Parecerá curioso a alguno que en medio de la celebración del mes de la herencia hispana dediquemos tanto espacio a temas de educación. La razón es muy sencilla: la educación es la

única herramienta que podemos usar para crear un mejor futuro.

Creo que la mayoría de la gente que lee estas páginas coincidirá conmigo en que queremos tener mayores oportunidades para nosotros y para nuestros hijos, dejar atrás las múltiples razones por las que hemos venido a establecernos en este país y ver el futuro con una nueva luz. Para ello necesitamos educarnos, y además nunca es tarde para dar un paso hacia adelante. Cada cosa

que aprendamos, por pequeña que sea, nos lleva hacia esos sueños que hemos tenido.Tener la posibilidad de contar la historia de un joven que ha ganado una competencia nacional o un pastor humilde y servicial que es reconocido por su comunidad es algo que nos motiva y hace

No hace mucho la revista Times publicó en su edición de septiembre un artículo sobre el impacto de los latinos en la economía de los Estados Unidos y se mencionaba que los hispanos en

Estados Unidos manejan 1.3 trillones de dólares, lo que es igual al producto interno bruto de México, República Dominica, Guatemala y el Salvador combinados. Este poder de compra no

pasa desapercibido, claro está, ni tampoco el hecho de que los hispanos estén creando peque-ños negocios 60 veces más que los que no son latinos, pero lo que en verdad importa es cuántos jóvenes hispanos están terminando la secundaria y acudiendo a la universidad. Allí está el mayor

reto que se nos presenta por delante y al que debemos prestar más atención.

Solo un 6 por ciento de los estudiantes de la universidad de Delaware son hispanos, eso indica que hay mucho trabajo por hacer y que el esfuerzo de Aspira Delaware tiene mucho sentido en

nuestros días: lograr que más estudiantes hispanos entren a la Universidad de Delaware o a otras universidades como la Universidad Estatal de Delaware, donde escasamente sumamos el 5

por ciento de la población estudiantil. Esta meta debe ser el objetivo común de nuestra comunidad.

De aquí que nos dediquemos, edición tras edición, a tratar los temas relativos a las oportuni-dades de educación en nuestro estado, compartir los logros y plantear los retos, con la pasión del

soñador que entiende que hay que plantar la semilla para alguna vez tener un fruto, no importa cuánto tiempo esto tome.

Tenemos pues la obligación de continuar contribuyendo al crecimiento y mejoramiento de esta nuestra comunidad, siendo como somos orgullosamente hispanos.

It may seem strange to some that in the midst of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month we devote so much space to education issues. The reason is quite simple: education is the only tool

we can use to create a better future.

I think most people reading these pages will agree with me that we want to have more opportuni-ties for us and for our children, leave behind the many reasons why we have come to settle in this country and see the future in a new light. To achieve that we need to educate ourselves; also, it is

never too late to take a step forward. Everything we learn, however small, takes us towards those dreams we have had.

Being able to tell the story of a young man who has won a national competition, or that of an oblig-ing humble pastor who is recognized by the community, is something that motivates us and makes

this penman profession something entertaining and fruitful.

Not long ago Times published in its September issue an article on the impact of Latinos on the economy of the United States and mentioned that Hispanics in the United States handle $1.3 tril-lion, which is equal to the gross domestic product of Mexico, Dominican Republic, Guatemala and El Salvador combined. This purchasing power is not unnoted, of course, nor the fact that Hispan-ics are creating small businesses 60 times more than those who are not Latinos, but what really

matters is how many young Hispanics are graduating from high school and going to college.

This is actually our greatest challenge and the one we should really pay more attention to.Only 6 percent of the students at the University of Delaware are Hispanic, which indicates that

there is much work to be done and that the efforts of Aspira Delaware make a lot of sense: to get more Hispanic students entering the University of Delaware or other universities like Delaware

State University, where we scarcely add up to 5 percent of the student population. This objective should be the common goal of our community.

Hence we have devoted ourselves, issue after issue, to discuss topics related to education op-portunities in our state, share achievements and pose challenges, with the passion of the dreamer

who understands that you have to plant the seed to someday see the fruit, no matter how long this takes.

Therefore we have the obligation to continue contributing to the growth and improvement of our community, as we are proud to be Hispanic.

