PresenterPresentation NotesNow, let’s look at the 5G standardization progress. Since the the 1st Release 15 NR non-standalone at the end of 2017 (option3), 5G has been further standardized with NR standalone (option 2 and 5) to the late drop for option 4, 7 and NR-NR DC. Release 16, which has 5G base enhancements is targeting to finish 2020 spring. And now Release 17 work items to enhance 5G architecture is under discussion.

  • New Capabilities in 5G Network and Evolution (3GPP)

PresenterPresentation NotesComparing to previous generations 2G, 3G, and 4G, the 5G has very unique architectural changes. Those are number 1 service based interface, number 2 network slicing, and the last but not the least the edge computing. These new architectural aspects of the 5G provides tangible methodology for multi-industry or muti-service characteristics integration into one physical network. The edge computing, which enable very low latency such as less than 10 msec., provides new level of user experiences. In release 16, new capabilities of industrial IoT, massive IoT, automotive, and fixed mobile convergence will be included. The release 17 is expected to further enhance the capabilities of the release 16 and add the satellite and mission critical services

3GPP 5G NR access technology standardization

PresenterPresentation NotesMajor enabler access technology for the 5G based smart city is the NB-IoT and LTE-M, which are already standardized in release 13.Next level capability for access will come with NR-IoT in release 16 and 17 in align with NR standardization.

    Network Exposure Function Edge Computing

PresenterPresentation NotesMore impacting enablers for the 5G based smart city are in core network side. The network slicing gives way to provide multiple city services even with very different characteristics with optimization service by service. And the Service based interface architecture with network exposure function can provide new capabilities to the smart city service providers with open platform structure. The edge computing with 10 m sec. to even a few msec. latency gives control capability for the autonomous driving, remote robotics, and real time immersive AR/VR services.

  • 5G based Smart City Enabler – Platform

5G Based Smart City E2E platform Smart City Value Chain and Application Platform

PresenterPresentation NotesWith these 5G capabilities, you can design your smart city multi-layered platforms, which are the network & cloud platform, Smart city application platform, and the smart city service business and operation supporting platform in other words BSS/OSS. The smart city BSS/OSS together with smart city service layer can be designed to optimized for specific city based on its own characteristics and requirements and to handle quite different data protocols for each service. The city can choose its smart city application platform through IoT platform in the market either using device platform from manufacturer such as Samsung, LG, or using generic platform from Google, Amazon, or Microsoft, or using operator’s platforms.Important thing here is to keep the protocols and interfaces compatible to major international standards for future-proof, since the smart city platform will need to maintained years to tens of years.

PresenterPresentation NotesOne of the 5G Forum Smart City Committee's work to promote 5G based smart city is to write the white paper give references and guides to those who are working on smart city planning. We released the 1st version of the white paper early this year. It contains the fourteen 5G based smart city scenarios, which have wide variety of use cases in terms of category with technologies such as eMBB, massive MTC, URLLC, or in terms of user experiences category. I will not touch the scenarios one by one here because of time issue. You can find the white paper in the 5G Forum hompage if you want to see the details.

    Koera Smart City Activities

PresenterPresentation NotesWhen it comes to smart city in Korea, it has long experiences in improving city using ICT through Ubiquitous-City projects since 2003.But it was led by government project and too technology focused building ICT infrastructure. It gave very limited impact to the Korean industry and society. The smart city in Korea has renaissance in 2018 since it became the national agenda by current President Moon. It is more focused on Sustainability with innovation and growth, Citizen focused and public private partnership, which I believe is right direction. This year 2019, Korea has been workin on master-planning for two national smart city trials in Sejong and Busan. Sejong is aiming AI, data, and blockchain bsed digital city. Busan is aiming augmented city platform using robots and AR/VR.Korea has also 6 challenge projects to try specific application to solve the city problem.

5G Forum Smart City Committee has been closely working with the two national trial area to help them to prepare the 5G in the smart city mater plan.

5G, Enabler for smart city enhancement

PresenterPresentation NotesThis table shows what kind of use cases and applications can be considered to incorporate in the smart city planning depending on the 5G technology readiness. The 5G platform will provide the way to integrate vertically siloed applications to the horizontal converged multi-industry services. And it can also give citizen experiences in the city into the next level. Since Korea the 1st to deploy the commercial 5G, and is very technology early adaptor, we believe Korea also will show 5G based smart city services first to check the real value of them.

  • AUTOMATEDCONNECTED COOPERATING

5G will make smart city cooperating and automated

PresenterPresentation NotesIn conclusion, I would say, the 5G with real time machine learning and AI will transform the smart city with just connected with vertically siloed application to more cooperating and even to the city level automations.
