What a crazy way to start September! As I sit at home waiting for everything to blow over, my focus is on the months ahead of us. After all, we are still Del Webb Orlando, hurricane or not, weather won’t get in the way of our pursuit of fun. We may be missing bingo this time around, but once Dorian passes, as long as we have power, my goal is to move ahead with events, etc. as planned. Powerlines willing, we will be having our FIRST EVER Quarterly Lifestyle Social! I’m so excited to host team trivia with a pizza themed twist on Friday, September 6th. Sign up on the portal so we have a headcount for the evening. September 7th marks the first of our Fall Entertainment Series. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock with the 1969 Band, a talented group straight out of the era that will transport you back to the days of love and peace. Dig out your bellbottoms and Birkenstocks, the 60s are coming to Del Webb. We have two Disney speakers this month, thanks to Richard Palazzo and the Garden Club, we will have horticulture

speakers talking about the work and care that goes into the numerous living works of art throughout the theme parks and resorts. Teri Hardin, brought to us through the efforts of Mickey

Baus, will join us later in the month to tell us about her 30-year career with the Jim Henson Company and time as a concept artist for Disney. Our very first Titanic lecture, the 100th Anniversary Memorial Titanic Cruise and Tales of Titanic will be held Tuesday, September 10th. Steve Mattis is a

renowned speaker and travels worldwide sharing his passion for the Titanic. Each lecture is one of a kind, so check out the breeze and the portal for dates and topics. Packages for the series close on September 10th.

NFL Sunday Ticket also begins this month on September 8th! We’ll pop some popcorn and divide the clubhouse to show mainly out of market games for the entire community. Game locations will rotate, one team will not always have the big screen. However, wherever your team is, you will be informed by the Friday prior where each game will be played. Up for registration this month, we have Holiday Ball, Oktoberfest, Holiday Craft and Gift Show, Vets4Vets Bocce Tournament and Chili Cook-Off, and Diwali. Also, all individual Fall Entertainment tickets are now available. With the large number of

package tickets sold, space at these events can be limited, so claim yours now! Lastly, a big thank you to those who helped us prepare the clubhouse and surrounding amenities. It would have taken days for the staff to tackle all of that alone. It warms the heart to see people helping one another and highlights that the spirit of this community is one of support and kindness. All the Best!

HOA Update with Courtney Lynn Happy September Del Webb Orlando! I’d like to start my article by giving a THANK YOU to all the volunteers and team members who helped around the community in preparation of Hurricane Dorian. From breaking down the Ballroom (in record time!) to shoveling and stacking sandbags, this process would not have gone as smoothly without each of you. So, to all the preparation volunteers, team members and our Block Captains, thank you, thank you, thank you. We have such kind and understanding homeowners who are eager to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

At the August 16th Board Meeting, a new management company was approved for Del Webb Orlando. Starting September 1, 2019, the new management company is FirstService Residential. FirstService Residential is the leading residential property management company in North America and is dedicated to helping every community thrive. FirstService employs over 15,000 associates who are passionate about the success of every community they serve and will add 9 associates to that amazing team. Del Webb Orlando will have a new management company, but you will still see all our friendly faces around the Clubhouse! Over the next several weeks, we will be sharing new contact and resource information with our residents. We ask that everyone is thoughtful and understanding during this changeover period for all of us. If you would like to learn more about your new management company, please visit their website (www.fsresidential.com). Again, a BIG THANK YOU to all our hurricane preparation volunteers, team members and Block Captains. Now, with that said, I would greatly appreciate your help when the storm passes and it’s time to get the community back to normal

DWO Transition Committee The Transition Committee Chair had the opportunity to report to the Board of Directors at their meeting on August 16, 2019. As reported, the committee is currently in the data gathering phase having submitted 56 data set requests to management and the developer. Approximately 20% of those requests have been satisfied. As the data is coming in the committee’s Documents Team is organizing it in the master storage repository and creating a master index for ease of access. The analysis and validation of the data is in the beginning stages and there are no results or recommendations available yet. The committee held a session with the current DWO HOA legal counsel to better understand the legal requirements of HOA transitions in Florida. Barb Demers, Chair, DWO Transition Advisory Committee