El Comité de la Herencia Hispana del Technical Community Col-lege de Delaware se enorgullece en honrar y dar reconocimiento al pastor Israel Figueroa por su dedicación a la comunidad.

El pastor Israel nació en Puerto Rico y se mudó a Delaware en 1996 con su esposa. Comenzó su ministerio a tiempo completo en 1998. Los dos años transcurridos entre su llegada y tener un ministerio a tiempo completo fueron extremadamente difíciles para

-mente y emocionalmente cuando realizó la transición hacia una nueva cultura, desde las trincheras de la comunidad encontró la manera de ayudar a otros a encontrar una vida mejor.

Cuando el pastor Israel llegó por primera vez a Delaware, necesi-taba desesperadamente un trabajo. Su primera entrevista de trabajo fue en Perdue Farms. Pidió tener un traductor bilingüe, pero el día de su entrevista el traductor estaba de baja por enferme-dad. Necesitaba el trabajo inmediatamente, así que hizo toda su entrevista en inglés, tratando de comprender tan bien como podía. Después de la entrevista, el empleado de recursos humanos escribió “ENGLISH” en su aplicación, y se le colocó en la línea con los trabajadores que sólo hablaban inglés. Recordando lo sucedido, el pastor Israel dijo que usó esta oportunidad para aprender tanto inglés hablado como le fue posible. A pesar de que disfrutó trabajando con los empleados, le era muy difícil aguantar la laboriosa y ardua jornada de trabajo. Le pidió a una amiga que lo ayudara, y pronto lo llamó con buenas noticias - Delaware National Bank necesitaba un cajero de banco bilingüe.

El pastor Israel fue a la entrevista, y lo contrataron inmediatamente. Amaba trabajar como un cajero de banco y recuerda cómo era el favorito de muchos de los clientes.

Mientras trabajaba en el banco, se le pidió encargarse de la Iglesia de Dios Maranatha. En aquel momento la congregación era muy pequeña, y continuó trabajando en el banco por un año más antes de irse a trabajar en el ministerio a tiempo completo. Pastor Israel Figueroa Delaware Tech Owen’s Campus Hispanic Heritage Honoree 2016

Delaware Technical Community College’s Hispanic Heritage Committee is proud to honor and recog-nize Pastor Israel Figueroa for his dedication to the community.

Pastor Israel was born in Puerto Rico and moved to Delaware in 1996 with his wife. He began his ministry full time in 1998. The two years between arriving and having a full time ministry were

as he transitioned to a new culture, he found ways to be in the trenches of the community helping

at Perdue Farms. He requested to have a bilingual translator, but on the day he went for his interview

resources staff wrote “ENGLISH” on his application, and he was placed on the line with workers who only spoke English. Looking back on it, Pastor Israel said that he used this opportunity to learn as

much spoken English as possible.

He loved working as a bank teller and recalled how many of the customers favored him.

“Es la Epoca más Maravillosa...” ¡Ah, el otoño! Es mi estación favorita del año. Imagínense, después de un verano caluroso, ahora es el momento de disfrutar de frescos amaneceres y atardeceres majestuosos. Esta es la temporada cuando el aire de la mañana se siente claro y fresco en la cara y los pulmo-nes. Es cuando empezamos a ver nuestro aliento cálido convertirse en vapor en el aire frío. No hay que olvidar cómo adorna el follaje a los árboles con sus hermosos y sorprendentes tonos cobre, rojo y amarillo, ¡es la naturaleza en su máxima expresión! Es un buen momento para relajarse y disfrutar al máximo antes de que lleguen los fríos días de invierno.

Would Your Child’s Safety Seat

Pass Inspection?Parents go to great lengths to make sure their children are safe, but when it comes to car seat safety, too frequently minor mistakes can put children

at risk without parents realizing it.

Car crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for children under the age of 14 and, accord-ing to Safe Kids Worldwide, of those children ages 8 and under who died in vehicle crashes in 2014, 26 percent were not restrained by an age-appropriate device (infant seat, booster seat or seat belt).

The Delaware State Police report that in 2015, 443 arrests were made for child restraints and that of the children under the age of 14 who were injured in a crash, 31 were not properly restrained.

