DELTA DEVILS RETURN TOP RUSHERSITTA BENA -- One of the biggest positives of the Delta Devils’ 2012

season is the return of their top two rushers from the 2011 season. Junior college transfers Trey Bateaste and Brandon Stansell both return for their season year as a Delta Devil.

The two combined to rush for nearly 1,000 yards last season. Bateaste, who was named preseason Second Team All-SWAC, rushed for 543 yards and three touchdowns while Stansell added 396 yards on the ground.

Bateaste and Stansell are expected to again be an integral part of the Delta Devils’ offensive scheme in 2012.

MONZON TAKING OVER KICKING DUTIESKevin Monzon, a Marietta College transfer, will take over the field goal

and extra point duties for Carlos Sanchez, who will handle the punting and kickoff responsibilities. Monzon made an extra point, but missed a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter against Alabama State last week.

Veteran collegiate coach and former UCLA standout Karl Morgan was introduced as the 15th head coach at Mississippi Valley State University on January 11, 2010. He comes to MVSU after serving five seasons as the defensive coordinator at the University of North Alabama.

Over the last five seasons Morgan has helped lead UNA to a combined 55-10 record that includes a Gulf South Conference Championship and four NCAA playoff berths. With Morgan as defensive coordinator, the Lions have a plus 82 turnover margin in the 65 games he has coached at North Alabama.

Last season, in 2009, the Lions finished with an 11-2 record and participated in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs.. The University of North Alabama placed four players on the 2009 Daktronics, Inc. All-American first team and the 2009 Associated Press Little All- America Team, led by first-team selections Michael Johnson and Montrell Craft. Johnson, a senior linebacker from Panama City, Fla., and Craft, a senior defensive lineman, were both four-year lettermen for the Lions, made the UNA Team of the Decade for 1999-2008 and had tremendous senior seasons. Johnson was also named the Ron Lenz National Defensive Player of the Year. UNA was sixth in the nation in pass efficiency defense, 11th in scoring defense and turnover margin 26th in pass defense.

In 2008, the Lions went 12-2 and reached the semifinals of the Division II playoffs. The UNA defense forced the most turnovers in the nation with 44 and picked off the most passes (32). UNA ranked fourth in the nation in turnover margin, seventh in pass efficiency defense and 14th in scoring defense (17.36). A total of seven UNA defenders earned All-GSC honors, including linemen Montrell Craft and Derrick Chatman.

In 2007 the Lions went 10-2 and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs behind a defense that ranked seventh nationally in turnovers gained and 25th in scoring defense.

In 2006 UNA was 11-1, won the GSC title and reached the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs. The Lion defense ranked ninth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 13.8 points per game. Five Lion defenders earned All-GSC honors.

In 2005 Morgan’s defense at UNA ranked among the NCAA Division II national leaders in every category and helped the Lions post an 11-3 record and reach the semifinals of the Division II playoffs. The UNA defense recovered 20 fumbles and

intercepted 21 passes as the Lions had a +19 turnover margin. Four UNA defenders received All-Gulf South Conference honors following the season, with defensive back Blake Farris named to four All-America teams. Farris and defensive lineman Lee Vickers both signed with National Football League teams following the season.

Prior to coming to North Alabama, Morgan coached at Hampton (Va.) University and Alcorn State (Miss.) University. Morgan also spent four seasons as the defensive line coach at Arkansas State University. Prior to his appointment with the Indians, he was the defensive line coach at Purdue University.

Morgan got his start in coaching as the head football coach at Central Catholic High School in Morgan City, Louisiana from 1989 to 1992. He then entered the college ranks and served as the defensive line coach at Nicholls State University from 1993 to 1994.

During the 1995 season, Morgan was the defensive line coach at Southern University. His defensive line was part of a unit that helped to lead the Jaguars to a 11-1 record en route to the Black College National Championship.

Quarterbacks

With six players vying to take the lead role, returning starter Gar-rick Jones will remain at the helm of the Mississippi Valley State offense. The senior Coahoma Community College transfer, who was hampered with a nagging ankle injury last season, returns under center hoping to pick up where he left off. Last season, the Memphis native passed for over 800 yards with seven touchdowns. Behind Jones, is a stable of athletes including senior Eddie Ivory, who played in six games last season. Other quarterbacks include Carl Davis (6-1, 180, So.), Jaylon Daniels (6-0, 180, Fr.), Jeremy Collins (6-0, 215, So.) and Marcus Randle (6-2, 218, Sr.).

Running Backs

MVSU returns one of the most accomplished backfields in the SWAC for the 2012 season. Trey Bateaste (5-9, 230, Sr.) and Brandon Stansell (5-7, 187, Sr.) combined to rush for nearly a 1,000 yards last season. Bateaste, a preseason Second Team All-SWAC selection, leads the way with the help of fullback Dytanyl Greer (6-2, 240, Sr.). Newcomer Cortez Frizell (5-10, 195, So.), who is entering his first year at MVSU after spending last season at Holmes Community College, also is competing for carries.

Receivers

Without one of the most accomplished receivers in recent Val-ley history, Paul Cox, MVSU will look to junior receiver Kenneth Dabney (5-7, 156, Jr.) and sophomore Julian Stafford to help pick up the load. Middle Tennessee State transfer Richard Drake, a three-star recruit of high school, could also be a playmaker for the Delta Devils in 2012. Dabney is the most experienced of the group, coming off a season with 29 catches for 286 yards and a touch-down. Trey Ford (5-10, 170, So.) and Donta Reed (5-10, 190, Sr.) will also be counted upon during the year.

