Unable to be signed due to CBA restrictions, the Canucks welcome him back into the organization with a 7th round selection. The big centre’s game is as explosive as fellow Latvian Ronalds Kenins’ and is willing to work hard and do

Defenceman Brisebois, a draft pick acquired in a trade that sent Eddie Lack to the Carolina Hurricanes, served as the captain of the QMJHL’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan where he scored 26 points in 52 games played before being traded to the Charlottetown Islanders this past offseason. Having begun his career as a forward, Brisebois’ offensive skills remain. He possesses a fearsome slapshot from the point, though his defensive qualities should not be overlooked. 6’2” and 175 lbs at 18 years of age, Brisebois still has room to grow and should ultimately become an imposing and intelligent two-way defenceman.

An offensively-minded defenceman, Candella scored 20 points in 37 games last year playing for the Hamilton Bulldogs in a season that was cut short by injury. This injury ended up affecting his draft placement, as he was ranked much higher but ended up slipping to the Canucks in the fifth round, suggesting he could possess considerably more upside than his draft position implies. One of the Bulldogs’ most relied-upon defensemen for a variety of situations, Candella’s two-way instincts are strong and contribute to a very complete game. His strengths in the areas of both skating and passing transition the puck up the ice well.

Demko also possessed a stellar 1.88 goals against average and 0.935 save percentage in the 2015-16 season. After dominating at the NCAA level, Demko recently signed an entry-level contract with the Canucks. He is an efficient puck handler and is sure to be a future NHL starter.

Eventually leading his team to the Championship final, he was defeated by a team anchored by fellow Canucks prospect Brock Boeser, but not before drawing the attention of the Canucks organization. A BC native, Garteig signed an entry-level contract and looks to make an impact soon.

Juolevi, the Canucks’ 5th overall pick and first defenceman selected in the first round since 2005, looks poised for NHL stardom in the near future. The top-rated defenceman in the draft, Juolevi adds to the Canucks’ growing presence of youth on the blueline. In his rookie season for the OHL’s London Knights, Juolevi scored 42 points in 57 games, and added another impressive 14 in 18 playoff games. Although best known for his playmaking ability, moving the puck with ease, at 6’3” he is a physical threat as well. All aspects of Juolevi’s game are well-rounded and he can be deployed in a variety of situations. He should be a staple on Vancouver’s back end for years to come.

A member of the team’s top three positions in both points and penalty minutes, expect Laplante to bring his combination of skill and toughness to Young Stars. The winger has also led Team Canada to a gold medal on two occasions, at 2013’s U18 World Junior Championship and Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, leading to his high draft position.

Maksimovich, while standing at 5’9”, uses this to his advantage. Maksimovich’s offensive strengths are easily able to counteract his size, often displaying the speed to maneuver around larger players as well as the hands to facilitate strong passes or find an opening in the net. Often deployed on the powerplay due to his hard slapshot, this purely offensive defenceman should continue to go above the call of duty.

Sautner possesses a good hockey sense. He moves the puck well and has a good two-way game. Sautner has great skating abilities and has been known to be an offensive player. After spending four seasons with the Edmonton Oil Kings and being named Captain there, he joined the Utica Comets for 2015.16. Standing at 6’0’ and weighing in at 195 lbs, he has good NHL size for a defenceman. His size, skill and leadership abilities are sure to be assists to him throughout the tournament.

A British Columbia native and NCAA teammate of Brock Boeser, Stecher was signed as a free agent after scoring 29 points in 43 games at the University of North Dakota. Among the leading scorers of NCAA defencemen, Stecher was part of the team that went on to win the NCAA Frozen Four Championship, being named to the All-Tournament Team. The offensive defenceman is a strong skater and models his game on other successful small, skilled players like Jared Spurgeon and Dan Boyle. He excels at passing and breaking the puck out of the defensive zone.

Now a veteran of the Canucks YoungStars tournament, Valk continues to put up steady and consistent numbers. Last year playing for the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings, he scored 33 points in 30 games played, an impressive pace until his season was ended by injury. While technically not Canucks property, he is signed to an AHL contract and continues to drive forward to an NHL position. A strong offensive player, Valk has impressed at his previous camp appearances with the Canucks and looks to continue to do so this year.

Subban displayed his offensive prowess in the 2015-16 season, having led all Utica Comets defencemen and ranking sixth in team scoring with 36 points (11-25-36) in 67 games. Making his AHL debut last season, Subban also picked up fourteen of those points (3-11-14) on the power play. He was drafted by the Canucks in the fourth round, 115th overall, in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and joined the Comets after four years in the Ontario Hockey League as a member of the Belleville Bulls. The younger brother of the Nashville Predators’ P.K. Subban and Boston Bruins’ Malcolm Subban, Jordan has certainly made a name for himself in his professional debut.

Stukel’s numbers skyrocketed in his Draft year, scoring 56 points in 57 games played with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen, including 34 goals. Over half of these goals were scored on the powerplay, leading the WHL in this category. Stukel is often trusted on the powerplay due to his deadly accurate shot and his passing and playmaking ability. A hometown player who grew up cheering for the Canucks, Stukel thrives when open space is created on the ice and fills their growing need for left wingers.

While previously passed over as a possibility due to his origins in Russia’s MHL league, his performance in international games is impossible to overlook, accumulating points at a point-per-game pace. A powerplay specialist, Zhukenov’s creative offensive capabilities will be a key contribution to the Canucks Young Stars roster.
