It is official, please congratulate AP Mr. Bobby Pruett as the next DeLaura Middle School Principal.

Mr. Pruett will take over the helm on July 1st and I am confident he will do amazing things for the students

and DeLaura communities. Many thanks to DPO officers, R. Weitz – Pres., M. Christensen – V. Pres.,

D. Owen – Treasurer, E. Carmer- Secretary and S. Carvalho- Volunteer Coordinator for their con-

tinued support throughout the year with coordinating events, volunteers, and special events on and off

campus. Kudos go out to the volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for assist-

ing with the “Adopt and Island” event on April 18th. School and church volunteers worked together to

weed, trim, clean and spread mulch on the south side of the school. What a difference this landscaping

event made for our school. We had over 50 people show up to work. Great Job!

On May 21st, Winston Scott, Captain Ret. and NASA Astronaut, will be our guest speaker for the 8th

grade assembly. Parents of 8th grade students, you are invited to attend the assembly to hear Captain

Scott speak. This will take place in the SHS Auditorium at 2:30pm. Please check in through the front of-

fice prior to attending. Final registration materials go home this month and will need to be returned prior

to the end of the school year. Completing these and other documents will expedite your student registra-

tion process in the fall. The 2015-16 DeLaura registration day is set for Thursday, August 6, 2015 from

8am – 4pm with the first day of school beginning on Wednesday, August 12th.

The Academic Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, May 7th in the Satellite High School Auditori-

um. During the program and in front of a “full house“ we honored 224 of our amazing students handing

SHARK TEAM

Ms. Vaughn - Science

Welcome to the end of the school year and saying goodbye to Middle School! During the month of May, Sharks will comple the 8th grade science curriculum with Chapter 13, Energy, Matter and Living Things. We will also hold a brief unit on Human Sexuality from May 18th - 22nd. A letter was sent home with your son or daughter. Please sign and return if you haven’t already done so. The Human Sexuality Parent Letter is also posted to Edline, if you need an extra copy. Exam dates are posted to Edline and the last day for stu-dents is June 1st.

Ms. Mitchell—Language Arts / Mass Media

In Language Arts, students are working on the Value of Work collection. We are exploring poetry, argumentative articles, and fiction about the value of work.

In Mass Media, we are working on the Call of Scotties literary and arts maga-zine. We are going through hundreds of submissions.

Ms. Herosian - History

Hero's 8th grade history sharks have mastered the art of the DBQ essay! They just finished their 6th (or 7th) document analysis packet and outline pag-es. Next year, when a history teacher says, "let's write a DBQ", the sharks won't groan and roll their eyes - they'll say, "yeah! bring it on!"

So very proud of how much they accomplished! Good luck!

SEA STAR TEAM

Ms. Oswalt - Science

Classes took the FCAT science test after spending 2 weeks reviewing infor-

mation from 6th and 7th grade standards. I think most students felt pretty con-

fident about their performance on the test. We are now working in chapter 13

and learning about photosynthesis, cellular respiration and cycles of matter. We

will finish up the year by learning to use microscopes and will do the required

human sexuality unit before exams. I know we are all counting down the days,

but we’re not done yet, so keep up the good work.

Ms. Twadell’s

Multiple Disciplines

Classes have been hard at work this month! In math we have been ex-ploring the angles of triangles, fractions, and solving real world word problems. Our Science classes are honoring Earth Day by learning about the water cycle and the three “R’s : re-using, reducing, and re-cycling. In Language Arts and History we are r e a d i n g t h e book, Alcatraz by C.J. Henderson and watch-ing the documen-tary Exploring Alcatraz. This ties in with our study of the Constitu-tion and legal system.

Students- Even though the school year is com-ing to a close, please re-member to always come to school with pencils, lined paper, and a book for silent reading!

MARLIN TEAM

Ms. Roselip - Science

This has been such a great school year! It has been a privilege to teach your

children science and I thank you for your support at home. Students are learning about DNA, heredity, and genetic engineering. Students will be revis-

iting their “Time Capsule” during the last weeks of school. During the first week of school back in August, each student contributed information regard-

ing their current height (practicing measurement), favorite food, best friend, favorite book, artist etc. We then sealed the information for the remainder of

the year in a secure location in my classroom. Students will revisit this infor-

mation in May and will be able to compare how much growing they have done this year. Thank you for keeping your children focused on high academic

achievement during these last few weeks of school. Good luck in 8thgrade!

