2/19- Prohibition

Following Laws regulate personal behavior Within your group discuss your own

personal opinion on each of the laws. Each member of the groups opinions must

be heard.

In an effort to protect young people from over stimulating their young bodies, the Food and Drug Administration is considering a ban prohibiting children under 18 from buying energy drinks

A school board is considering a ban on cell phones b/c their suspected link to brain cancer and the disruption they cause in class.

The federal government is considering repealing the law banning the sale of marijuana in the country.

19th and early 20th centuries, temperance* gained strength and political influence

Appealed to Progressives… why?

Temperance- moderation, personal restraint

Deliberation- Discussion and consideration of all sides of an issue.◦ Ex) The deliberations of a jury

Debate- contention in argument, dispute, controversy. ◦ ex) Debate over the best singer of all time.

January 1920-the 18th Amendment goes into effect

Prohibition-bans the sale or transportation of alcoholic beverages

Let me tell you about life before the 18th amendment was passed…Men drank too

much! They would come home mad & if the ladies

were behaving…well that’s a depressing story!

“NOBLE EXPERIMENT”

Speakeasies- were hidden saloons and underground night clubs

You had to speak quietly “easy”

Found everywhere◦ Office buildings,

stores, tearooms, apartment buildings, homes

Bootleggers- smuggling alcohol in your boots

Stores sold pamphlets on who to distill liquor from fruits and vegetables

Liquor was hid in water bottles, high boots

I often serve the Cops so I don’t get into

trouble

Because cops and judges were easily bribed with alcohol during this time organized crime became huge

Every city had gangs

We will get those

gangstas!

Put down the booze & nobody

gets hurt!

In many big cities..the cops were selling