Communications Advisory Committee

The Communications Advisory Committee (CAC) continues to meet monthly and needs help from you, our residents. DWO has many different ways to communicate with each other but we need more input/questions from residents. We have a lot happening here regularly, and even more now with a new management company and our ongoing transition away from Pulte. Please let us know what questions you have by using our dedicated email address: [email protected]. Each of us on the committee (George Vamos, Larry Artim, Jim Setaro)has access to this email and we can respond promptly if we know the answer, or at least let you know that we are working on your question. As well, we invite you to attend any of our monthly meetings to ask your question or express a concern. Our next meeting is Tuesday, September 10 at 9am in the Clubhouse—I’ll be glad to buy you a coffee/tea. Keep communicating Ken Lindberg CAC Chair

Safety Advisory Committee

Hurricane season is here. Is your household prepared? The Safety Advisory Committee and the Community Association Manager have collaborated on the development of a new Hurricane Preparedness Plan Guide for the community. The updated Guide is posted on the portal under Association Information, Safety Advisory Committee. The Guide includes information on topics such as preparing a hurricane/disaster supply kit, preparations that will be made at the clubhouse prior to the hurricane and guidelines for safety and cleanup after the storm. Please take time to read the Guide BEFORE the next hurricane warning is issued.

Monthly Resident FAQ

If you would like to submit a question to the Communications Advisory Committee you can find the form

at the clubhouse or a fillable version on the portal under the Resident Resources tab. You are also

welcome to email CAC at [email protected] any time!

Sales Blitz Farewell. It’s time for me to say goodbye to all of you. Working at Del Webb Orlando for the past seven years has been a wonderful experience. I am so thankful for this opportunity. I have enjoyed helping many of you with the purchase of your new Del Webb Home and have made many lifelong friends. I am leaving with memories that I will cherish forever. My new adventure takes me to the brand new Del Webb Nocatee in Ponte Vedra, Florida. I hope if you are ever in my neck of the woods you will stop by and visit me. My email and phone number will remain the same since I will continue to work in the North Florida Division. Sales update- We have 98 new homes remaining in Del Webb Orlando including four inventory homes for quicker move in dates. These homes feature the latest trends in flooring and countertops. This is an excellent opportunity to lock in low interest rates and be settled in before the holidays! We have 17 Builder Choice homes permitted which offer our customers the opportunity to select their interior finishes at our Design Studio and allow construction to begin immediately, which shortens the move-in time frame to approximately 90 days. The new golf cart path lights have been installed and will open officially soon! As a reminder, if you refer a friend or family member and they purchase a new home in Del Webb, you will receive a referral check in the amount of $250.00 to the club of your choice. If you do have family and friends interested, please reach out to your DWO sales person and we will arrange for day passes and ambassadors. We are grateful for your continued support.

Sincerely, Diane Armstrong

Mah Jongg Club Many people have played the matching game of Mah Jongg on a computer. However, there is a different way to play this game, derived from ancient China. The DWO Mah Jongg Club plays by the rules set by the National Mah Jongg League in 1937. Each year, the league changes the playing card slightly to add more interest to the game that is played by millions throughout the world. We use the 152 tile set. The tiles are divided into five groups: Winds, Dragons, Suits (Bam, Crak and Dot), Flowers and Jokers. Interested in learning how to play? Please contact Carol Overdahl ([email protected]) or Melodye Leis ([email protected]), who will organize a teaching group. Or, come by during regular play times and observe the game, see if Mah Jongg is something that interests you. We play on Mondays from 10:30-12:30, Tuesdays 6:30-8:45, Wednesdays 2-4, Thursdays 1:30-3:30 and Saturdays 2-4. Most days we play in the Lago Room. Any questions? Pickled Webbers News August was a special month as several of our Members participated in some Florida Pickleball Tournaments. One tournament was an AAU National Tournament held in Orlando. Patrice Lui, along with a friend took Gold in a 4.5 rated mixed doubles, 50+ age group as well as Bronze in a 4.5 rated open age group. But the news doesn’t stop there as in this same tournament, Michael Moosberger and Steve Nevarez took Silver in the Men’s Doubles, 3.5 rated, 50+ age group. A week before that, Steve and Michael also participated in the Tampa Bay Open and took Silver in the Men’s Doubles, 3.5 rated, open age group. Congratulations on this great accomplishment! Pickleball 102 Clinics for our Pickled Webbers Members are the first four Monday’s in September. These short 30 minute clinics are designed for our Members that want to work on improving their skills. For those residents that want to learn how to play Pickleball, the plan is to offer a series of Pickleball Clinics. Probably one series will be offered in November and another in January or February. Stay tuned for more info on this. Submitted by Dick Grosek, President of the Pickled Webbers

Recipleasers Is It Authentic?