Ms. Wells - Language Arts

We have completed the first part of our Hitler Youth unit and are now cur-rently reading The Outsiders. We will also study some poetry using song lyr-

ics, limericks, haiku, and a special poem that is from the novel.

Students have been asked to keep all the Semester 2 assignments as this work will be used to help study for the end of the year test. Please make sure that

your child comes to school with needed supplies such as pencils and paper.

We have seen a rash of students who continually come to class and borrow materials on a daily basis. Please help us in this area.

Students/Parents remember the need to read for at least 30 minutes nightly

to achieve the AR Point goal. This is much of the homework in Language Arts.

AR Points are part of your child’s grade.

Additionally, if your child owes fine money, please have them pay it. It will affect the registration process if these fines are not paid. Click the Media Cen-

ter tab on our school’s Edline page to find out more.

Please continue to check Edline calendar regularly for homework due dates. If

your child is telling you they have none, you can be reassured when you check the calendar for future (and past, in the case of absences) assignments any-

time! Click on Calendar to access this data.

ROCKET TEAM

Ms. Austin - Science / Science Research

Students will be learning about genetics and biotechnology. Students will be preparing for a classroom debate and extracting DNA. Please continue to check Edline for grades and upcoming weekly activities.

In Science Research, students are working on the Amazing Race and creating their own inventions. Several students are competing in the Broadcom Online Science Fair so we wish them the best of luck. Start brainstorming some project ideas for next year : )

SEA TURTLE TEAM

Ms. Krueger - Civics

Please don't forget to watch a nightly cram session and follow up with some EOC questions on the Escambia website. The links are all on Ms. Krue-ger's edline page. You will not regret the time you spend watching these and completing the corresponding questions.

Ms. Nagy - Lanuage Arts

Both Advanced and Regular LA classes are fully into their novels! There are some big final projects attached to these novels- so please stay tuned to Ed-line! Exam reviews will also be posted to Edline mid-May. As always, if you have any questions, please email me. Thank you!

Mr. Johnson - Science

Classes are in the 4th quarter and almost at the 2 minute warning of the school year with just two chapters, 12 and 13 to complete. We are then going to study for the now semester exam that will cover chapters 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, and 14. We will review for at least 5 days, maybe more, prior to the test. It’s been a sensational school year and a real pleasure to have your child in the classroom. I sincerely thank all the parents for their support of their child. Thank you again, Mr. Johnson.

MANTA RAY TEAM

Ms. Westcott- Science

Our last unit of study will be Human Sexuality May 18-22. Students must bring in their permission slips before May 5th with parent choice indicated on permission slip. Last day of school is Monday June 1, 2015. Students and parents, have a restful and safe summer!

Aerospace - Did we really go to the Moon, or did NASA fake the Moon land-ings? We will join up with the Mythbusters as they explore some of the key ele-ments of popular conspira-cy theories. Also this month, we will be celebrat-ing the many achievements of the Space Shuttle; dis-cussing the future of both government and commer-cial space travel; and de-signing a future 3D Launch Complex before buckling down for the Semester Ex-am. An Exam Study Guide will be provided and re-viewed in class prior to the exam.

Ms. Jones - Pre-Algebra and Geometry honors have been working through their curricu-

lum as well as preparing for their FSA or EOC testing. All students are encouraged to do

their personal best on these rigorous tests. Location lists have continued to be shared on the

student Edline.

Ms. Faust - Algebra Honors students are finishing Module 17: Quadratic Functions and

preparing for the Algebra EOC. Algebra I students are finishing Module 16: Solving Quad-

ratic Equations, and also preparing for the EOC. All students take the EOC between May 4-

11th. Completing Algebra Nation will help benefit both Algebra student's grades and to study

for the EOC. All students will end the year with the Statistics unit as their final test in Alge-

bra. Study for that EOC!

DeLaura Places at Math Bowl

Eight DeLaura students competed at the District Math Bowl Saturday, April 18. Represent-

ing Math 2 Advanced, we had David Kearns and Michaela Thomas. Our geometry team con-

sisted of Alaina Smith and Wyatt Jones, who both played a role in coaching the team at the

weekly practices. Our Algebra 1 team: Audrey Ballard, Kelly Carmer, Blake Coyle, and Mag-

gie McMahanTeam, placed 3rd in the district for the written portion of the competition.

