Defining my target audience and documentary’s appeal

Category: Age and Gender combined

My target audience are both male and female aged 16 – 24. The way in which I aim to successfully appeal to my target audience in my documentary is to include relevant people who fit within the age band as they will be able to create a style that intrigues the target audience. The most achievable ways of doing this is through accurately chosen presenters, the choice of popular music and the involvement of people through interviews and vox pops as they will have views and opinions similar to those of the target audience.

Category: LocationThe location of my preferred target audience is the UK. The way which I aim to successfully appeal to my target audience living in the UK is to film on popular locations in London which will be recognised when immediately seen on camera. Involving those who have views and opinions on the topic of gang culture and crime and how it has affected UK’s society will further increase audience appeal.

Category: Hobbies and Interests combined

I found that my target audience’s interests and hobbies consist of music, sports, socialising and shopping. The way in which I aim to successfully appeal to my target audience with these particular hobbies and interests is to include and adapt a more informal style and tone through the choice of music, light hearted presenters and to possibly conduct interviews and or vox pops on a location to create a sociable atmosphere. Furthermore, for those with an interest in music may be intrigued to learn about this type of genre, its influences and development in the UK. This will obviously be more appeal in to those who have an interest in grime but not to a great extent.

Category: Socio-Economic Groups and Education combinedI have discovered that my target audience will fit in between E to C2 in the socio economic group. Therefore, I am assuming that my target audience have to some degree a level of education meaning that I will have to include a quite a lot of facts and figures to keep them interested Furthermore, the way in which I would appeal to my audience would be at a high level of communicate thereby ensuring that I don’t patronise my audience. However, I feel that I should include a mixture between informality and formality to maintain a certain level of appeal.

Category: Political ViewsThe focus is on grimes influence on the increase level of crime, therefore, the way in which I aim to appeal to my target audience is to incorporate relevant balanced facts and figures to ensure that I don’t offend any individual’s views.

Category: EthnicityThe topic of grime may appeal to more of the black population in the UK therefore a way in which I can appeal to my target audience of all ethnicities would be to include relevant people through having two presenters of different race, through chosen interviewees and vox pops where I involve those who aren’t stereotyped by the grime scene i.e. all black are MCs and or DJs.

Category: ReligionThe way in which I aim to successfully appeal to my target audience is by ensuring that what is included in my documentary doesn’t come across offensive towards anyone’s race or beliefs. More people will immediately develop that sense of respect due to how I present and portray my focus.

Category: Current Media ConsumptionThe way in which I aim to successfully appeal to my target audience is to adapt a style, a combination of various frequently watched and read types of media. It is clear that the vast majority of my target audience have to some extent an interest in watching music videos which is due to the pace at which they are edited. Furthermore, a balance must be achieved through the use of facts and figures in order to appeal to higher end of the range of the target audience who would have an interest in current events.