We often say “This is authentic. It’s the same as the original.” But is it? Spaghetti and meatballs in tomato sauce… This is a standard Italian dish. It is one of the “comfort” foods and is readily offered in Italian restaurants in America. However, our version of this dish is NOT the authentic version found in Italy. American meatballs are large balls of ground beef which contain bread crumbs, eggs and Parmesan cheese. They are served over a plate of spaghetti that is covered with marinara sauce. In Italy the term “meatballs” is something entirely different. The meatballs are smaller. They are the size of a golf ball or a marble. They are called polpettines.

These meatballs are made in the home and usually not served in restaurants. The ratio of meat and breadcrumbs differ between American meatballs and authentic Italian meatballs. Instead of using eggs and bread crumbs, the Italians usually use bread crumbs made from crumbled stale bread soaked in milk to soften the polpettines. Lastly the meat can be minced beef, lamb, pork or even fish. They are served alone or in soup. From 1880 – 1920’s Italian immigrants came to America. The majority of them where from the impoverish areas of Sicily and its surrounding neighbors. With more income in America, meat was no more a luxury, but affordable. The meatballs grew from golf ball to baseball size. The ratio of1:1 of bread crumbs and meat also changed. More meat was added and the American meatball became a larger and denser sphere. Tomato sauce is an important item offered in Italian American restaurants. This marinara sauce originates from Naples. It comes from the word marinara, meaning sailor. This sauce, called marinara, is made quickly by using garlic, oil and tomatoes. It is recorded that as soon as the mariners were spotted returning home, their wives made the sauce. The Italian use of this ‘” sailor sauce” spread in America because canned tomatoes and spaghetti were the only items needed for this sauce offered in grocery stores. Now for the spaghetti part of the dish. Throughout the centuries, spaghetti in Italy was eaten as an appetizer. But Americans wanted a starch (like potatoes) to accompany their protein (e.g. meatballs). Seizing the opportunity, early Italian restaurants used spaghetti to satisfy the American appetites. It was a hit! The Italian American dish of Spaghetti and Meatballs in

Marinara Sauce was born! Although Spaghetti and Meatballs is not an authentic dish in Italy, it is still enjoyed in America. Stepp’n Out The Snowbirds will soon begin migrating back to their Del Webb winter home and the year is winding down. For STEPP'N OUT, that means it is time to choose day trips for 2020! Please join us on Wednesday, September 18th, at 12 noon in the Ballroom when President Ken Overfield will present the possible day trips for members to vote and choose their favorites. In addition, the final payment for the October trip “Vero Beach Treasures” is due. Definitely don't miss the “bus” for this important meeting.

Tri-State Club Unfortunately, the August weather patterns forced the postponement of the Tri State pizza pool party at DWO. A big thanks goes out to Amy and Jim Setaro for coordinating this event. We look to reschedule the 50 - 60 Tri Staters later in the year. On September 25th 20 Tri-Staters will enjoy a New York Yankee game at Tampa, from the comfort of a skybox. Pete Piantanida is coordinating this one. The ballgame will be closely followed by 40 Tri-Staters attending the October 11th Universal Lowes Portifino Harbor Nights, co-coordinated by the Mika's and the Giannetto's, thanks to both of you. October 4th is the date for the rescheduled WDW pontoon boat Halloween fireworks display, Fran Farrell is putting this event together. Thank you Fran... Thinking ahead to 2020 the Tri-State club will be offering three events in conjunction with the Shalom Club. An Aretha Franklin tribute January 11th followed by Havana Nights February 22nd. Thank You to Lois and Grant Rowe for arranging this joint club opportunity. Bob Gerber is getting the details form a Amazon / Walmart distribution center tour. This should be very interesting. The balance of planned events is listed, but remember you must join the Tri-State club to participate (No Dues and you will receive email notifications of future events). 2019 / 2020 events: • August 19th Pool / pizza party. Impromptu events can always be added (and they are) ,but you must be a Tri-State member to receive Email event reminders. Please remember, if you wish to participate in any Tri-State events you must be a member of the club, fortunately, that's very easy. Once in the Tri-State page, just join. (NO DUES) and any DWO resident, regardless, of where they lived is eligible to join. Equally important to membership are the coordinator volunteers. They make the club what it is! We are always seeking new event ideas and folks to coordinate them. This might be of particular interest to our working residents and snowbirds. If you volunteer to coordinate an event you get to pick the event and date of the group outing. The Tri- State officers will be happy to assist you when you coordinate an event. Remember, the dynamics and success of our club is directly attributable to our terrific members Please note, that being a trip coordinator is not as difficult as you might think. The club officers will help with portal setup, payment methods and general advertising of the event. Your task is essentially, to work out a date / time for the event, and if possible try to secure a group discount. Most venues are very receptive to having 30 - 50 people visit their establishment. Remember, events don't only have to be dinner or shows, anything where a group of people can get together and have fun will probably work. If you have any questions or events you would be interested in (and willing to coordinate) please contact any of our officers.