They each earned ribbons and their trophy will be displayed in the DeLaura trophy case for

years to come. Mrs. Kledzik, the team sponsor, is so proud of all 8 for a job well done!

A Few Words From The Mayor About ART…

Art student, Julia Kaye & Art Teacher, Ms. Thacker were congratulated by Mayor Kathy Meehan & the Water

Department Official Jennifer Wilster at Melbourne’s City Council meeting April 28th while Julia’s proud fa-

ther, Gary Kaye, snapped the photo. Julia’s artwork won First Place in the Water Droplets Poster Competition

& a $45.00 monetary award. De Laura is very proud of Julia & her achievement. Julia is also entering the

Space Coast Art Festival’s Poster Competition. This award has a $500 cash prize. Good Luck Julia.

Also in April, 8th grade Art student Amber Breese won Honorable Mention for her 3D Fiber Art Sugar Skull

pillow in the Brevard Public School’s Student Art Show. Other students also had work entered; Lindsey

DeGrie, Velouria Loya & Allie Neil.

It has been a very productive & successful year for De Laura’s Art students & Ms. Thacker would like to extend

her gratitude to all the hard working & talented students she has had the privilege of teaching this year.

LITERACY NEWS …

All library materials are due on 5/8/2015. Please ensure your child turns in all of their library

materials to avoid overdue fines. If you have a question regarding any overdue materials or

fines, please feel free to contact our library staff at 321-779-2000 x3012.

Summer Reading Program-

Attention all rising eighth grade students. Our summer reading has just been announced!

PLEASE SEE p.8 FOR DETAILS and encourage your child to read as many books from

the list as possible. They can earn valuable extra credit as well as double AR points to use

throughout the upcoming school year.

Espanol 1:

Can you believe it? It’s “el fin” of the year. We have learned so much in Español 1! But don’t

have a fiesta yet . . . we still have 2 more chapters and an EOC exam before we get off for

“vacaciones.” In our last chapters we will be making dioramas of our “casas ideales” and

comparing them. We will be learning how to formulate “ing” sentences in the present pro-

gressive and reviewing how to use Stem-Changing verbs. Finally we are hitting the past tense!

Then it’s EOC time. They have received the study guide for the EOC vocab as well as all the

grammar concepts we learned in class. There is also a quizlet practice website posted on Ed-

line. We have taken and will take more EOC practice tests to prepare us for the big test day

(last week of school during normal exams).

Español 2:

Yo estoy muuuuuuuuuuuy triste :( You are all going to leave me for escuela secundaria. I

have loved being your teacher and will always have a special place in my heart for the first

kids I have had 2 years in a row. Parents, as you have probably heard, the official EOC has

been canceled, but I am still giving my own teacher-prepared “EOC” or final exam. It will not

be easy, so the kids still have to study. In the final days of Spanish 2, we will be speaking and

listening A LOT. The class is now completely taught in Spanish the entire period (even the

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate DeLaura Middle School’s Odyssey of the

Mind team, who competed at the state level on Saturday, April 11th, at the University of Cen-

tral Florida in Orlando. They had previously competed at the regional level on March 7th,

where they placed 3rd out of the fifteen teams in their division. The top three teams in each

division were invited to compete at the state level. Out of the 18 state teams in our division,

DeLaura placed 8th overall. This is quite a feat considering it was most of the students’ first

time participating in Odyssey of the Mind. Also, our team didn’t get started until January,

where most teams started working in October. Needless to say, I am quite proud of the team

which includes: Madison Edwards, Maya Grossman, Victoria Harness, Emma Kliem, Deegan

Tarrillo, Grace Weston, and Bry White. The team and I would also like to extend a huge

THANK YOU to Mrs. Lara Tarrillo, who graciously donated her weekends and even vacation

time in order to prepare students for the competition. We couldn’t have done it without her!

Physical Education

May 22, 2015: The last day students will dress out for Physical Education class. Physical Educa-

tion lockers will be cleaned out at the end of each class period. Students are encouraged to

bring a bag/backpack to take all items home. Any 8th grade student may donate their Physical

Education uniform to DeLaura via the Physical Education Department.

YEARBOOKS

There are only a few yearbooks left! To purchase your copy, please send $55 cash or check

made out to DeLaura in an envelope to the Front Office, with your child’s name on the outside.

