The South Ponte Vedra News PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Dear Neighbors, Greetings as we head towards the Labor Day Weekend and the “traditional” end of the summer season. Interestingly, up here in Maine there is a substantial amount of continuing tourist traffic in the fall months as bus tours show up to view New England and its leaves changing colors. Mainers, however, don’t spend a lot of time thinking about leaf colors – preferring to focus on the end of lobster season and thinking ahead to what winter will bring. I was hoping to be able to report by now on the completion of the Drain Field Replacement project. Unfortunately that has not happened and we continue to wait while the DEP “processes” our easement request. The possibility of having to install a larger and more expensive drain field remains “very real” as the capacity of our building allows for a large number of people to be present at once, although that happens infrequently. Special thanks to Dale Roseman and Ken McGill who have completed the installation of new wind/sun panels with our logo at the entrance to the clubhouse. Along with the newly painted blue doors and the portico repairs, SPVCA is looking very sharp. Once we get past the sewer issues we should be well positioned for years to come. Although the book discussion group is on hiatus for the summer months, they are gearing up to begin again in September. I hear that they have already selected books for September and October, which you will find listed elsewhere in this newsletter. Bingo, however, continues to go strong over the summer. August brought some new comers to the game (who I understand won money) along with our first “female caller” in Caroline Fusco. September will feature our second lady in Ruth Ann Clarke. We hear that Judy Pettinicchi, who will be assuming Marge Herklotz’s role after the first of the year, is already hard at work on planning the 2017 calendar of 2 nd Friday dinners. We are very fortunate to have many members who step up and fill important roles as others retire after many years of service. If you are not yet on a committee to prepare food for one of the very popular second Fridays, contact Judy (904-547-2797) so that you too can do your fair share for our continued success. I understand that Shirley Altimore was involved in a dangerous accident and has had to undergo difficult and complex surgery. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers during her recovery. We are keeping an eye on your potential storms from up north. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Neighbors,

Greetings as we head towards the Labor Day Weekend and the “traditional” end of the summer season.

We hear that Judy Pettinicchi, who will be assuming Marge Herklotz’s role after the first of the year, is already hard at work on planning the 2017 calendar of 2nd Friday dinners.

Finally, you might like to note that the County Comissioners will vote on the Watermarke development at their meeting on Tuesday, September 20th, which starts at 9am.

The Summer Before the War By

Helen Simonson

The Summer Before the War is a novel that follows the inhabitants of a small English town through the onset of World War I. Its protagonist, Beatrice Nash, is a young woman who was recently orphaned. In the summer of 1914, she moves to Rye to escape the clutches of the oppressive relatives who administer her inheritance. Over the next few months, as she establishes herself as a Latin teacher, the war slowly drains the town of its vitality. Through Rye’s decline, despite hardships and sadness, Beatrice undergoes a period of positive growth.

On the evening of Beatrice’s arrival in Rye, Agatha Kent and her nephews, Hugh Grange and Daniel Bookham, are at home awaiting their guest. Agatha is eager to meet the teacher she has championed in the face of the hiring

committee’s reluctance to hire a woman…
