score was 4-0 at half-time. KHS played particularly well in the second half to finish with much the better of general play. Outstanding players included, Cole Mutton, Cody Sherman and Connor Slattery.

Game 2 vs. Canobolas resulted in a 1-1 draw. Kelso High led for most of the match however, Canobolas were able to score the equaliser in the final minute of the game. Overall the team improved significantly from their efforts in the first game and are to be congratulated on their fine team effort. Outstanding players on the day included Josh McInerney, Jeremy Anderson and Cody Sherman.

Members of the team included:

Cole Mutton (Captain) Josh McInerney Cody Sherman Mathew Camenzuli Jeremy Anderson Connor Slattery Sean Hanrahan Michael Latu Dale Thompson Damien Makhoul Dominic Makhoul Dempsey Milgate Jordan Brennan

Years 9/10 Team

Game 1 vs. Cowra resulted in a 1-0 loss to Kelso High. In a very close game both teams had numerous opportunities to score. However, it was in the final minute that Cowra were able to take the lead. Bailey Webber in goal denied many scoring attacks by the Cowra team. Other outstanding players included Jeremy Judge, Lachlan Thomas and Nathan Doungmanee.

Game 2 vs. Canobolas resulted in a 2-0 victory for the Kelso High team. Kelso High were far too skilful and determined for their opposition on this occasion. Outstanding players included Jeremy Judge, Nathan Doungmanee and Brodie Piggott.

Members of the team included:

Lachlan Thomas Jeremy Judge Callum Christie Bailey Webber Nathan Doungmanee Mathew Sheard Leigh Petrie Jordan Naylor Harry Inwood Brodie Piggott Cody Donovan Leo Teichmann Travis Woodyatt Brandon Martin

Girls’ Soccer – Mr Warner

Year 7-8

The girls had a good campaign in the CKC Cup. In our first game against Cowra the team dominated the game but were unable to score finishing with a nil all score.

In our second game against Canobolas we again dominated the game with all the play being in the opposition’s half. We won the game 3 – nil.

The team was:

Emily Geerkens Claire Sheehan Emily Risch Abby Press Sarah Risch Brooklyn Schumacher Courtney Hayter Sarah Morris Emily Whittaker Larissa Kilby Amy Cosgrove Hannah Sutton Courtney Barnett Vanessa Muldoon

Year 9 – 10

The girls put up a great effort taking into account that most of the girls did not play soccer.

In our first game against Cowra we surprised ourselves by leading 3 – 1 but could not hold off a fast finishing Cowra, going down 4 – 3.

In the game against Canobolas the game was very tight, we had many chances. It took till the last minute for us to score the winning goal giving us a 1 nil result.

The team was:

Brooke Inwood Courtney Downey Rebecca Bennett Kaitlyn Kennedy Sarah Moore Minna Annand Olivia Sheehan Ebony Hotham Tamara Thompson Kelly Baker

Volleyball – Mr Sheader

In the first day of the CKC cup, Cowra travelled to us, bringing an enthusiastic group of students who were ready to take us on in both the juniors and 9/10’s. We played inside in the gym which made for a great atmosphere.

Whilst their team may have lacked the overall skill level they made up for it with their high levels of energy and enthusiasm. However, all our teams easily defeated the Cowra side, not dropping a set or many points at all. These teams have put a lot of effort into their volleyball over many years and this allowed our teams to minimise their mistakes and play consistent volleyball.

When we travelled to Canobolas we were treated to outstanding facilities, playing in the PCYC Gym. On this occasion only our 9/10 teams played. They were once again too strong for the Canobolas team and we came away with two easy wins. I was very impressed with the team’s modest and friendly attitude towards the opposition, helping them out with some basic skills before and after the game. It

was great to see both teams having so much fun whilst maintaining a competitive nature to the game.

Boys vs. Cowra

The boys team beat Cowra 2 – 0 with Toby Speer and Connor Hotham scoring the goals. The boys played well in the first half after the initial settling down period. Bree Mair stood behind the goals to give Nick Press some coaching as it was his first game playing in goal.

Thanks to Madison Tattersall and Hayley McLeay for umpiring the game.

Girls vs. Cowra

The girls had an easy win over Cowra, 9 – 0 with the goal scorers being Madison Tattersall 2, Gina Grenfell 1, Georgie Betts 1 and Kelly Baker 5.

Thanks to Mark Day and Byran Finnerty for umpiring the day.

Boys vs. Canobolas

The boys went down 7 – 2 to a well drilled team. Connor Hotham and Aaron Simmons were the goal scorers. Nick Press did a great job in goal, usually saving the first shot taken by the Canobolas forwards. Well done Nick.

Thanks to Abbie Mair who umpired the match after Madison Tattersall injuried herself in the girls game.

Girls vs. Canobolas

The girls beat Canobolas 8 – 0 after leading 1 – 0 at half time. The goal scores were Kelly Baker, Geogie Betts 2, Gina Grenfell 2, Kaitlyn Judge, Katie Gottschau and an own goal.

