Communication & Dissemination Activities
Smart5Grid project was successfully represented
by Nearby Computing partner in MWC 2021,
which took place in Barcelona, on the 28th of June
-1st of July, attracting the interest of the visitors on
the Smart5Grid use cases and the concept of
NetApps. MWC attracts some of the most
influential decision makers in the world. It’s where
2,400 leading companies and trailblazers share the
latest topics relevant to the future. For more
information you can follow this link.
Exhibition
Exhibition
5G World summit was held in London, on the
21st-23rd of September. A 5G World Event, ‘where
conversations that shape the industry take place’.
Smart5Grid’s partner, Athonet, attended the
event with a booth, as a Βronze sponsor. The
booth visitors could be informed about Athonet’s
involvement in research and innovation projects
funded by the European Commission and see the
last innovations brought by Athonet to the 5G
ecosystem, including solutions exploited within
the framework of Smart5Grid. Mr. Nanda Menon,
Director – Corporate development at Athonet and
CEO of Athonet UK, gave a speech on the Athonet
solutions for 5G and a demo. For more
information about the event follow this link.

Presentation
Dr. Irina Ciornei from UCY – KIOS CoE, participated at 5G-PPP Trials WG Plenary Meeting held online on July, 5,
2021 and represented Smart5Grid project. At this meeting, after an overview of the activities of the Trials WG,
there were three presentations about trials in newly started projects, including Smart5Grid. The Smart5Grid
presentation focused on the overall vision and goals of the project and briefly introduced the four use-cases
(demos) from the business perspective.
Presentation
ESO/EAD Partner represented the Smart5Grid project in
the Annual Energy Forum 2021, which took place in
Sofia, on 7-10th September. Mr. Daniel Shangov and Mr.
Krasimir Vlachkov, presented an overview about
Smart5Grid project during the plenary session
organized by the Scientific and Technical Union of
the Power Engineers in Bulgaria. The presentation
highlighted, Smart5Grid’s vision and main goals, the
Platform, as well as all 4 Use Cases with a special
emphasis on Use Case 3 and Use Case 4, which will take
place in Bulgaria and in Greek-Bulgarian cross borders
respectively. There was a description of their key aspects
and how the 5G paradigm can supplement and
contribute to achieving a more reliable, flexible,
predictable, and manageable grid in the context of
ever-growing RES penetration, including distributed
generation, prosumer & demand-side management
(DSM), and potential market aspects involved.

Webinar
On the 22nd of September, a joint webinar, on ‘5G Tests and Pilots’, organized by 5G-IA, and India’s equivalent
organization, TSDSI. Smart5Grid partners were invited to present the vision of the project and some testing
results as part of the Smart Grids panel, which was formed from only few “hot verticals” which were selected
as per interest: 5G Smart Grids, 5G Smart City, 5G Broadcast, and 5G Media production.
The presentation from the Smart5Grid consortium, titled “From NRG-5 Trials to Smart5Grid”, and presented
by Antonello Corsi (Engineering), Irina Ciornei (Kios, University of Cyprus), and Daniele Porcu (Enel
GI&N), started by explaining the lesson learned from NRG-5 project, which focused on PMUs virtualization
using VNF and validating the performances of 5G with comparison of 4G and Ethernet (set as benchmark).
Then, Smart5Grid has been introduced, highlighting the main evolutions from NRG-5:
1. Both Telco and Energy infrastructures are real and not simulated,
2. Smart5Grid approach is based on NetApps, that has been defined as a chain of one or more VNFs, that
can run on the Edge or somewhere in the Cloud, according to the need on performances.
3. Testbeds will be exploited by third-party experimenters, who will be facilitated by an Automatic
Validation and Verification Framework, included in the Smart5Grid architecture.
As a conclusion of the presentation, the business value of some use cases was briefly summarized, e.g. the
saving in Fiber Optic installation for covering wide areas monitoring or the increase of performance in using
virtual components (as also demonstrated in NRG-5) and/or the opportunity for standardization, e.g. in
aggregating Distributed Power Generation Resources, where there will be less and less need for dedicated
devices, by moving the computational power in the Edge/Cloud.
