2019 CIRCUS FESTIVAL On Thursday 5 August, nine students from Circus West travelled to Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School with Delroy’s Circus teachers Mr Paul Woodhead and Ms Jemima Hall. There were many highlights from the 2019 Circus Festival. The students developed their tumbling and aerial technique with thorough conditioning, they flew across the air on the flying trapeze, they juggled clubs, balls and rings, they learnt how to acro-handstand over one another on stilts and

ride a group bike! Our students are to be commended on their efforts across all workshops as they demonstrated resilience, enthusiasm, passion and dedication. Our troupe were nothing short of a unified team who encouraged each other to have a go at everything. They made new friends from the wider circus community and made their teachers proud as punch.

above: Dubbo College Senior Campus, Delroy Campus and South Campus joined with Killarney Heights to attend an after school Big Band Workshop, Concert Workshop and performance including conducting and playing advise from Dr Rob McMillan.

The three campuses joined together for an amazing band opportunity this term. We had the pleasure of being conducted by the fabulous Dr Rob McMillan who also provided us with warm ups and techniques which enhanced our playing. This was followed by a workshop with Killarney Heights the International Touring Group, where we learnt two pieces in ninety minutes and we then played alongside the group at South Campus. To finish, we collaborated with the Macquarie Conservatorium and Killarney Heights for a Big Band workshop and performance. The performance was outstanding and featured the Wellington Tin Roof Band, Killarney Heights Big Band, Macquarie Conservatorium Big Band and Dubbo College Big Band. Principal’s message……. Once again it has been a very busy term and we are pleased to report that the long awaited updating of the change rooms is now completed, they look very fresh and attractive and ready for use by the students. NAPLAN r esults are here. Delroy has achieved some outstand-ing results regarding growth. All parents and carers of years 7 and 9 are invited to attend a breakfast on Thursday 26 September at 8.00am to celebrate the NAPLAN success. DELROY’S GOT TALENT- this is where our students and staff demonstrate their performing abilities. Dancing skills, singing talent, magic tricks, musical talent, to name a few areas of entertainment. These performances are judged and prizes given to participants and for the best acts. This event will take place on Tuesday 24 September to end a very busy term. YONDR: Just a reminder that our Yondr program regarding the NO PHONE policy begins Week 1 Term 4. Please ensure you aware of the rules and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the school. TRANSITION for year 6 into year 7 has already commenced. Some of our current year 7 students visited our feeder primary schools this week to share some information about High School life. Thank you to those year 7 students and to Ms Hall and Mr Durham, who will be the Year Advisers for year 7 2020. Mrs Budden has been very busy gathering information about our incoming year 7 cohort. Thank you Mrs Budden for your hard work in preparing information for us to ensure we create a positive educational journey for year 7 2020. CLONTARF and Girls Academy continue to offer many oppor tunities to students to assist them with confidence, motivation and overall skills to maintain a positive attitude toward their education. ASPIRE NIGHT we look forward to seeing parents and carers at our Aspire Night in Term 4 on 22 October, at 6.00pm in the school hall, you will be able to see amazing music, art, photography and circus acts by our students. Thank you to all the staff, students, parents and carers and community members who help us make our school a positive learning environment for all.

YEAR 7 PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTS Thursday Periods 1 and 2, Year 7 students completed their class ensemble performance assessment in the school hall. All performances were of a high standard with the majority of students excelling beyond what they thought was their capability. Mrs Sinclair and I were super proud of all students’ efforts and the commitment they made during class lessons, and we would like to thank all parents/carers, teachers and the 9/10 Elective Music class for their support and help in congratulating the

2019 CIRCUS FESTIVAL


CAPA NEWS Term 3 has been moving very fast! There are many amazing artworks being produced at the minute, with year 8 currently completing their celebrity based Pop Art paint-ings for their practical assessment this term. The students have taken a great interest in Pop Art, learning how consumerism, politics and popular culture helped as a basis for this movement. We have also had year 9 and 10 Visual Art students looking closely into Still Life. The students have participated in numerous activities exploring mediums and genres to develop different techniques to producing Still Life art. Students have been busy with a number of activities using charcoal, ink, experimentation with paper qualities and colours, as well as pastels and paints. Through this exploration, students are to create a final assessment artwork based on Still Life. There are many fantastic artworks that have come from this unit and all students should be proud of their efforts. We cannot wait to display all their works on Aspire Night. Then there is Photography. Both Years 9 and 10 have been busy in either the classroom producing videos for ‘Video’s for Change’ (Year 9) or in the Darkroom producing more traditional forms of photography such as Photograms and Pinhole Camera photographs (Year 10). Both are found to be challenging yet rewarding in that they learn the many styles, techniques and forms of

photography.

STRIVE Class Scoop…. Year 8 Report: It seems like only yesterday when I was writing my last newsletter article, yet so much has happened since then. The bulk of assessment for the core subjects has wrapped up, with students now working towards the development of their group newspaper tasks for English. This task is due for submission on Monday 23 September (next week), with students having class time for any final refinements that need to be made. We have begun our new topic Chemical Reactions in Science (though I have included photos from our previous topic of students dissecting chicken wings to explore both the skeletal and muscular systems). This topic also provides for some interesting investigations, with students considering the implications of chemical reactions on their everyday life. In Math’s, our studies have also moved to the new topic Area and Volume. Students are encouraged to explore the real-life connections of this topic such as determining how much carpet should be ordered for a typical bedroom (area), or the amount of soil needed to fill a garden bed (volume) etc. It is important that students have their own personal calculator that they bring to class for all Math’s lessons. These can be purchased at the front office. Our study of Water in the World continues in HSIE, as does our want for rain! Our current drought provides a lot of relevant and meaningful insight into the issue of water scarcity, as well as what can be done to help manage this issue. Students will not receive homework next week or the first week back of Term 4, but can expect it to resume in Week 2. Remember, homework is provided on a coloured sheet of paper and is designed to consolidate classroom learning, allow-ing students to practice and refine the knowledge and skills being developed in class. As the term draws to an end, I’d like to thank Woolworth’s Delroy Park for their continued support of the Year 8 Strive class. I’d like to also wish students a rest-ful and enjoyable holiday break - they have certainly earned it!