Tight Ends

MVSU will have a big target at the tight end position this season with the acquisition of junior college transfer Jacob Avery (6-5, 240, Jr.). Samuel Martin (6-3, 220, Fr.) should also see some playing time at the position.

Offensive Line

Senior Martin Davis (6-4, 275, Sr.) anchors a line that paved the way for a Delta Devil offense that increased its rushing production from 2010. Antonio Griggs (6-1, 280, Jr.), Justin Barner (6-2, 315, Jr.), Eddie Wright (6-3, 285, Fr.) and Timothy Johnson (6-4, 360, Jr.) will also help block for one of the SWAC’s most talented back-field tandems in Bateaste and Stansell.

Defensive Line

Leployer Franklin (6-3, 270, Sr.) leads one of the most talented sections of the MVSU defense. The preseason Second Team All-SWAC selection led the Delta Devils with 72 tackles (14.5 for loss)

in 2011 with three sacks. Javaris Fritz (6-2, 245, Sr.), who led the team with 3.5 sacks in 2011 despite playing in just seven games last season, also returns for his senior year. Robert Simpson (6-4, 255, Jr.), Chmarcko Goldsberry (5-11, 280, Sr.) and Rico Shaw (6-2, 320, Sr.) will also be a part of an experienced MVSU defensive line.

Linebackers

Returning for MVSU include junior Marcus Thompson (6-0, 220, Jr.), Keven Woods (6-0, 230, Sr.) and Rico Mazique (6-1, 230, Sr.). Antonio Benson (6-1, 207, Jr.) and Jameel Franklin (6-0, 205, Jr.) will also likely play key roles for the Delta Devils this season. Thompson was second on the team in tackles last season with 57 to go with two sacks. Benson played sparingly last season and finished the year with 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss.

Secondary

Like most of the other positions on the MVSU defense, the Delta Devil secondary is stacked with upperclassmen. Marquez Floyd (5-11, 170, Sr.) and Carlos Hollis (6-0, 205, Sr.) will help lead a MVSU secondary which had six interceptions last season. Jeremy Johnson (5-9, 170, So.) and junior college transfer Kevin Eugene (5-11, 175, Jr.) also look to play an integral role in keeping op-ponents out of the endzone. Other names to look out for include Daanjeral Johnson (5-10, 165, Jr.), Kevin Haymore (5-9, 175, Fr.) and Napoleon Brewer (5-11, 200, Sr.).

Special Teams

Senior Carlos Sanchez (6-1, 175, Sr.), a Second Team All-SWAC selection, returns to handle kicking duties for the Delta Devils. Kenneth Dabney and Brandon Stansell both return and are looking to do a better job this year of positively changing field position in Valley’s favor via punt and kickoff returns.

Robinson returns to lead MVSU Athletics ITTA BENA -- A new day will soon begin for the Mississippi Valley State University Athletics Department.

At an on-campus press conference on Wednesday, Ashley Robinson was announced as the school’s next athletic director. It will mark the second stint at his alma mater after serving as the university’s athletic compliance director from 2007-08.

Robinson returns to the Mississippi delta after serving as the Assistant Vice President of Athletic Compliance and Academic Advising at Prairie View A&M University. Robinson, who previously served as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), began his duties at Prairie View A&M on April 1, 2010.

“I’ve waited a lifetime for this moment and I’m elated that this opportunity brought me back home to the place it all began,” said Robinson. “Mississippi Valley State is embedded in my pedigree and I look forward to serving the institution, community, alumni and fans.”

A native of Jackson, Miss., Robinson was a four-year letterman and is the single season and career record-holder in assists while playing point guard for the Mississippi Valley State University basketball team. Robinson also was named MVSU Athlete of the Year in 2002 and received the President's Scholar Award that same year.

In August of 2006, Robinson left his native state and began a career in athletic administration as an academic coordinator at Delaware State University in Dover, Del. Robinson helped implement a comprehensive academic support system for the department’s 300 student-athletes and was the department’s liaison to DSU’s faculty, campus academic offices and support services. He also assisted with the CHAMPS / Life Skills and Student-Athlete Advisory (SAAC) Board.

After eight months in Delaware, Robinson received the opportunity to return home as he accepted the position of assistant compliance director at Jackson State University. His duties included assisting the compliance director in eligibility, student-athlete certification and reinstatement and enforcing the compliance bylaws of the NCAA, SWAC and Jackson State. Robinson continued to advance up the compliance ranks quickly by returning to his alma mater of Mississippi Valley State as the athletic department’s compliance director in August of 2007.

During July of 2008, Robinson advanced once more as he was named the SWAC’S Assistant Commissioner for Compliance. As the SWAC’s Assistant Commissioner, Robinson supervised a NCAA Division I Collegiate Conference Compliance and Academic Service department, National Letter of Intent (NLI) program and was a liaison between the conference and the NCAA for rules, interpretations and appeals. He served as liaison to faculty athletic representatives, athletic directors and compliance directors. He also served as the conference office sport administrator for men's and women’s basketball,

track & field and volleyball in addition to event management assistance in terms of staffing, budgeting and coordinating.

Robinson is an active member of the NCAA Division I Legislative Council, NCAA DI External Advisory Group and the National Association for Athletic Compliance (NAAC). He also is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Black Coaches Association (BCA) the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) and the Mo Williams Foundation.