Books will be distributed during the last hour of the day May 21st. To see if your copy has been

reserved, check the list outside of guidance. This list is updated weekly.

2016 Yearbooks will be on sale starting August 1, 2015 for $40. You can purchase your copy at

the pre-sale rate via the online link (posted on Edline 8/1/15) or by stopping by the yearbook

table at registration. Students are GUARENTEED 3 appearances minimum in every yearbook-

so don’t miss out on this great sale price! Please note: yearbook purchases made with a check

must be separate from other registration purchases (ie: planner, PE uniform, etc.), so please

plan accordingly. Payment plans and recognition ads will also be available at that time. If you

Basketball Information for DeLaura Middle School 2015 - 16 School Year

Open Gym will be held on the 2nd and 3rd day of school. This is an opportunity for Student/Athletes to have

fun and a chance for Coaches to get to know those trying out.

Boys Before School 7:30 – 8:30AM Girls After School 4:30 - 5:30PM

Tryouts will begin on the 4th day of school. Tryout length will vary based on the number of participants.

Exam schedule can be found on the next page, posted on Edline and sent out on Kibbles N Bits. There

will be no early exams. Students who are absent and miss an exam, will need to make arrangement with-

in the first two weeks of the summer to come in and take the exam.

Pre-Registration materials for the 2015-2106 school year will be going home to all current 7th graders in

the next week or two. All of those forms need to be returned to your child’s Civics teacher. Getting these

forms completed and turned in prior to the end of this school year will give you a fast pass and allow you

to bypass those stations during our registration in August.

Registration for the 2015-2016 school year will be August 6th from 8:00am – 4:00pm in the cafeteria.

Volunteering builds your child’s awareness & respect for others

Volunteering in the community is more than a nice thing to do. Community service provides your middle

schooler with valuable learning opportunities. It can also broaden his/her horizons and give him/her a

better understanding of things around him/her. By performing community service, your child may:

· Gain new insight. Does your child think “the poor” all fit a stereotype? To him/her are “the home-

less” all the same? Working with them could help him/her see that they’re people just like he/she is. And

that may lead him/her to respect them more.

· Become more connected to the community. Your child’s world likely revolves around school, home

and friends. But helping out in the community may widen his/her world a little. And, hopefully, that

“widening” will also boost his/her awareness of –and sympathy for – others!

Best of luck to all 8th grade students. Go forth to high school and make great choices. The next four years

will fly by, so be sure to learn as much as you can.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Each year the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) surveys parents of children with an Individual

Education Plan (IEP) to determine how well your child’s school is partnering with you and promoting

your involvement in your child’s education. The Parent Survey for the 2014-15 school year is availa-

ble through May 31, 2015 and is being conducted primarily online ( http://www.esesurvey.com ). This

survey is to be completed by parents whose child or children have an IEP. Parents who have more

than one child with an IEP should complete the survey for each of their children. If you need a paper

survey, please call (321) 633-1000, extension 562 with the number of surveys that you require. Paper

surveys are available in both English and Spanish. Your feedback is important in helping the state and

local school systems continue improving educational programs for children with special needs.

CAFETERIA NEWS

We are fast approaching the end of the 14-15 school year – hard to believe it’s coming to an end! It has

been a joy to see all of our students over the course of the year and to have been able to offer them

healthy meal choices.

Our café continues to offer a variety of entrée items daily as well as fresh fruits, vegetables, low fat

milk and dessert items. We can even meet the needs of our vegetarian students with a variety of items.

Our middle school students are at a crucial stage of development and the end of year/course testing is

ongoing. It is important to make sure they eat a nutritious breakfast and lunch to sustain and increase

their learning capacity.

Breakfast is offered daily at no cost to the students. Please encourage your child to stop in and grab a

bite to eat before hitting the books for the school day. Prepayments in the form of cash or check are ac-

cepted daily during breakfast and lunch periods. Due to the end of the school year approaching, checks

will only be accepted through the last week of May 2015. You may continue making payments online

at www.mypaymentsplus.com using a credit or debit card. When making payments online, please al-

low 24 – 48 hours for the funds to post to your student’s account.

Any funds remaining at the end of the year will roll over to next year or follow your student to any

Brevard County Public High School.

Any questions in regards to the breakfast or lunch programs should be directed to the Café Manager at