Debating – Miss Tucker

Debating against two unfamiliar schools with unfamiliar teammates was a challenge for the students involved in the debating. Nonetheless, the teams worked together with ease and developed strong arguments providing close scores at the end of the day. Kelso High debated well, especially in the 9/10 debate when students from younger grades were debating against other schools and came out with a win. All students involved were a credit to the school and were humble and gracious in loss.

Students involved in the Cowra visit debate were:

Chris Peachey Kylie Taylor Lachlan Smith Madeline Williams Anthony Hanrahan Giles Lodge

Students involved in the Canoboalas visit debate were:

Basketball – Mrs McFarland

The basketball results for the 2013 CKC cup were more than impressive. Over the last few years, the students here at Kelso High have shown a keen interest in basketball and our results in the cup have been the best since the cup has started.

When Cowra visited Kelso, the students all showed their passion for the sport. The 7/8 boys, 9/10 boys and 9/10 girls all won their games convincingly. The 7/8 girls were up against a side twice their size. Despite this intimidation, the girls put up a great effort and in the end only lost by 2 points.

Upon visiting Canobolas, we watched as a member of the 9/10 Canobolas boys side could slam dunk the ball. Unfortunately both boys teams lost, but the two girls teams dominated their games.

I would like to congratulate all participants who represented Kelso High in basketball at the CKC cup. Your sportsmanship and enthusiasm for the game was contagious and I thoroughly enjoyed watching each and every one of you participate in the cup and look forward to sharing the experience again with you in following years.

Year 7/8 Team

Game 1 vs. Cowra resulted in a win to Kelso 12 to 6. The game was well played with students learning new game rules. Outstanding players on the day included Mark Day and Lachlan Borg.

Game 2 vs. Canobolas resulted in a win to Kelso 28 to 0. The boys played well considering we had lost a number of our players to other sports and new students had to step in on the day.

Members of the team included:

Henry Allen Lachlan Borg Alex Cox Mark Day Chris Peachey Kurt Simpson Jay Webber Tyler Williamson Cody Grant Mitchell Russo Aiden Allen Cole Mutton Dale Thompson Joshua McInerney Connor Slattery

Year 9/10 Team

Game 1 vs. Cowra resulted in a win for Kelso 16 to 5. Students played well as a team and encouraged each other. Kieren Gilbert displayed some impressive catching in the short stop position. Game 2 vs. Canobolas resulted in another win for Kelso 9 to 5. This game was much closer and the boys had to work much harder to win the game. Nick Press and Nick Rae both played well as catcher and pitcher.

Members of the team included:

Alex Gale Kieren Gilbert Brad Hollis Connor Millis Liam Pederson Nicholas Rae Nick Press Bailey Webber Jesse Scott Leigh Petrie Brodie Samuel Kyle Burke Nathan Doungmanee Paris Sylvester

Touch Football – Ms Logan

Kelso vs. Cowra

Kelso dominated in the touch football against Cowra, winning all four games. Our Year 7 and 8 junior boys were the first to take the field. They had a hard fought game and ended up winning 5 – 4. Cody Sherman and Michael Latu were standout performers in this game.

Our second team to hit the field were our Year 9 and 10 senior boys. This side has been playing together for some years now and proved to be too strong for Cowra High. The boys ended up winning 10-1 in an outstanding game. They showed a lot of skill and pace. Bailey Waldron and Jordan Naylor both played particularly well.

Next up were the Year 9 and 10 girls. We were lacking in numbers in this game and had to get some of our junior girls to play up. Our juniors did a great job to help out the seniors and were victorious in this match. The final score was 5 -1. Kelly Baker was a dominate performer in this match.

The last game of the day was our junior girls. The girls were a little nervous before this game, with many of them never playing touch before.

However, their natural skill and pace was too much for Cowra and they won 4-1. Sarah Morris and Larissa Kilby were two of our best in this game.

Overall, a fantastic day was had by all. All students played to their best ability and showed great sportsmanship throughout the day. A big thanks must go to Kenny Turner who refereed most of the games. Well done!

Kelso vs. Canobolas

Our Year 9 and 10 boys were again the first team to take to the field. Again they proved to be too strong winning 12-1. They are a great side, with a lot of skill and pace. Well done on another outstanding performance. Bailey Waldron scored 4 tries in this game.

The junior boys were up next. Unfortunately, we went down in this game quiet convincingly. Canobolas were a lot bigger than we were and just had too much speed. The Kelso boys never gave up and tried their best until the end of the game.

Next to take to the field were the Year 9 and 10 girls. We knew that this match would be a close one, especially without one of our star players – Kelly Baker, who was out injured. Canobolas were the first to score and held a one nil lead for the majority of the match. Kelso never gave up and were able to score in the last few minutes to draw the match. Ebony Hotham and Minna Annand both played well in this game.

The last game of the day was the junior girls. This was also a very close game that could have gone either way. It was 1- all for a very long time but Kelso were again able to score in the dying minutes to steal a 2 – 1 victory. Sarah Morris and Vahnya Moore both had great games.