Vets4Vets Club The Vets4Vets Club would like to thank the Del Webb Community for its support of our events in 2019. Welcome Club

WE ARE BACK! The Welcome Club took a much needed Summer Break in July but in August we rolled back into our regularly scheduled meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Perfect time to come down to the Ballroom in the Clubhouse for a few cookies and a little networking with new neighbors! And you might just learn something about the Central Florida area as well. The Welcome Club is preparing a great line up of topics this fall to help all the new neighbors feel right at home. We know we have plenty of new neighbors moving in all the time! From the Vista Bella section which is building like crazy to resales in every other Vista. If you are a current resident and see someone new moving in, reach out to them, tell them about this meeting on Sept 17th at 6:30 p.m., and you could even join them for the evening – we do have cookies! On Sept 17th, guest speaker Jeanie Baier from the Polk County Welcome Center (the one you pass on 27 by Racetrack) will be sharing details about everything that makes Polk County a great place to live, shop, socialize and enjoy culture (yes we have museums and theaters!!). She always provides an interactive presentation and brings plenty of handouts! She’ll answer any questions you might have about ANYTHING Polk County. Other upcoming topics include exploring local Wineries and Breweries and information about Christmas happenings around the area. Stay tuned!

Charter Club Advisory Committee: CCAC The committee was created to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors, Lifestyle Director, and the Community Association Manager. The purpose of this committee is to

provide oversight to the Del Webb Charter Clubs and to the various Special Interest Groups. We hold a monthly meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 2 PM, which is open to the community to attend and listen.

DWO Clubs All Hands on Deck Hand & Foot Card Club Hand & foot is a card game similar to Canasta ,Ideally it is played at a table of 4, with partners, but can be played with 3, 5, or 6 at a table. We do play with D.W.O rules but very easy to learn. We play every Monday from 1:00-3:00 and every Thursday from 6:30-8:30 (try to show at least 15 minutes early). Come join us and have some fun. For any questions, contact DAN LITTLEFIELD @ 901-825-7974 or show up at one of our sessions.

It's simple, it's fun, and it's a great excuse for a party. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month. New members and couples are welcome to visit twice before committing to a $3.00 lifetime fee. We have an optional $5.00 kitty. Please contact Mary Scott, [email protected].

If you have never line danced, then think about coming on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. to learn basic steps. This time is available to get you started so the instruction and dances are geared for beginners. The other option is Thursday at 1:00 p.m. This time works for people that have some knowledge of line dancing. You can start on the Sunday lessons then spread your wings on the Thursday 1:00 p.m. class when you are ready. We just want to have a good time. Contact: Bonnie Jacobs

The tiles are divided into five groups: Winds, Dragons, Suits (Bam, Crak & Dot), Flowers and Jokers. Interested in learning how to play? Please contact Carol Overdahl ([email protected]), who organizes teaching groups. Or, come by during regular play times and observe us, see if Mah Jongg is something that interests you. We play in the Lago Room on Mondays from 10:30 - 12:30, Tuesdays 6:30 - 8:45 and Thursdays 1:30 - 3:30. Any questions? Contact Melodye Leis ([email protected]).