1. Not using a safety seat. Whether an infant, toddler or booster seat-age child, parents should always use the appropriate child restraint system every time their children are in a vehicle. Safety

seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers according

turers. If using a seat belt, make sure it is locked to hold the seat snugly in place.

7. Not replacing seats after a crash or using one without knowing its history: Check your manual to see if the seat should be replaced even after a minor fender-bender and even if no child was in the seat at the time. Also, never buy a used car seat, and never accept a free used one unless you’re

sure that it’s never been in a crash. Even if it looks OK, there may be damages that aren’t visible. It is safer to buy a cheap, new seat than a high-end used seat. All seats pass the same pass/fail crash

1er lugar en NOAA Armando Alberto Aispuro gana el 1er lugar en la competencia NOAA

Armando Alberto Aispuro, estudiante de postgrado de Delaware State University en Recursos Naturales, ha ganado el 1er lugar por su presentación en la reciente competencia de la Adminis-tración Nacional de Océanos y Atmósfera (NOAA por sus siglas en inglés).

El Sr. Aispuro dio su presentación ganadora en el 8vo Foro Bienal de Educación y Ciencias en la ciudad de Nueva York, patrocinado por el Programa de Asociación para la Educación de NOAA con las Instituciones Sirviendo Grupos Minoritarios.

El título de la presentación de la investigación del Sr. Aispuro fue “El papel dela barrera de ecosistemas de la isla Apalachicola en apoyo a sitios de concentración de aves migratorias”.

Dicho de una manera más simple, la investigación del estudiante de postgrado de DSU contempló el estudio de la migración del pájaro cantor en conexión con las islas St. Vincent y Cape St. George, ambas situadas frente a la costa del Asa de la Florida (Florida Panhandle).

Debido a que algunos pájaros cantores eligen una ruta migratoria que va desde la península de Yucatán en México, a través del Golfo de México y hasta St. Vincent (la isla barrera más grande frente a esa parte de la Florida), Sr. Aispuro ha estudiado el papel que desempeña la isla, proporcionando un lugar donde las aves pueden encontrar descanso y alimento después de su largo vuelo. También hizo un estudio similar en relación a la parada de los pájaros cantores en la isla St. George, una isla barrera más pequeña al este de St. Vincent.

“A esto se le llama ecología de puntos de parada, que es un área relativamente nueva de estudio”, dijo el Sr. Aispuro. Mr. Aispuro gave his winning presentation at the 8th Biennial Education and Science Forum in New York City sponsored by

NOAA’s Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions.

The title of Mr. Aispuro research presen-tation was “The Role of Apalachicola

Barrier Island Ecosystems in Supporting Migratory Passerine Concentration Sites.”Said in a simpler manner, the DSU gradu-ate student’s research involved the study of songbird migration in connection with St. Vincent Island and Cape St. George

Island, both located off the panhandle coast of Florida.

“We show that birds rely on these barrier islands to gain fat and muscle to complete their migration to northern breeding grounds,”

Mr. Aispuro said. “We also show that a stopover along the Gulf coast allows birds to shift or maintain a diet in response to avail-

able resources in North America.”

Mr. Aispuro, who is from Santa Barbara, California, said after he completes his master’s degree, he hopes to land a job with either

Preserving Documents, Photographs, and Digital MemoriesLooking for a way to preserve important documents, photos and videos for future generations?

On Saturday, October 1 at 10:30 a.m., the Delaware Public Archives will present a program discuss-ing how to preserve photographs, documents, and digital memories. You will leave this program with the knowledge needed to care for and preserve your irreplaceable memories. Presented by Archives’ staff member Connor Graham, this program will include basic information and instruction on proper handling and storage of family papers, photographs and digital media to ensure long term preserva-tion and access.

Ms. Graham is a processing archivist at DPA and has worked on a number of manuscript and photograph collections including the Davis Collection, Governor Charles L. Terry Collection, Marshall Family Genealogical papers, City of Wilmington Maps and Drawings, Kent County Probates, William David Rice Vietnam War Scrapbook, the Arcada Fleming McCoy Photograph Collection, and the Glenn Rude Glass Negative Collection. She also curates DPA exhibits and digitizes collections for online access. Ms. Graham will graduate with her Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a concentration in Archival Studies in December 2016.
