Inordertounderstandagricultureandresourceissues, economic theory provides an analytical frameworkthat can be used to assess the interconnected parts oftheagriculturalindustry, predictinglikelyoutcomesofprogrammes, policiesandregulationsanddevisingnecessary solutions. Agricultural Economists thusintegrate the concepts, methods and approaches from economicswithknowledgeofagriculture toevaluateissues, plans and projects in agriculture.

Agricultural Economists utilise their expertise in management, extensionwork, finance, marketingandpolicymakingandadvocacy.

Aims and Objectives

• A detailed understanding and application ofeconomictheory.

• Ability to apply analytical tools to data andinformationinordertomakeappropriateeconomicand business conclusions

• Developanunderstandingofagriculturalbusinessissues in a broader socio-economic and resourcecontext

• Ability to communicate effectively, both writtenand orally, economic concepts, business decision-makingandagriculturalconcepts.

• Abilitytomakeethicalbusinessdecisions.

Industry/Global Trends

Agricultural Economists are challenged by changingagricultural systems as a result of globalisation, privatisationandcommercialisation.Forthesereasons, resource management has become a major issue because thesurvivalof society isdependentonhowwell today’s resources aremanaged to sustain futuregenerations. In addressing this issue, AgriculturalEconomists have come out withmany concepts andmodels. Some of these include: alternative polices/programmes; joint-ventures between small farmers, traders, transporters, processors and exporters; ruralfinancing;adaptingtochangingdomesticmarketsandformingregionalmarkets.

Post-harvesttechnologydealswiththescienceappliedto agricultural produce after harvest for thepurposeofpreservation, conservation, processing, packaging, storage, distributionandmarketingtomeetthefoodand nutritional requirements of consumers.

Post-harvest technology ensures the quality ofperishables while improving the sustainability ofthe fresh chain. This is achieved through the useof optimum harvest factors, reduction of losses inhandling, packaging, transportation and controlledatmosphere (CA) storage with modern infrastructureandprocessing intoawidevarietyofproducts.Post-harvest technology is fundamental to achieving foodsufficiencybyavoidinglossesandprovisionofqualityfood and nutrition as well asmore rawmaterials forprocessing, thus ensuring better returns to farmers.

Experts who work in post-harvest technology applyaninterdisciplinaryapproachwhichincludesscientificcreativity, technological innovation and commercialentrepreneurship.

Within the last two decades, medical practice haschanged significantly andmay continue to evolve inresponsetotechnology, costandrolesandexpertise. In the past, without access to modern diagnostictools, doctorshadtobetrainedtorelymainlyontheirclinicalskillstodiagnosediseasesbutwithadvancesinmedicaltechnology, manydoctorsnowdependmoreonnewgadgetsfordiagnosis.

There is also a shift from general practice to specialisation.Forinstance,inInternalMedicinealone, thereisaglobalshiftfromtraininggeneralphysicianswho handle a wide variety of diseases to physicianswho specialise only on certain parts of the humananatomy such as cardiologists, gastroenterologists, renal physicians, dermatologists, neurologists, andendocrinologists.

Another trend is the rising cost of drugs whichforms a substantial part of medical treatment. Forthis reason, patients with limited financial means orwithout insurancewillfinditdifficulttoaccessqualityhealthcare.

The roles of doctors are also expanding. Aside their primary roles as healers, doctors are taking onadditional responsibilities as administrators, business executives,book-keepersandstore-keepers.
